  1. The issue is 'control' on American Judge Claims Jurisdiction Over Data Stored In Other Countries · · Score: 1

A subsidiary company has a separate board of directors. It is the task of those directors to run the company in the interests of the shareholder, in accordance with local law. In this case, given that the company is subject to European Data Protection legislation, it would be for the local directors to refuse to obey the court order - and invite MS USA to sack them at an AGM. By the time the AGM comes along, there's a good chance that either the Irish courts will have got involved, or the US government will realise that the enforcement of this will ensure that NOONE uses American companies for any purpose, and that the non-American alternative to Google and MS will gain market share....

  2. That's the excuse that is being trotted out by our lords and masters. In that context, these moves make sense in their eyes. The debate is whether (a) whether the threat is real (b) it's enough to justify the intrusions by the state and (c) whether the state actually achieves anything by these intrusions. All these points are disputable, but it's unfair to dismiss them without consideration.

  3. Press strike? on The Design Flaw That Almost Wiped Out an NYC Skyscraper · · Score: 1

So all the newspapers of the USA were closed and no TV stations were broadcasting news? Certainly today it would make a strong story - after all we're resurrecting it after all these years; I'm dubious that the fact that the newspapers of New York were shut would be a such a barrier then.

It's interesting to consider that the contractors were able to keep this secret despite its news value. This may challenge those who are against conspiracy theorists: 'The story you're telling would come out'. The Snowden revelations have shown that many hints WERE accurate - but some strongly underestimated what the NSA was up to. Conspiracy theorist 1, others 0 on this one...

  5. Police want RESULTS on Student Records Kids Who Bully Him, Then Gets Threatened With Wiretapping Charge · · Score: 2

Given that the public wants measurable results for their tax dollars, getting an easy conviction is their optimum strategy. Upsetting the parents of the bullies, who are probably high status bullies themselves, by revealing that their brats are nasty pieces of work, is not going to do the police any favours. The publicity this case has generated will do some good to this particular situation, but in general, we're stuck with this problem...

Actually the number of clothes that most of us have is FAR more than we will need for the rest of our life, so it's dubious that there will be much of a need for it, unlike food production, which will need to be restarted quite soon.

OTOH if it's all we ever get, then it's probably not worth anything. If nothing else, it gives us hope that we can get more control in the future...

It's really really hard to avoid the conclusion that they've got some killer blackmail data that's keeping her dancing this oppressors' line. The alternative is that she really believes these lies. Given that the GOP isn't winning California in the foreseeable future, the only realistic prospect for her removal is a primary challenge, which, of course, is the easiest thing to pre-empt with convenient revelations. Sadly however, given that she was reelected in 2012, we're not getting rid of her soon unless the grim reaper gets her - she is 80.

Most world religions call for 'love of the neighbour as yourself'. However all who have children should hear 'love your neighbour as your child', as in practice parents are not good at being rational about when their children are concerned, with the result that we see children locked up in doors in reaction to 'stranger danger' - and thereby, overall, suffering more damage from lack of exercise and social interaction. This is merely an example of this wider irrationality... we can HOPE for reason to prevail...

So I assume that's resolving those issues? Or is the issue being ignored by the British grid operator? Or is this a technical issue in theory - but in reality for small scale producers not significant, as in practice the power will be used by local consumers, not actually reaching the first level of substation?
