    I have often thought about this very question in regards to quickbooks. The best assumption I can come up with is it is difficult to get anyone interested in writing such a application.

    It is tax software for god sakes, I cannot really seeing that many developers jumping up and saying hey that fucking rocks I want to write some tax software.

    I don't even consider perl to be a first class language it is a nasty hack that got completely out of control.

    Show me how you define a function call that takes parameters? Never mind I know how it is done in perl, just saying with my 25 years of experience.

    typing curly braces, begin, end etc is just unnecessary cruft to type simply to satisfy the compiler.

    Look the DBA's are all going to cry that the sky is falling as they have skin in this game.

    At the end of the day though there are some work loads that NoSQL is just a better tool for the job. There are others for instance when you need something acid compliant and relational like a traditional db.

    Anyone that claims you should always use just one or the other is a complete idiot.

    So you are telling us that it makes no difference to hiring decisions? No you are a idiot, it is "the decision". Most business expense, usually higher than 60% of income, is in the form of payroll and benefits to say it is not a concern is absurd.

    You are kind of correct, two of our very large .com customers put a halt to all US FTE hires the day after the Supreme Court Ruling. Offshore and or Contractors are still ok.

    Contracting is the way to go if you have a vast skill set to draw from. Buying a house completely limits your job market. I sold mine and have been contracting every since and I am older than you are.

    When it comes time to jump on a new gig I am not geographically limited, I just pack my shit and roll to where the cash is.

    Look this healthcare bill just handed you a golden egg on the platter. Take advantage of it by opening your own outsourcing shop. Project manage the jobs and ensure the clients get a top quality product by vetting all code that goes through the door.

    Either become the person outsourcing or be outsourced take your pick.

    Two of my huge contracting clients just imposed a hiring freeze this week on all US Employee new hires, offshore and contractors are fine.

    Linux has no adoption problem 95% of consumers spend nearly 100% of their time running applications served from a linux box.

    Desktops are pretty damn irrelevant any longer for any home consumer. The only thing they care about is that it can launch a browser so they can play on facebook and pinterest.

    No it does not need a GUI for everything it already does. Joe blow sitting at home playing on facebook, pinterest, click ville games, twitter etc etc never has to use a CLI if they even know what it was.

    There is no problem with adoption hundreds of millions of users spend most of their day attached to a linux box through a browser, they don't need to know how it works.

    Sorry to burst your bubble but Linux already dominates the desktop. The general public sits down to a computer and launches a browser (gui to a linux server).

    They spend the better part of 90% of their time logged into some application powered by thousands of linux servers. Google, Gmail, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, ClickVille games etc etc all powered by a linux server.

    The CLI is not there to assist the general public it is there to allow us professionals to manage things efficiently.

    A desktop os is only a vehicle in which to launch a browser.

    I really do not see where any changes are required.

    Look 90% of the consumer markets time on a pc is spent fucking around with facebook, twitter, click ville, pinterest shit like that. Guess what there is your point and click interface for linux. Linux owns the frigging desktop, a consumer os is nothing more than a launch platform for a web browser. Linux flat out powers the internet thus it already owns the desktop.

    Hmm no you don't usually have much control over the recovery either. I was involved in a outage once because some guys trenching cable cut clean through our fiber bundle. There is no controlling anything that happens after that you are just down until the fiber is repaired.

    In a cloud environment, given that you have a DR plan you press a button and you are back online.
