  1. This just in (Politischer Aschermittwoch) on China to Pioneer Melt-Down Proof Reactors · · Score: 1

Seemingly, Stoiber, the erstwhile candidate for German chancellor in the last election, just advocated an "ideology free" view (read: reassessment) of nuclear power. That he was that much pro atomic energy was new to me... But it's clear: there is no wind or oil in Bavaria, so the indigenous sources of energy are not quite plentiful. What he overlooks, is the 50.000 jobs being created in wind energy in the last years (how many people were there working in Siemens KWU, the nuclear branch that merged recently with Framatome?).

  2. Don't forget local job creation! on Wind Power Falls Under $0.01/kwh · · Score: 1

Some posters have pointed out the issue of lack of jobs in North Dakota, dying communities etc. See here for a Spanish example how this can be reversed.

And wind power in Europe has created over 150.000 jobs out of the blue. That's plenty more people than to run a few nuclear plants...

  3. Re:Wind blows *NEARLY* *ALWAYS* on Wind Power Falls Under $0.01/kwh · · Score: 1

It depends on the size of the area in question. The correlation drops with distance, but even combining the wind power from all of Europe, the minimum production is only 1% of the installed capacity. And in the US, you would have to transport eg enough power for California through the faltering transmission lines from North Dakota or Iowa.
See the works of Michael Milligan, Brian Parsons, Bernhard Ernst, Gregor Giebel and Hannele Holttinen for details.

On the plus side, most every result shows that integrating wind power up to 20% is very possible (Western Denmark survives with 27%, Navarra with 50%, and Schleswig-Holstein with even more).

...though close. One of our technicians had a job to do on the top level of a 125m met tower. Comes one bad move, and the ruggedized Nokia he had is unseated, falls, dangles two times at the mast, and disappears somewhere in the high grass. Well, not much to do there, is it?
He and a colleague spend some time searching it, until the colleague asks: Did you have your mobile turned on?, rings to it, diddeli-diddeli-diddeli, go after the tone, pick it up, and all he had to do was to wipe it off!

I leave the calculation of the impact force as an exercise to the (karma-starved) reader.

  6. What's the status of TV on a PDA? on Return of the TV Wristwatch · · Score: 1

Is anyone working on, say, a SD card with a TV tuner (be it analog or DVB) for a PDA? It probably still would suck the battery dry in no time, but it would be fun while it lasts...

Alternatively, have a purpose built solution, maybe employing something like the Archos Video Jukebox or the Media Center of MS. What's the status there?

Is there any advantage to be had by going for DVB? Batterywise, eg? Which size antenna do you need anyway?

Just fodder for thought (and replies).

Please, someone with an aeronautics and space background respond. Would it be worthwile, and possible at all, to use the Concorde as a first stage for the Orbital Sciences Pegasus rocket (or some similar toy)?

My first guess is that something must prevent it, otherwise they would have gotten an old Tu-144 (nicknamed "Concordski") or even a mothballed SR-71. But what?

As an aside, yes, it was truly loud. I worked near Oxford for a while, and the only plane you could hear starting from Heathrow was Concorde. Once at around 1100 so you could start salivating for lunch, and once later in the evening, telling you that it's about time to get home...

And now, to the "interesting factoids of Concorde" section (shamelessly looted from BA's Tribute to Concorde site):
    - The Concorde has logged more supersonic hours than all military aircraft together.
    - The most flying passenger is an oil executive, logging up to 70 (seven-oh) trips in one year (trips as in, return trips).
    - Here should be a third factoid for symmetry, but I cannot remember it...

FP? Anyway, I've visited that type of plant (OTEC, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) already in Hawaii (near Kona), where there is one running since quite some years. One problem is that it only works for steep ocean wall drop offs, since otherwise the pipe is getting too long.

It uses about half of the created energy (through a normal Carnot cycle) for pumping (about 120kW). The other half is not quite competetive, but with the nutrient rich and cool water, fish farming and air conditioning can be done, heaving the whole investment to a black zero (or better).
