Err... um... there's a drop in QuickTime component that gives ogg support to iTunes. Here is the home page of the Quick Time Components project, and here is a direct link to the Ogg Vorbis decoder plugin. I don't know about an encoder plugin, but I've used the decoder plugin for quite a while now. Also, contrary to some posts I've read at macosxhints.com, you DO NOT have to rename files from.ogg to.mov.
Come on... haven't you memorized the exact keys to punch to get a certain amount of cash from your bank's ATM? Sure, that wouldn't work at an unfamiliar ATM, but one you use often you should know by heart now. In fact, I often choose Spanish language instructions just for the hell of it:)
M$ is not evil simply because they are closed source.
They are not evil because their software only runs on x86 architecture.
They are evil for their blatant anti-competitive practices.
They are evil for using their monopolistic influence to block any other software company from succeeding in a market in which M$ chooses to enter.
Frankly, I don't really care that much about open source for the Free-ness (I rarely care to hack around in someone else's applications, although I'm sure a lot of people do), but the free-ness ($0) is nice.
And no, you are not mistaken... Aqua is closed source, but the underlying OS, Darwin, is open source and multi-architecture (PowerPC and x86).
Yes, I first used unix talk in 1989, and it was real time communication, which I suppose can be called a type of instant messaging. You even got to watch the other person backspacing over their tyop^H^Hpos:)
Wow... AZ sucks. I was making just slightly more than you per week (in NC) and I get the maximum allowable benefits of $416/wk. Of course, just as I get all that paperwork done, I get offered a 3 month contract. Good news: $40/hr. Bad news, after 3 months, it may be over, and I'll have little to no unemployment benefits, since self-employment taxes don't cover unemployment insurance...:(
Looks like I'll be packing away the paychecks in case I'm back in line come January!
Slight inconvenience? When you get 5 random phone calls a night, invariably at dinner time, that's more than an inconvenience. These people are one rung above spammers. They serve no useful purpose in a productive society. They are all out there peddling crap that people don't really want. Their sales are almost entirely due to fleecing the people out there who don't have the balls to be rude to these bastards, then end up listing to some script an ethically bankrupt scheister wrote to sell worthless junk. If I want a product, I know damn well how to get in my car and drive to a store, or look up a web site and click a few buttons.
I can put up a sign in my front door saying no solicitors and have violators arrested and prosecuted for trespassing. A do-not-call registry is the telephonic equivalent to a no solicitors sign. If I want to listen to some sales pitch in my own home, I know how to call a company and invite a salesperson over for tea.
Telemarketers are scum and I don't give a damn how many of them lose their jobs. I haven't had a job in two months, but I'd rather chop off my hands than take a job harassing people in the privacy of their own homes.
SoBig... hell, I've gotten practically none of the worms/viruses/etc since the ILOVEYOU catastrophe about 2 years ago. This one, I've gotten nearly 20 of em... Not sure where the source email is coming from, as the headers all show messages coming from someone I don't know (mostly european addresses....nl and.it the most common). Doesn't sound like the normal 'read the outlook [express] address book and send yourself to everyone listed' kind of worm.
Yep, that's why I got the Ph.D. in physics, then went into the wonderful world of IT. I'm making the same money now that I was in grad school... nothing. I want a job...:-(

Do you really believe that people copying and pasting papers together, like Dr. Frankenstein did in creating his monster, actually understand the concepts of 'writing style' and 'word choice'???
At least the pic at M$ isn't so blatant... They just cropped the pic down. You can still see a little red, but not the whole cap (and it's a cap, not a RedHat hat). I just don't get the stripe in the SCO picture... He's wearing a plain blue shirt. Nothing on it!
Sorry, I don't associate with greedy lawyer types... not that I'm worried about this case, but send me a few names/numbers in case I have a future need arise!:)
Yup... there you go. Net income != revenue. To put it in generic terms, revenue = gross income, profit = net income (good enough for non-accountants anyway). Looks like the people at the Register haven't learned that yet...
Hey, I'm not defending the bloodsucking bastards... I'm just pointing out that paying for DirecTV service would not necessarily shield you from their attacks. Even if you pay for every premium service they offer, they could still claim you're stealing PPV content. At that point, you could give them $3500, or give a lawyer a lot more to defend you in the lawsuit.
If you win, you could possibly countersue to recoup losses, but that costs more $$$ and there is no guarantee you will win the countersuit.
I own a smartcard reader/programmer (most devices are both readers and programmers, it's just a serial interface to a "chip card" aka smartcard.) made by Schlumberger, and the SmartCard Developer's Kit from Amazon, which I bought to play with Smartcard support for Linux.
Read the article. They are raiding operations of websites selling pirating hardware. As part of the raid, they are confiscating customer databases. Not to difficult to find a programmer who can extract all customer purchases within 5 minutes at that point.
Now I just have to hope DirecTV doesn't come after me since I'm a paying customer... You can't pirate a signal you're paying for, right?
But, according to the article, you can use the cards to get premium and pay-per-view signals for free. If you do that, it doesn't matter if you're a subscriber or not: You're stealing the signal. Stealing's wrong, hmmm-kay? --
Not all of us have enough cash to hand a lawyer for a retainer. *I* can't just call up a lawyer and tell him to stick it to DirecTV. Not that I bought one of these smart card dealies... I recently moved and strongly considered DirecTV as a replacement for Time Warner Cable. Glad I didn't now.
A quick and dirty explanation is that linux is a kernel. Debian, Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake (and a few dozen more names I'll omit) are operating systems built on top of the linux kernel. These are linux distributions, so your first statement is correct.
Nothing like addressing a deadly disease by imprisoning anyone who gets worried about it and sends a message to a remote family member to have them send "a cure." I guess I should say it once again... Information wants to be free!
When they fire you, you will get some money because they fired you, won't you ? (I don't know how it is in the US, I am in Europe, and here, If my company fires me, I get an amount of money for compensation).
Not in the US. If you are fired for performance reasons, you typically get nothing, and it's perfectly legal. In fact, it even makes some sense... you signed a contract (either fixed term, or at will for a permanent position) agreeing to work in exchange for money and benefits. If you break your end of the bargain, why should you get anything?
On the other hand, if you are laid off (company can't afford payroll, so they let people go for any number of reasons), you will typically get some sort of severance package, often based on the number of years you have worked for the company.
The article I linked to said 1200 non-citizens (doesn't mean they're here illegally, though) were detained. Immigration charges were used as a pretext to detain 766 of them. Of those, only a few had terrorism-related charges levelled against them. What about the other 434?

I didn't read the patent, if that's what you mean... the linked article at rss.com.com.com.com.com... doesn't contain the word 'talk' at all.

Damn, I hate this fucking system.
Your fallacious assumption is that ALL revenue for Hughes Electronics comes from DirecTV's subscriber base.
Now, I agree something looks wrong here... either s/million/billion/ or s/revenue/profit/

No, it's copyright violation... there's a difference. It's still not right, but it's not theft.

Woo hoo! That would make you the "peer (to peer) baron"!
