    If it turns out to be true, it will be evidence that someone was aware of the possibility as early as [date stamp of original message].

    This is an unverified, and probably false report, but this being Slashdot, it has to be said.

    On the radio just now, some dude in New York was being interviewed and said he saw a truck with a thing sticking out of it like a missle.

    This raises the possibility that the plane was shot at from the ground.

    Obviously major news organizations will not report this, even if it turns out to be true. Did anyone else hear this report?

    Slashdot should absoloutely be reporting news. This falls under the category of "Stuff That Matters".

    When shit happens, I want to know about it. The incompetent boobs running CNN's website don't know how to handle something like this. Thank CmdrTaco for a website like this, that not only can get the news directly to my brain, but also allow for all of us to be reporters and share what we find out, when we get more info.

    Microsoft says it's "irresponsible" to expect them to get a patch out for a critical flaw within "a few days".


    Pardon my french, but *bullshit*.


    Apple released iTunes 2.0 on a Saturday night. When a major bug was found, not only did they pull the installer *immediately*, but they fixed the bug and had a new one up in its place (properly labelled 2.0.1) within 24 hours. Not only that, but they have also said that they will pay for DriveSavers recovery for anyone who lost data to the bug. Can anyone imagine MS responding that quickly? On a *weekend* even! (Or accepting responsibility for its bugs like that?)

    Many years ago, I read a book, the title of which I have forgotten. Basically, the terrorists in the novel use large gatherings (including a MacWorld Expo) to spread a bioagent, that has a delayed reaction of serveral days (weeks?). Everyone flys home, and later, massive outbreaks all over the USA that nobody knows where it started. (Anyone remember the title? I would be eternally grateful)

    I have to agree, even if the poster is a bad speller. If we can execute human beings (something Dubya loves to do anyway) why not execute corporations? After Microsoft, the next candidates IMHO would be tobacco companies. After, their products have caused the death of millions, so they could be classified as mass murderers. Hell, they've killed 500 times as many people as Osama bin Laden. We should just bomb the fuck out of them. (Anyone got numbers on how many people Microsoft has killed?)

    Speaking of Funny Posts, I'd like to be able to filter out everything but.
    Sometimes, I just want to read the posts modded "funny"... Slashdot can be the best source of humor anywhere.
    I wish I could filter out all that "Interesting" and "Informative" crap, and make it my own personal humor site.
    Something to brighten my day between issues of TheOnion.

    There is a serious problem with that line of thinking. In 100 years, when we discover that it wasn't such a good idea, vast amounts of human knowledge will be lost forever.

    With published works, you kill some trees, slice them up, spread some ink on them, and ship copies to libraries all over the world. North America gets wiped out by a comet? Thats ok, University of Nowhereville, Europe, still has a copy of your paper. When everything is electronic, its probably only stored in one or two places (plus a few people's browser cache).

    There was a whole lot of data stored in WTC Tower 1, that was backed up to WTC Tower 2. Uh oh. Was your life work destroyed?

    If I were a very suspicious conspiracy theorist, the first question I would ask after an attack like this, where nobody has claimed responsibility, is "Who Benefits?"


    If I were suspicious of the US Government, I would notice that Bush's rating has jumped from mid 40s on September 10th, to over 90% now. I would take note of the fact that there the USA is again returning to deficit spending, without a peep from the Democrats, and that american defense contractors are thrilled with the contracts and cash coming their way, to build the arsenal that will fight "America's New War".


    ...If I were suspicious of the American Government. But of course, I'm not. I fully support them. How could the US Government have anything but the best interests of the world at heart?

    Speaking of Tom Clancy... (yes, I know I'm straying off-topic, but please wait until someone replies before you mod me down) I recall a book that I read many years ago, in which terrorists released some biological agent at various sites around the USA, including a MacWorld Expo. The effect wasn't felt for some time... after people had travelled on planes back home from the conference (and the other places where the stuff was unleashed). The effect was that the disease broke out all over the USA simultaneously, and the source could not initially be determined. I can't for the life of me remember the title, and its been bugging me for weeks. Anyone know what it was?

    OK, you're right, maybe they won't go that far. But how about something that at least protects our rights from monopolistic media controlling corporation?
    Alternatively, could the same thing be accomplished with a Supremem Court Decision?

    The first amendment prevents the federal government from restricting speech. The 14th extended that restriction to the individual states. Time to extend again, to cover corporations.
    Something along the lines of: "No corporation may violate any rights which the government is not allowed to violate."
    (Me is not versed in Lawyerly ways, so there should probably be more to it than that)

    There are 16 digits in your average Mastercard. (More in Amex, less in Visa). With 16 digits, there are 1,000,000,000,000,000 possible different numbers (give or take an order of magnitude).
    There are 100,000,000 people in the USA (again, give or take an order of magnitude).
    What are the odds that a randomly generated number is a real one?
