They will still be able to tell the IP you connect to, which will tell them the server you queried. That information could be useful to someone.
But they won't be able to see the content of the query.
Of course, this sounds like the legislation, as written, could be interpreted to mean that only layer 7 logging needs to happen (since that is where HTTP lives) in which case, even your destination IPs would be safe from logging under this law.
I then set up an SSH server with all authentication methods disallowed except certificate authentication.
The host is in a DMZ with ssh open to internal hosts, it also allows ssh agent forwarding and tunneling. This makes for a great "poor man's" vpn server when the actual VPN is down or has a problem.
Proposed Class 23: Abandoned Software – Video Games Requiring Server Communication
Many modern video games—which may be played on a personal computer or a dedicated gaming console—require a network connection to a remote server operated by the game’s developer to enable core functionalities. Before some games can be played at all, including in single-player mode, the game must connect to an “authentication server” to verify that the game is a legitimate copy. Other games require a connection to a “matchmaking server” to enable users to play the game with other people over the internet in multiplayer mode. In the case of a game that relies on an authentication server, the game may be rendered entirely unplayable if the server connection is lost. When a matchmaking server is taken offline, the game may still be playable, though with online multiplayer play disabled.

The Copyright Office set forth the following proposed exemption in the NPRM: Proposed Class 23:
This proposed class would allow circumvention of TPMs on lawfully acquired video games consisting of communication with a developer-operated server for the purpose of either authentication or to enable multiplayer matchmaking, where developer support for those server communications has ended. This exception would not apply to video games whose audiovisual content is primarily stored on the developer’s server, such as massive multiplayer online role-playing games.
What if a game manufacturer keeps authentication servers up (because the authentication system is part of a larger auth system) but the actual game servers are down?
Yeah, I think that what most people lack is patience.
I love having a ton of selection when it comes to consumables like food. I will select something different every time I go to the grocery or liquor store.
When buying stuff like computers though, it can be a hassle because I have to actually put thought and research time into it.:)
What?!
In my opinion Star Trek is ranked:
1. Voyager
2. STTNG
3. DS9
4. Enterprise
5. TOS
That isn't to say that TOS is the worst sci-fi, it is just the worst Star Trek TV series.
I guess this is why Bruce Schneier is a guru and gets the big bucks....
Updates are forbidden? Call it an Upgrade.
No new taxes? No problem, call it a fee....
See how easy this is?

Or just use a VPN service or TOR
Lots of trivial ways around this... no need to panic.
Your LightSpeed Briefs (TM)
Except that I am sure that MS is not on the hook for this at all.
That's WHY they use contractors.
Same thing with cell tower owners like Verizon... they own the them but they contract out all the work on them and are not liable for any accidents...
I was thinking the same thing....
I remove access to SSH from all hosts.
I then set up an SSH server with all authentication methods disallowed except certificate authentication.

This has proven to be a pretty secure system.
Is this something like a pusher robot?
well... perhaps this would open the market to more manufacturers then.
Perhaps the current distribution model is what actually makes it hard for new manufacturers to "break in" to the market.
Nevermind, here is an excerpt:

Yeah and what constitutes "dead"?

The inherent value from some mineral from the ground is exactly zero too.
It is all about scarcity and the value we place on things.
You still have made a choice.
Indeed.
I have not been following the split, but it seems like they are breaking off the less profitable "consumer" divisions into their own company.
If that is the case it may not necessarily mark a decline, just a "reorganization".
Interesting.... I think of ProLiant servers or ProCurve network gear when someone says HP.
I totally forgot that they make printers.
It may be in decline but it is still one of the top computer and network equipment manufacturers in the world.
I have also never worked at a large corporation that didn't have some involvement with HP whether it be servers or huge software platforms.
I don't think HP is in any real trouble.
I don't know that low expectations are the key.
This philosophy definitely works for movies but not for life in general.
I think the way to go is not to assume things are going to go a particular way and just go with the flow....
You must bend like a reed in the wind...
Sounds like you weren't using the right shampoo...
You chose.....unwisely.

At my place of employment we use what we call an executive summary.
This summary lays out 3 options maximum even if there are many more.
If the customer wants to then discuss and make changes, we are happy to go into the weeds at that point.
We have learned that decision makers are generally not very good at decision making and less options lead to a sale more often.
Thanks for the great reply!
Thanks for the reply.
As you imply, it is a trendy word lately. I guess it just makes me feel old and not hip more than anything else.
damn kids and their damn hoola hoops and fax machines...
Well that doesn't make for a very fun "evil corporation" story, now does it?
