My parents just dropped off some old stuff from their attic, including my legos. I had a big box of the generic ones, and a couple of the space sets.
It was great back in those days - the biggest problem was usually that you were one block short of the color you wanted, but could do almost anything.
I had a motorized tank with a remote control I think...hardest part was designing something to fit over it where the wire didn't get in the way.
I even used that and some other legos in my high school physics project.
Now my daughter plays with them...much better than what I see in the stores today - everything is this or that set...unless you wanna contact the company, it's hard to just find lots of blocks.
uh...whatever the first screener of Phantom Menace that came avail:).rm, and it was on a PII-400 - high end machine at the time, with just the os running, and Task Manager showing performance was fine.
If Iomega made Jaz drives that didn't die, I could probably fine it.
Real is the only thing I've ever seen that crapped out playing a video file on my hard drive, claiming it was network congestion.
Ever since that, I've always regarded it as a joke. It has gotten better over the years, and the enterprise edition works a lot better than the standard and gets rid of a lot of the normal complaints about it being intrusive.
But still, there is that lasting impression of network congestion playing a file off my hard drive.
Actually, both boys. We have two female cats (technically its now anyway) and two males can coexist, but not two females. Learned that after, actually read it to.
Anyway, one is part siamese, which are noisy, and thinks everytime she meows she should be fed, and she likes to meow.
The other is a tabby, who is normally good, but in the evening likes to walk around the house making this horrid noise, or just darts around like mad making noises that make her get called a gremlin.

I understand what you are saying - if they suck that bad already, why would they care to do anything but transfer their guilt to you in the form of a lawsuit, but on what ground? I wonder how long it is until a lot of the laws hitting banks, higher ed, and healthcare start to hit business...laws where they get in big trouble if financial, student or medical info gets out. just add customer to that mix.
I agree that I've never gotten such a quote from Dell, but I have gotten quotes from other vendors in this way...go in adjust the quantity and it automatically computes the total, etc...
Make for an interesting court case. Vendor showing the copy their e-mail log kept, customer claiming that one was falsified, etc...
Really... it costs more for a mainframe than a wintel server. Duh... how about taking the same box with Win and Linux on it and see which handles more of a load?
My wife wants to get our 4 year old a CD player for her birthday, but is fearful of all the cd's getting trashed ("Elmo's Favorite Songs" - yeah...I can think of worse things that could happen:)
Anyway, I told her I can just burn copies of the cd's so if anything happens to the copies, just make another one. Easy solution. This is a pain with DVD's...can't just put it in andmake a one-to-one copy. It's a pain to rip, convert, etc... Even if it wasn't the dual-layer issue, I can't just copy back and forth.
Went back home and ordered on-line with free shipping
As much as I like the "take-it-with-me-now" factor, I have been tending to order things online now.
You don't have to deal with their whining about how great the extended warranty is, or how there is now way I could possibly install a car stereo as well as their qualified people could, etc...
In the USA you drive on the right hand side. Drivers going slow are to remain to the right lanes, leaving the left for passing. Yet on multilane freeways I frequently observe cars crawling along, well under the speed limit,
There is one on/off ramp I have to go by on the way to work that people stay in the left hand lane until the last moment, and then cut their SUV's across 3 lanes of traffic to get off, and then when they get on there, they immediatly cut to the left hand lane. I guess they are allowed to do that because their vehicles cost more and the roads must be just for them.
why would a store accept returns on one of its busiest days of the years
I take it you've not gone out on the 26th.
Any store worth it's salt has quite the elaborate setup for returns. I know in most cases when I've returned something, I end up getting something else at the same store (most stores only give store credit) and end up spending more money.
Though I had to go to Wal-Mart for legit items (saving my returns for tomorrow AM) and got in and out - not really busy...I was surprised.
I don't mind the parking or the crowded stores...I just don't like the grumpy people.
Others have said this, so make this one more suggestion to avoid ATI like the plague. Yes, you can play 3d games on them, but the video i/o support sucks to put it politely. There is no official support from ATI for TV I/O, all they care about is people can say that ATI plays Quake fast.
There is the GATOS project to deal with the video in/out issues. If you are lucky you may get something out of GATOS to work, however while I have respect for the people working on it, a major uphill battle, stuff rarely works, finding any sort of documentation or useful info is nigh impossible, and it is generally flaky all-around. Not something that you'd want to risk Dexter and Jak's life (or whatever is on the PS2) on:)

C'mon...we all know we wanted to see Sam grab the ring and use it's power to have the best garden in all of the Shire.
As you said though - the book did over emphasis some of the aspects. I was hoping for the whole birthday present dialog myself. Then again, with the first cut of the film at 6 hours, there may have originally been a more gradual descent:)
Now...why they coulnd't get a giant eagle to carry Frodo to Mordor...hmmm...with the ring locked up in a box that says "do not open...throw in lava"

I liked the movies, but I found it annoying that most of the battle scenes looked as if they were shot about 2 feet away from the action.
I would have rather scene some wider shots of the battle instead of two or people right in your face fighting it out. It all flashes by too fast then. It does help to relay the idea that war is chaos...makes you wonder how much "friendly fire" there is, but on screen it is just a blur.
Gandalf, Sauruman and the other Istari were forbidden to directly interfer. (A wizard prime directive?) They idea is that men should take charge of their own lives and the powerful Maia/Istari/Angels/etc... should help guide them but not fight their battles for them. This is the reason that Gandalf couldn't just say "hey Biblo, give me the ring and I'll drop it in Mt. Doom the next time Sauron and I have a poker night."

IIRC, New York passed a law similar to this about 10 years ago. Same reasons - as long as it wasn't being done in a lewd manner.
