Yes...we have a big fat pipe...well bigger than a home users at least.

And P2P was eating it all up. Now anything that gets classified as P2P (Kazaa, Morpheus, etc) for the whole campus (faculty, staff and students) gets a combined bandwidth of 28.8k. Instant Messenger programs are limited to 100k (after all, it *should* just be text - though some video I guess could be there, but not rampant file swapping).

Since BitTorrent has a little more real use (Linux ISO's, slashdoted sites) it gets a little more freedom.

Why? Not because we feel bad for the RIAA or anything like that - but legit work could not be done due to a clogged pipe. Students and staff seem to think our connection is there for them to suck down stuff like crazy.

We tried being nice, we tried saying please, but nope.

I have played with other OS's running under VM. IBM knows what they are doing in that field.

Combine the two, and I think you have something that should work well. However, I'd weigh the costs. I would think it would a good thing to do if you already have a z-box laying around that has some space cycles. However, I would think that a stack of Dell's or something would be cheaper than buying the IBM equipment.

That way you look like you can get things done in a hurry. Looks good come evaluation time.

  7. Re:Huh? on Big Company on Campus · · Score: 1

There is no MS only product policy. Lots of people run Linux. Profs in the IT department run Linux servers. Almost half the campus servers are Linux. There is even a local debian mirror.

However support resources are finite. Usually people running Linux can support themselves. As long as people can get on the network, they should be able to do whatever. And there are quite a few people working at the help desk running Linux as well.

As for the selections of software and other programs, part of it may be the aluded to buddy-system like book dealers and profs. Part of it (the buggy uniprint, which has a stupid design flaw making it trivial to bypass) are because there are not a large number of products to choose from for some of these solutions.

I am not saying it's perfect, but it is hardly the MS stormtrooper filled place you paint it as.

  20. If it's like gas deregulation...then no on Deregulation and Niagara Mohawk - Is There a Story? · · Score: 1

A few years ago they deregulated the gas industry in Georgia. Instead of having one company that ran the gas lines, provided the service and read the meter, you now have lots of companies to choose from.

The idea is that prices will go down because of competition.

Well...I'm not sure about the actual gas prices, but my gas bill used to be $8 in the summer...now it's $22 - the price of gas may not have changed, but now there is a couple of charges that all companies make - meter reading fee and gas-pass thru charge which come to about $15. Why?

Because that one company still maintains everything, provides the gas - however, all these companies get to do is read your meter and bill you.

So, nothing changed at all in the gas infrastructure, just the billing. Otherwise there would need to be a gas line for each company going to each house for true competition.

I'm sure power is the same way...one (aging) infrastructure providing the power and everyone else reading the meter.
