Oddly though - when I first started, I was getting 44kbps+ and then it dwindled off. I would have thought I would be getting better performance...perhaps I am just getting unlucky and getting slow seeders :(

  4. Would it really kill net commerce? on States Push for Net Sales Taxes · · Score: 1

Right now buying something online is a little bit cheaper because I don't pay the sales task. If I buy a $10 book from amazon, I'm saving about $0.70. For bigger items it would add up.

BUT...would the lack of a brick&mortar store (or at least chain of them) be able to offset that cost?

And would this hurt all "e-tailers" equally? I'm thinking about the stuff I've bought online. There were two big purchases (minDV cam and telescope) that I am grateful there were no sales tax. However, I had no local option to buy those from, so I would have either had to mail-order it or buy it online. Other, smaller, cheaper things I've bought online were similar items - stuff that you just can't find in the mass-market stores around here. Books that noone carries, a Scooby wall clock for the kid that you can't find in stores, etc...

So a tax may not be the greatest for stores selling the same crap you can go down the street to get, as the price will be just about the same, and you have to pay shipping and wait for it. But for stuff outside the mass market merchandise, I don't think it'll make too much of a difference.

Also, you gotta wonder how many people will not even include sales tax in a purchase thought and get hit by it as an "oh shit" afterthought.

Which goes to what it said about the supremes saying a state can only impose the tax if the business has a physical presence in the state. Barnes & Noble probably has a store in every state, so it would be liable. Amazon doesn't...so only in a handful of states.

Interesting if you colocate servers...wonder how that works.

My best friend used to live there. Like you said, no room for quite a bit of rent. He had a tiny fridge, just to keep a couple things cold, as he would eat out all the time (that's gotta hurt the wallet). His window looked into a small area full of overgrown brush and then another building 10' away. For such a small place, the bathroom was unusually large. Plus your life is somewhat at the mercy of how your neighboors behave, etc... At least he was on the top floor and had a second locked door besides the entrance before you got to his section of the apartment. And you had little storage space, and a communal storage space in the basement (he said a neighboor found a homemade porno of another couple in the building.)

But, I digress - didn't you read the part of the article where Joel talks about having the programmers wanna live in the apartment :)

That just made me think of Led Zeppelin. Of course they were HUGE. The record company knew it, and they knew it as well. Of course, you could't do like Britney and just replace them with someone else.

That gave Led Zeppelin a lot of leverage to dictate how their contract was going to be done...which gave them a helluva lot more of the sales than most artists. I really can't think of an artist today that would have that kind of pull. Perhaps Dave Matthews - then again I'm a living anacronism, stuck in the 80's.
