The Internet has limited bandwith but will ship small mounts of data almost instantly. The post office has amost unlimited bandwith but insain lag. For example this message is posted from my pda to slashdot in seconds. The same message would take at least three days over the postal network. But if I tried to send the entire contents of my computer over the net it would take a few weeks (for mainnence reasons I erased the mp3s and porn from my system.. already backed up) I could copy everything to cdr and ship it. There is a max load for postal but you'll only see it if your in retail or masproduction and shipping whole batches of refridgeraters or TVs.
The data bandwith of the postal system will continue to increase as long as data storage improves. Internet bandwith has to contend with burrocracy and corprate compacency postsl bandwith dose not.
If SCO's BS works then Apple can play the same game on Microsoft. Don't prove infringment just make wild stupid "but the public won't know better" type clames. After all Apple did give Microsoft the right to use the Mac os look and feel. Or maybe whomever owns BSD today can clame ownership of some key Internet protocalls via todays insain patent system.
Last time I talked to someone about SCO was a Unix admin who was angry at whom ever signed the contract for the system install. The company that sold them the system got to keep root access for themselfs and charged to make changes to the system config.
Face it, if it some source is vital to your company staying competitive, it isn't going to be GPL'd. Only if your selling the software and not giving away (as any and all hardware venders do) When your selling software you want as many people buying your software as possable. Giving it away and worse GPLing the source is counter productive. When you sell HARDWARE you want as many people buying your HARDWARE as possable. Giving away the SOFTWARE that makes it run is a good idea. GPLing the source is even better. Great you have closed source Windows drivers horray for you becouse you can sell to 75% of the market like everyone else. Thats ok but just by GPLing the code they go from 75% to 100%... and byond as hackers and hams find new uses for them. Some hams have reprogrammed some communications hardware to do new things. I'd be neat if a WIFI card can also be a packet modem or a repeater. Maybe even a self contained wifi repeater for those community network projects. Who knows?
Well on the plus side consoles are cheaper than systems with a standard buss and we'd no longer have to worry about the interface buss being the drag. On the negitive side is that the industry dose what Microsoft wants. If Microsoft says "You may not upgrade your hardware" the add on after market dries up and all you have left are chip sets put directly on the mother board no more updating anything.

Linux and Windows both have compressed file systems that can be applied to CD rom. Besides making the data disk readable from only one os I see no sereous draw backs to this software solution. So this hardware solution is not OS dependent but it appears to have issues with reguards to other CD rom drives. If someone wanted to they could put the Linux compression in a Windoes driver or add windows compression to Linux. and Mac Os X support should be easy enough.
