  1. Umm.. troll? on On Warp Pipe, Open Source, Closed Source · · Score: 1

Jeez mods... this is too classic of a troll not to notice.

"I was a part of the project" without any backup evidence or really anything to add.... and its modded up to 5? Not to mention this is a troll imposter of bethanie (notice the spelling is 'bethane').

He must be low on karma and needed a boost. Now someone needs to set this straight.

Honestly, if Red Hat says they have proof that MS was using copyright code from one of its properitary dlls, and IBM gave them a boatload of cash to help out, would it be 'unfair'?

Always reverse the situation before you guys go foaming at the mouth!

QA? Testing? This is what open source needs!

Allow me to use Slashdot as an example. Wednesday nights = push development into production. Anyone on the slashteam want to tell me what regression testing tools and system testers they use? Sure, usually (not always) there isn't a crash-and-burn build, but occasionally there is annoyances and such that are just 'thrown into' the build that people didn't know was coming and other things.

Granted, this is Robs code, let him do what he wants with it, but with a 'QA' step it just makes for a better product.

It comes down to developers either making a cool game, or a buncha horny techies that use sex to sell to adolescent teenage boys (or both). Those 'horny techies' are juvenilizing the gaming world so that women don't want to be a part of it.

Oh, and to tack on my opinion. I think 'gaming for money' as an occupation is rediculous, and I don't see why companies sponser it (no need to argue this point, its my opinion and I've heard most of the arguements).

I never said finding 'good' people, I just merely said that the internet posting boards is a last attempt at finding someone (and there is no guarantee that the internet is a place to find someoen 'good'... in fact, I'd say, on average, referals produce a better employee than a person hired from the net).

  11. Last Resort on Internet Job Boards a Bunch of Hype? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Its usually used as a last resort.

When a job opens up, first they look internally for someone to fill it, then they go off a referal basis (and at this time, who doesn't have a few friends that are unemployed IT workers?), then they look locally in papers and such...

THEN they go out to a place like dice to find a job.

The market isn't "good enough" for them to work well. The market is a lot better than last year, but needs to build back up to happier times before places like monster will get you a job fast.

Best learner's C++ book has to be "Thinking in C++" by Bruce Eckel. I always touted his "Thinking in Java" as the premier book for the learning java developer, but his success started with TiC++. Best of all? Its available free electronically on his website (but I always went out and spent the $30 for the paperback version to support him).

If you pick up the book, you'll understand the language just a little more. He writes the book just how you'd like to learn, not like some math book that blandly gives out information in a manner that puts you to sleep. You can thank me later after reading it ;-)

Programming is based on a 'higher understanding' of how to design something, and the only real 'major' difference between the languages should be the syntax. But having a language based on a natural language and a 'normal' computer language would be the difference of VB and lisp. You just can't design an app the same way for both languages.
