Something Altavista doesn't like.
Absolutely. Bruce Eckel is writing "Thinking In Patterns for Java" that is on his webpage, but the day it comes out in print, I'm buying a copy. Its just easier to read in book form, and easier to pick up for reference. Plus I want to put more money in his pocket, cause he writes the best coding books I've ever seen, and deserves the cash...
So has linux. Linux bashers used it 1-2 years ago and they still cry 'no-user-friendly-apps'. Guess what? Linux has evolved faster than anything out there including windows. You talked about Netscape and Mozilla... Ever tried Galeon? Konqueror (in it's new incarnation) ? Just as windows has evolved to be more 'stable' (as you say), Linux has just gotten better. Try evolution..., galeon..., staroffice...
And yes I dual boot to win2000. Actually, I have it on my laptop. The last time I used it was quite a while ago. Why? well, I can't get a lot of features in IE that i get in galeon. Tabbed-view. Bookmark-management..
I have, in no way, said that linux was poor, or bash linux. I run SuSE 7.2 at home (along with WinME and Win2K). They each are great in different things. I just hate the attitude about MS lately, which I point out in my parent post. If windows opened up their source on everything right now, this community would still find a way to bash them...
I'm getting to the point of being annoyed with people immediately saying "Nintendo == Kids".
I never said that Nintendo==Kids. I said that the audience that nintendo strives for for the gameboy is kids. I had an N64, and I think Nintendo has the best games ever (every game is fun, regardless of the title).
Ship everything open/enabled by default (some Linuxes do this too, hence my preference for OpenBSD).
I think the philosophy is to install everything so Joe Q. Dumbuser will have it when they want to do stuff, and any intelligent user has the knowledge to turn it off if they don't want it. Its easier than having everything turned off, and having all your dumb users calling up asking "why doesn't my chat work".
I also don't like that they want to have Windows in _everything_.
This is just a capitalistic view of their software. Oracle wants everyone to use their DB for everything, Dell wants everyone to have Dell computers, AMD wants every motherboard to have an AMD chip in it. MS is just the most successful in that idiology.
What's funny is that most linux zealots want the exact same thing (linux on every desktop). Most will argue "at least its better quality!", but its still a monopolistic view...
So I guess the news I heard regarding their interest in the portable industry will soon come true, the question is can they take the crown from Nintendo.
Nintendo fought off both Sega and Sony, two big companies. Sony forced Sega to go software only, but we still see nintendoes everywhere. The GB audience is little kids. They know "Game Boy" better than anything MS puts out.
This article is just a slashdot crack at MS, though. "Lets point out the monopoly" article! The way the slashdot community fights with Microsoft is funny, and has quite a pattern. 'Do whatever it takes' is generally the big picture. It isn't about crappy software lately, because the government saw some monopoly qualities, that's what slashdot looks into heavily. The truth is, most people that use linux exclusively hasn't even tried Win2K, which has yet to crash or bluescreen on me. Netscape on linux, and mozilla on linux crashes more than anything on win2k for me. But I'm talking to closed minds here.
Its going to be funny when the monopoly talks die down and people start attacking MS's quality to find its stronger than the last time they used it, so their arguements are moot. Sure, XP has bugs (all new OS's do. Try and tell me that Linux 1.0 didn't crash or have bugs.), and X-Box has its share, but it is the first console released under MS's name. But by the time the monopoly craze goes away, I think you'll be surprised at where MS will be.
Seattle P-I story on MS's latest move towards having their finger in every slice of the content pie.

Sure, if you think about the vastness of space along with the small asteroids (small being relative) actually hitting our tiny planet is remote. But even remote possibilities are possible, and most people think it already happened (dinosaurs), and it will eventually happen again (unless we blow ourselves up).
Damn, you made my point, and now me flaming this so called professor would be redundant, but I, too, have an CompE bachelors, and am a solid programmer.
I feel knowing the inner workings of a CPU, along with compiler theory, and software engineering classes has really increased my coding, and made me a more efficent coder. Also, OO and high design are usually easier to understand by an engineer. And in the business field, you can be the greatest coder in the word, but if you have a bad design, you are still coding crap. Lets face it, design is underrated, and its one of the primary focus' of any flavor of engineering.
My senior year was CompE electives, and I didn't have a single hardware course. My courses were mainly intelligent systems and OO courses.
Sure, I can't tell you the hardcore CS theory behind everyone of my programs, but I can tell you why I chose the specific design and algorithms for each project. And I still get contract jobs, somehow...
Simple, my trolling friend.
Learn to raise your children to understand what's real from what's not.
Back in pioneer days, the father of the family kept a loaded musket by the doors, and somehow none of the kids picked it up and shot their siblings/friends. Even when the parents were away.
How?
They taught their kids wrong from right, good from bad, imaginary from reality.
I played doom since the day it came out on my 286-12MHZ box. And somehow I still became a rational engineer with a family and no history of violence....
Parenting isn't done by just letting your kids watch TV and play videogames. You gotta make sure they understand that its for fun.
Console manufacturers loose money selling consoles (but make money on royalties on the games).
Why would DVD manufacturers be interested in attaching something that would really cut profits? Unless the companies name is "Sony" I'm assuming they aren't getting a cut of the game royalties...
The age of the internet was the hope to break free of the label. The internet (with, say, paypal) would eliminate all the middle men. But, alas, the labels are big enough to support and lobby for laws to keep them alive...
If they'd allow mod'ing of starcraft (like halflife), we'd see a boom in RTS. Since starcraft is only 2.5-D (with the ramps and three possible levels), and warcraft 3 is full 3D, they'd still be able to sell a product, and get people interested in blizzard with the mod'ing.
I would jump at the opportunity to use the StarCraft engine to make mods.
WarCraft 3 looks to bring something to RTS that hasn't really been seen since Star Craft. Different races (4 in warcraft 3!) with completely different buildings, units, and strategies.
Hopefully they'll make the game as balanced as starcraft, and, hopefully, longer lasting online than starcraft (it takes less than 15 minutes for most starcraft games, unless you are super-defense).
FYI, Warren Spector's (*humble bow*) Austin branch of Ion Storm is alive and well. So don't fear, Deus Ex 2 is still churning.
Deus Ex, of course, is the reason Ion Storm Austin is in business. I'm sure you know why the other branch is closed.

To connect multiple TV's to one cable signal, satellite signal, PVR, etc..., just use Leap Frog (there's a wireless one, too, check the website).
If anyone can get me a Aeron chair for under $100, I'll give'm $150 for one!
Dotcom bust has really helped the Herman Miller company....

read my journal, I even point it out myself.

Jesus, at least be a pansy and use "Overrated". Redundant moderation should require proof...

I hope it is never made, honestly.
Ever since starship troopers, I don't want any of the good scifi stories made into movies.
Unless there is absolutely no desecration to the stories, or only minor changes to condense it to ~2.5 hours(like LOTR).
The age of the internet was the hope to break free of the label. The internet (with, say, paypal) would eliminate all the middle men. But, alas, the labels are big enough to support and lobby for laws to keep them alive...

Napster is old old news that no one cares about.

Yeah, slashdot even had an article on it in November.
Repeat articles on slashdot? NEVER!
There's an Iron Chef Marathon?!?!
:-)
W00T!... gotta program my TiVo!
Iron chef, vodka, friends, and a scolding hot wok means great times at my place
Someone's gonna be melted before 2002!
