Sometimes I think that people like differences in culture. Gives them something to complain about. Gives them something to go to war over. It frightens people that they (or their children) may become more of a culture they dispise.
Looking into the future, I forsee homogeny in culture, or vast, vast differences (lines will be drawn).
I hope its homogeny, cause I'd really like to try "combined dishes" like a chinese-italian dish:-)
Actually, I've seen less and less -1 trolling lately.
I doubt this is from lack of trying. They (yes, the people that give you "Your Rights Online") are censoring them pretty hardcore. So what do the trolls do? Work harder and come up with articles like this.
To quote Princess Leia (I'm paraphrasing so don't flame the quote): The harder you squeeze, the easier it is to slip through your fingers!
Resident Evil's are (like an above reply) like halflife. Killing the zombies gets old quick. Sometimes when they jump out you might twitch, but I've never gotten "scared" or "freaked out" with Resident Evil.
Dunno about Parasite Eve 2. Never played.
I think they reason SS2 is such a great horror is the sounds. They aren't scary, but very disturbing.
I've had a similar experience. I have both a windows box and a linux box on my cablemodem.
The first time I had a problem, the techie blamed it on having a linux box on my network. Apparently, "linux causes all types of problems, and isn't good on networks". Called back immediately, got another techie, told him I just had one windows box, they fixed the problem, and haven't had a problem since.
I wouldn't be surprised if they went apesh*t if they found out I had my "Linux poison" on their network;-)
Cargo bays? I don't know... hydroponics deck would be my choice. When you first meet the matron mothers. Sheesh they are freaky sounding.
What about the first time you make it to the captains office (the one that's been talking to you for the first half of the game, forget her name), and the walls drop?
I wasted 4 clips shooting at the walls until I realized what was going on.
...but my local roadrunner said that they'll do their best to help. They say that if you follow NT instruction, it works fine, and they already have a large userbase of XP users without any problems.
Linux, on the other hand, isn't supported, and most of their techies have no idea how to help out. Not that its tough (standard DHCP connetion), but the average user would be better off with XP than Linux right now (sorry if that sounds trollish, but I don't think this article is "news". Anything that can hurt MS in the least is being published now-a-days).
If you have never played "System Shock 2", go out to your local video game store and see if you can get your paws on a copy (shouldn't be more than $5 bucks these days).
It starts off kinda cheesy, but if you only play at night with all the lights out, it'll eventually get freaky enough to scare the bejesus outta you.
Sitting in a corner, you have a gun that's in such bad shape, you anticipate maybe one or two more shots left until it jams. You can hear the mistress coming for you, speaking in akward statements (must protect the baaaby....). You back up into a corner by the opposite door to make a hasty exit, when, while your back is turned, the door opens! You hear "SILENCE THE DISCORD!" as a zombie hits you with a tire iron.
I jumped up, and couldn't get to the keyboard fast enough to actually get outta the way (took 3 hits to kill me).
this can be answered in two questions:
Hemos,
1.) Why do you need the power?
2.) Why is it *any* concern to the/. community?
Also, have you noticed the slight pause after hitting submit? Where you can see the add, but not that you've posted yet? Somethin' fishy is going on...
(Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate II:Throne of Bhaal, The Sims)
That is one HELL of a machine for those three games. Seeing as a 600MHz, TNT2 machine will handle them just as well. Usually, high end machines like what you have are for serious FPS afficianatos (sp?). Another note, is that serious gamers could give a rats ass about their box noise. Usually, the games produce enough sound outta their huge soundcard/soundsystem to muffle anything the box can produce.
Sorry to gripe, but this article is either:
(A) A gloatfest on your new box (which I do myself)
(B) A thinkgeek plug
Umm, yeah cnet put in some stuff that MS has SAID IN THE PAST, but this paragraph should explain what the real price cut was from.
HP has been working with Amazon since October 1999, Balma said, but the big contract win came in May 2000, when HP announced its [linux] systems would replace Unix servers from Sun Microsystems.
They replaced Solaris boxen with Linux boxen. This, actually, has nothing to do with Microsoft.
CNet just put it in there to hype the article.
He wasn't logged in while the message was made (said its an anonymous user). I'm sure its probably him, but I don't think/. should take it to heart until he somehow proves its him.
Wasn't there a book based on using the ternary system, and since they were called "tits", computer scientists couldn't concentrate enough to program, and it started a long drought in technology? I'm serious, I think that's the preface for a scifi book...

So, uh, Beverly Crusher, Troi or Yar?
This questions wasn't asked (Being one of the top Score:5 questions!).
Since the author was too afraid to ask, if you are reading this wil, please answer;-)
Also, did you ever score with any of the redshirt women????
Check this summary: Companies is putting in a standard. Can't modify registry. What am I to do?
Being a consultant, I run into this all the time.
First question: What do you do that REQUIRES you to change the registry? Does your programming? If so, talk to your boss and get yourself cleared of the policy.
Second question: Is there someone higher in the company than you (higher in rank, not drugs)? If so, talk to them about how to handle the situation. If not, you got to go to System Support and talk to them directly.
Regardless of how you answered, you need to either talk with your boss or Sys Support, not slashdot (which may be why this SOE is being implemented in the first place).
This really isn't a question for ask/., its just a developer griping about his job. Personally, I think this shows a lack of trust (pirating software, slacking off, etc...) or the lack of developer computer competence (need a standard for easier fixes).
Either way, it doesn't sound like the company likes their employees, and I'd take off. But for contractors, you just grin and bear it.
Seeing that CounterStrike has the largest online community, killing both Q3 and UT communities, and that quality mods are still coming out of Halflife, wouldn't it be smarter to target the bigger audience??
Homogeny is not evil.
:-)

Same trite as last article.
Also notice that lack of "News for nerds" in the whole article.
Best thing I can suggest is not to post to this article (easiest way to demonstrate that we don't like it).
Got plenty 'o' karma to burn.......

There will always be slackware fanatics to keep it alive.
;-)
There will always be linux hobbiest that will have slackware installs.
There will always be one developer working on some part of it.
It might not always stay up with the rest of the distros (especially large ones like debian, redhat, and SuSE), but it won't "die".
This ask slashdot sounds a touch like the *BSD is dying troll

Thief II was MUCH better than the first (more stealing, less wandering in "haunted" caves).
Still, I never consider it "scary", but the atmosphere was very dark (the second one has a "scariness" to it, but I won't ruin it for you).
Sounds like my next purchase! :-)

... I'd believe that no "technology" or "idea" should be squashed. Isn't that the point of academia? To learn?
I think all the systems and networks at a university should have a splashing of all the old & new technologies, throughout.

From what I've heard, 11/9 is when they'll release the "full" trailer to DVD owners.

I'm perfectly happy with Emacs' calendar.
And, after that comment, I'll duck.
... until "Pr0n Image Search" is available for subscription?
I wanna buy stock the day before.
Your right, they wouldof rejected it, just like mine (this happens sooooo often to me).
after I launch it/me into space with a trebuchet
Thanks to memepool's links, you can Buy a nice trebuchet for only $89 !!!
