Or it could be that you are a full of shit denialist. Sorry the time for engagement is over. You have a first amendment right to be a lying sack of shit. I have a first amendment right to tell the truth, and call you a lying sack of shit. And I don't care how many asshole moderates push my karma down.
And to think, some people wonder why more people don't see things their way...;)
Except that the total amount of proof of anything Manning has done at the moment, is ZERO.
You mean, except for the thing about him pleading guilty to charges? You know, described in that thing at the top of this page we call a summary?
You've never been charged with a crime by the government, have you?
Lemme drop a little free-range wisdom on ya: The justice system is fucked. Often times, accused people are given 2 choices by prosecutors: plead guilty and get a lesser sentence, or fight to prove your innocence (yes, that's right, it's no longer 'innocent until proven guilty') and risk having the book thrown at you. It doesn't matter whether you're actually guilty or not, it's all just a farce to keep the money flowing through.
Don't take my word for it, go steal a candy bar from Walmart* and enjoy the anal-raping courtesy of the US corporate court system.
* Wal-mart always prosecutes. Always.
That's by design, actually. The prosecutor, if he believes you are guilty, attempts to bring the full force of the law down upon you; if you are innocent, then the concept, at least, is that the truth will out (given that you only need reasonable doubt to escape punishment). Due to economic realities, however, we can't afford the costs of a full trial, so in cases where the defendant knows he is guilty and is likely to face the full punishment for his crime, he is given a chance to reduce his punishment and the economic burden on the taxpayers.
If you're innocent, man up and say so. If you're guilty, plea. Don't give me this "I only commited purgery and plead guilty because I thought they were going to find me guilty anyway" crap. We have a justice system to respect your rights, but if you don't use it, it's your own fault.
All the hardcore authoritarian fascists want him dead, I wonder if they'll get their wish. If so, I wonder if Adrian Lamo will feel any guilt at all for ending this guy's life for no fucking reason (attention? "Remember me? I'm still around, everyone!")
Right. Because it's Adrian's fault that Manning chose to distribute documents which he was clearly not authorized to distribute. Whether you think it's right or wrong for him to have distributed them, it's not like anyone can be under the illusion that Manning's actions would have been considered legal. He alone is responsible for what happens to him.
They lead in subsidies and solar power. They also lead in taxes - would you be willing to pay half your income and a fifth of every purchase to the government?
Who has 45 min to learn a new password? I can't see a company willing to pay someone for 0.75hr just to learn a password.
-AI
Well then I suppose you would find a company who finds no point in protecting their most valuable asset (people) from losing their second most valuable asset (information).
Maybe the senior executives would sing a different tune if you showed them that 75% of their current workforce passwords were cracked in 45 seconds or less.
Or they just might figure that people who lack the capacity to memorize a reasonably complex password may not, after all, be all that valuable of an asset.
That sort of democracy can quickly turn into chaos and then anarchy.
You might think that yet Switzerland has a democratic system which is the closest I have seen to the "everyone votes on everything" idea and yet is an incredibly stable country. I think part of the reason for this is that people get to decide things at the local level which makes for strong communities since they have a sense of control. Certainly you don't seem to get the usual sense of powerlessness caused by the politicians listening to rich special interest groups and trampling all over society in their hurry to get that money.
True. However, we also don't vote on everything - our elected politicians make many of the decisions, and we simply hold a referundum if 100'000 people or more sign a petition saying that they think it's necessary.
Can you please stop posting articles from the Local? As I've explained in other threads, it's a "service" that steals content without attribution from local news sources in Germany Sweden and Switzerland, summarizes it, translates it to English, and sensationalizes it, then makes money off of your page views.
It's crap, it's misleading, and at times it's just plain wrong. Pop over to the EnglishForum.ch if you want to see what expats in the area actually think of the Local.
As for this article, we're undoubtedly missing part of the story. Wait a few hours and see what develops once someone links a real news source.
I'm looking to work for a startup (although I currently have a job). If you ever get up and going, hit me up for my resume.
Really? He talks about the experiences he's had with a high-performing team, implying he'd like to get them all together to form a startup, and you think a random post on Slashdot without even a hint of your area of experience, let alone your qualifications, are going to get him to chase you down for a CV?
Man, you don't have to worry about the bell curve problem, you need to start with the basics.;)
Very clever idea, yes, but I wouldn't call it impressive. It's all very simple technology we've had for a while now. Just one of those "Why hadn't anyone thought of that?" ideas.
The only fallacy here is Wikipedia. "Just World" is not a fallacy, as presented by this web site full of false information.
"You reap what you sow" etc are all TRUE. Not a fallacy at all.
Yes. Thankfully, the flying spaghetti monster ensures that people who are mean to others don't get any meatballs with their pasta, thereby ensuring a just world.
I'm not attempting to say Mr. Dotcom is completely innocent in this case, but [...]
Why aren't you? Isn't he innocent until proven guilty? Right now, he's 100% innocent.
Innocent until proven guilty is correctly used with the verb "presumed", not "is". Whether he is innocent or guilty will not change in the coming months - either a crime has already been committed or it hasn't. However, he is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
AC was much better for transmitting back then because transmitting high voltage is more efficient (less current means less copper and less resistive waste) and they had an efficient way of converting high voltage AC to low voltage AC (transformers). Efficient high voltage DC-DC voltage conversion was not something that was possible back in the day.
DC is actually more efficient for long distance high voltage transmission -- they just didn't have the technology to convert DC voltage. Now days HVDC transmission for new long distance lines is much more viable.
I've seen a few ACs on this site that I would suggest converting to high voltage...!
So from the sounds of it, you think waiting a week is reasonable.
How about waiting a month? How about waiting a couple of months? How about waiting a year?
Before pirating in Australia, it used to be a regular thing to have to wait up to a year, before you'd get the latest movies and TV. Even then, we'd only get a small fraction of what was in the US.
I don't get everyone who says that waiting is t possible, whether it's because of social networking or whatnot. My girlfriend hasn't finished book 2 yet, so we're not watching it yet, and it's not difficult. Everyone who uses the day to justify downloading is just looking for an excuse. Man up and admit that you're downloading because you're cheap.
There have been a few articles on ex-pats, and the legal hoops through which people and foreign banks, in particular, have to jump is ridiculous, if not downright onerous. Some foreign banks have simply refused to do business with Americans because of these stupid regs.
You mean the stupid regs that were put into place to stop decades of tax evasion? I don't understand the kind of thinking that complains about regulations without acknowledging why that regulation exists.
I'll give you a hint: It started with Swiss banks and their active role in helping US clients to evade US taxes. Our government decided it was about time for their evasion to end and we're making sure it doesn't' happen again. Hence "these stupid regs"
And in the process, you're punishing those of us who live abroad but can't get bank accounts, adding a ridiculous tax burden to us, and claiming the right to regulate financial operations that happen in other countries just because they do some business in America.
Doesn't the value depend on what we put in the hole? It would be valuable if we could put all the world's corrupt politicians and lawyers in the hole as opposed to say Jennifer Anniston.
Why not Jennifer Anniston? Does being pretty make her oxygen theft any more excusable? And, fair's fair, there are plenty of man-children celebrities who would make acceptable landfill material too.
Oh hell yes!!! Just because you've never exercised your sex drive doesn't mean the rest of us wouldn't like to.
90k USD is only slightly above the average become in Switzerland. That doesn't mean we're all wealthy, but rather that your currency has tanked so badly that ours has shot up in comparison. A person who earns 92k USD here will have a smallish (2 bedroom) older apartment, probably won't have a car, and certainly won't be going out to eat all that often if he has a dependent family.
Oh, and he'll have to pay someone to calculate his American taxes. Depending on his situation, he may owe additional money to the American government. But go ahead, keep telling yourself that it's fair.
Or it could be that you are a full of shit denialist. Sorry the time for engagement is over. You have a first amendment right to be a lying sack of shit. Which of his legs was bionically enhanced, his left, right or third?
Also, FWIW, I have both my legs and wouldn't make it up those 103 stairs.
Worse - it's 103 floors, not stairs. ;)
They lead in subsidies and solar power. They also lead in taxes - would you be willing to pay half your income and a fifth of every purchase to the government?
How was this post modded +5? It's barely understandable and full of conjecture (must have been an executive order, etc.).
Am I missing something, or did today's mod points go to a random number generator?
You can get another job pretty easily. You cannot get new family or friends so easily.
If you're a typical Slashdotter, I suppose that holds true. ;-)
People must be F'in cheap if they aren't willing to spend 99 cents.
To you it may be merely 99 cents but to someone in India it may mean the income of half a day of laborious work
And how many of those 40-dollar-per-month earners are using fancy Android phones, let alone any iOS device?
Who has 45 min to learn a new password? I can't see a company willing to

The only part the /. crowd cares about is the translate to English portion.
If you can find a good news source for the stories in English then post them.
If you can't then translate it and show us what we are missing.
Right. Go back up to the bit about no attribution. The tell me how I should translate it for you.

You forgot the criminal equivalents to each category.
Which, of course, is exactly what Anonymous is. The criminal equivalent to a bunch of bored web surfers.
