    'scuse me. there were many all-in-one computers before the ibm ps/1. the original mac predates it. so does the commodore pet. just a correction. your history is off, but the point is well taken. i can see going after e-machines and future power, but not the fish pc.

    What happened to furthering "stuff that matters". THIS matters. More than Crusoe. More than Linux. More than RHAT or any other stock price. More than patents. People are going to get crucified for being different. The mass media spin is not being challenged from this perspective...except in NOT widely read places like /.

    Go Jon and Hemos and Rob. I admire you stepping up and using whatever clout Andover has to voice these concerns and try to get some REAL exposure.

    Ever eject a disk on Linux/Wintel before, say a copy was completed. Of course you have. What good was the file? SHIT, wasn't it?

    Ever eject a Mac disk before a copy or backup was done? NOPE. Can NOT do it.

    I dunno. Ask the guys at JPL/NASA. They seem to want to keep their Macs enough to complain loud and long. Alot of signla processing gets done on Macs at sci institutions, still. And for image processing...there is not really a substitute in the price range.

    I hate Microsoft. Never use it. Ever. Nothing from them infects my hdd. But, Palm is parrotting Microsoft's PC marketing message. None of this matters. I could give a crap about the number of software titles...Are they any good? This is used against Mac users constantly, but I have no trouble finding enough (too much, actually) software to run. This whole "standard" thing too pisses me off. This gets used vs. Linux constantly by PHBs. So fscking what if it won't run Office. There are options, some of which work better.

    Makes me sick to see Palm ape Microspeak.

    The more I think about this, (1) the more I feel it is down right criminal to stick a backdoor like this into code. This can lead to massive problems for both individuals and businesses that have data stolen (2). Look at the trouble that (3) caused (4) the credit card companies with (5) credit card number lists stolen (6) from their (7) web servers. Add on top of this, (8)(9) there were (10) fraudlent charges to people's (11) credit cards. Deliberate backdoors like this and others make it all that much easier for a cracker or script kiddie (12) to break into a system. Who knows whether (13) this was the exploit used in any of the previous security breaches. I'd bet that some used it; (14) maybe (15)not all, but some. Ponder this: Would you accept a security system for your house if you knew it could be bypassed by anybody with a standard code? Corrections made by the grammar police. Fifteen errors in so short a post. Well, my work is done!

There are alot of Macheads here. I know. I am one. MacWeek even has a slash box of sorts letting us know when there are Mac items for discussion/ learning here.

    Be careful. I am sure that if the /. readership was polled, the total number of people who come here for stuff other than linux, or in addition to linux, may be as large as the poeple who come here _solely_ for linux news.

    I agree, all the religions foster a space where we as humans are portrayed as small, weak, incomplete-in-ourselves. Which is why all of them, xtianity included, need to be monitored. Now, CoS is much more dangerous simply because they are very expert on brainwashing. But CoS is only different-in-degree (as opposed to different-in-kind) from any religion. All such practices (that celebrate myths as truths) should be discouraged.

    No. The above post is right. Amelio bought NeXT at the same price Gassee wanted for Be, which was nowhere near as developed as NeXT. The idea was to get NeXT. Jobs was hired as a consultant. Amelio did not plan on Jobs becoming CEO. It worked out that way, but not by design. It worked that way by boardroom politics. Jobs coming back as iCEO was a good thing (TM), but he was very underhanded in getting that position. Be was overpriced. Gassee wanted 400K for Be Inc. NeXT wanted the same amount. Anyone who looked at the deal, and the comparative merits of the two development teams would have made the same choice.

    Maost of the analogies on /. operate pretty much how I said they do. You really can not tell me that DeCSS is like a gun. I mean a gun implies LIFE OR DEATH responsibility tied to your use/nonuse of it. DeCSS not that grave (pun not intended). It is not a gun. Not even a cheap jailhouse shiv. We are not going to convince a judge or the public with these lines of "reasoning."

    The link is not a gun. The link is not the sky. C'mon guys. The only reason to use analogies is when you can not think through the issue on it's own merits. Analogies never really illuminate anything. They obfuscate. They draw a comparison, often to something (1) overly simple, which reduced the issue to absurdity ie. the code is the sky and it is always blue or (2) Overly controversial, thus making the agents in the case (MPAA, RIAA, Mattel, H4X0RS) out to be Stalin or worse. What is at issue is the right to reverse engineer for interoperability (MPAA DeCSS), The right provide criticism of corporate agendas (Mattel, cpHack) and the right to have your speech/code protected by the First Ammednment/GPL/Licensing terms of your choice. If you can not read the arguments for/against and understand the case on its merits, all you can do is provide underinformed bitching. Sophistry is dangerous for democracy. It functions as a smokescreen, hitting hot-buttons and provoking the basest reactions...Never well thought out opinion/action.

All this means is that code/speech is expression and is protected by the first ammendment. Like Music. Like Books. Like Speeches. All the above can be protected under IP laws. But the gov't can not take away your right to express yourself in song, writing or speaking in public.

I have been sitting here happily using my Mac (from APPL, who really brought the computer to the masses), trying to read up on Linux and BSD (who really runs the web), and all this time I was supposed to beleive M$ was the "innovator" of the industry?

    Wow, this all sounds so familiar. I do not mean the lack of faith in Amiga either. I never owned one. I only know one person who did/does. I am not that impressed wit the oft vaunted interface. But, whether I even like/will buy an Amiga is not relevant. What is is a pattern of posting here that goes way back. EX 1: The Mac is dead. Who cares. EX 2: Amiga is dead, can't we let it RIP.These sound just like: EX 3: Line-ooks. Never heard of it. It will never be let out of the server room. It can not compete with (insert OS of choice) in (insert feature of choice). Give 'em a break guys. They (AMigans and Amiga) have been through buyouts and washouts, and still they are trying.     And what can you change on your box that I can not on mine? There are several vendors of CPU upgrades for the Mac. For 500-1000 you can get aftermarket CPUs (G4s at that) and pop them in the older 603/604 machines. I can get 1GB of RAM into my machine (drools) and 3 HDD. So, why don't you learn a little about the systems you are discussing.
