"(The first shuttle, Enterprise, could not lift off on its own so it was retired. It had to be launched from the back of a 747.)"
While you are correct, i just want to clarify. Enterprise was built as a test shuttle, it was used for glide testing and did not have most the systems to work, engines, space life support. It was built to make sure the glider aspect of it would work. So it wasn't that it was to heavy, or retired, it was just never intended for space flight.
" I just noticed these cases [soldam.com] today, and they made me think of the Cube."
look at shuttle XPC's there not bad priced and are nice little computers. If i stood my SN41G2 on end and put a slot load drive in it, it would be very much like the cube. In the past year the world of SFF computers of cube shape has exploded.
"Yes, but in contrast, the typical custom PC is built to accomplish three goals as opposed to buying a prebuilt desktop:

Far as looks, this thing looks much better then a mac, the G4 tower was nice when it came out, but it is very old and tired now. Thats the only thing there is to compare to as well.
But yeah i don't think there was substantial savings here but it's tempting. 700 bucks for the 800 mhz G4 model isn't bad. you may loose the eMacs monitor but you gain in flexability and not looking goofy.
" XP DOES have some DRM features, built in to Media Player (e.g. you can rip a file from a CD, but only in dumbass WMA format, and only at a low bit-rate)."
You could go to Microsoft.com and buy the addon to allow you to rip MP3's and much more. Remember if you didn't pay anything for your mp3 ripping software your infriging on (can't remember companies name, tompson maybe?) copyright.
eh, i don't know why it did as good as it has for a comment. anyways, the doppler idea is ok, but that assumes i was someplace mid track, i think most people would be somewhere near the start point and away from the thrust, so as to be in a very safe spot, relitive to most other spots. So they would hear no doppler effect.
" You didn't see the trailer after last night's episode? Apparently they ARE going to involve the Borg. Next week.
I wasn't particularly thrilled with last night's episode. And if they're bringing the Borg into the mix, then that just might cross my threshold of tolerance for how Star Trek history is being rewritten"
This is just simple the Prquel Paradox. You did all the stuff lateron allready, so you can't introduce new stuff, because that should have been shown in the later. If your good you can do it but it's hard. But what's really bad is you can't bring in something that first came up in the later. Not much you can do, you just try your best. All they need to do is have some memory erasor (sp) thing later on to fix it.
Similar think about Star wars. Lucus can work the story ok, but how is he ever going to make things go from hoover ships and cool sporters nubean ships and what not, to everything looks like a garbage truck and no nice places, and no hoover ships. He's getting screwed by technolgy, he could have avoided it by making the new ones with 70's tech, but then again he's george lucas.
" Tying a wagon to the back of a bike does not a kinetic sculpture make."
Further more, putting anything on a bike doesn't make it a kinetic sculpture, it makes it a bike. I think for this to be interesting it should have a rule saying you can't used things like bicycle drives. A wheel is fine but run it with a wind turbine, or make it sail powered. Do something with levers. Anything just don't re-invent the wheel by using something allready invented or at the least really common.
Anything moving is a kinetic anything, but jazzing up a bike is lame.
" Pay per view only makes up a very small portion of the entire media universe. There is no reason to believe that VOD will make significant headway against DVD. DVD, VHS, and CDs have the fundamental benefit of being able to be watched/listened to any time that it is convenient. "
Dead on!
VOD is the tech that will fail. People want to have phyical copies of things. VOD means you own (or lease) a virtual copy. It's much the same reason getting music by buying MP3's (say from apple's new service) will not fly in the end. People want to have the CD, a real cd, not a burnt copy. Sure I will buy a cd and rip it and play mp3's on my computer but I want to own a real tangiable version to. I want my movies on DVD, there for me 24-7 and can take them anyplace I want. Buy it once, own it forever.
That would have been a great line if removed the traces on the cpu. Sadly it won't. I know you weren't imnplying it would. But it was just so close to being a great line. Damn chemistry
" Actually, they could very easily know. All they have to do is put some kind of alcohol-soluble, UV ink mark on the chip. It doesn't even have to be visible in UV... that's just if they want to be sneaky about it."
And when they say you cleaned off your artic silver you tell them you used the alcohol to clean of the approved grease so the chip was nice and clean for them.
anyone ever picture seeing chewy's dad and seeing him being bald, and or having a midlife crisis about being bald. See him sitting on a couch blamming the wife for going bald.
Sorry about that, I blame the slashdot threading. Why can't i see all post and keap the tree structure , grrr.
I will see if I have issues someday when i get a graphics card, for now the built in Gforce is fine with me. I tried the EVE beta last night and it looked just beautiful to me. Only reason for getting a card would be to gain capture card and to put a zalman heat pipe on it and remove my northbridge fan, 1 less fan always better.
Why do you NEED 400 fps in Q3? I just don't get the whole needing insane video card thing. I played Q3 with my i810 onboard graphics on my old computer and was happy. Sure i could notice some differance compaired to the insane latest cards of the time, but it wasn't anything that mattered to me. And definitly not an issue where you can't play without the killer card. I personaly would prefer games start using the CPU more and get real physics and material properties and such going on. Thats far more important to me then graphics. At the way they are going computer graphics will be more realistic then real life, and have graphic effects that don't exist in real life.
" It's not a minor spoiler, either. I mean, I hardly obsess over this sort of thing, but given that Chewey is one of the most beloved characters in all of Star Wars, I really think this would have gone over better as a surprise."
Probably very true, I think yoda and his big scene in episode two was somthing that surprised/blew lots of people away. I was waiting a long time for that.
" nVidia's lack of driver support for non-nVidia AGP cards running on nForce2 under Linux is quite a problem for me..."
The issue of how non nVidia cards work with the nforce worried me to. But i haven't heard of issues so far.
For your case all I can say is: You made the choice not to run windows. Having any support past that is going the extra mile for a company. When you decide to go down the road less traveled you can't expect to have all the same service stations. Be happy hardware companies support other OS's at all. You can be pretty damn sure it's rare they make money off doing so.
Your problems arn't the chip, it sounds like the mobo. CPU's are a some are good some bad depending on the person. They are one of the most consistant from one to the next thing there is that is manufactured. If your having a problem with your athlon and it's not a AMD admited problem, it probably doesn't exist and it's your setup. There will be ten's of thousands of people with the exsact same core with no problems. The fab process is to good for weirdness. If the chip came out bad (any defect) compaired to the other ones made from that waffer it would have never worked and thus not be in your computer.
Also, the 1.2 athlon is a hot chip, the 1.4 was the hottest athlon ever. The palamino core and later cores reduced temps a good deal. Unfortenly memories of the hot athlon stuck. People still say how hot they are when on the latest chips they are cooler then P4's
"If only it came with a self-destruct mechanism, it might overcome the shortcomings you mentioned:) "
I belive military hardware has self destruct, or we destroy it. Like spy planes computer stuff that is. I belive they smash the drives and toss acid on them.
Now this would be a neet feature in a harddrive. Have a mod you can trigger that causes the pickup head to grind the plater in pre chosen spots to be destroyed or just have a capsule of acid in the drive and when needed you can trigger it and she kills the drive. I can see hads now for the western Digital Canibal drive series, the drives that eat themselves (intentionaly).
" You can't look at porn on a typewriter, either."
sure you can, download some porn, print it out (static porn works best for this) insert the paper in the type writter and keap hitting return.
Curious to see how many would jam the typewritter.
Also one could do a sorta ascii art porn on there, though you don't have many charactors to work with.
