My dad was a cop at one point in his life as well. Funny thing is that it was the only place that would hire him after he came back from Vietnam. He's an ethical man and I'm sure he wasn't some asshole who loved to bust jaywalkers and stoners.
My beef is not with cops. It's with the mindset of police administrations who think they need to run their district like a corporation. We don't need that kind of mentality. Law enforcement should not be a profitable organization. There shouldn't be little charts everywhere saying how many criminals they busted each year. And they should be preventive. DARE is a good initiative, I don't agree with some of what they teach and I feel they should be much more objective, but it's a step in a good direction.
Motorcycle cops should be abolished, plain and simple. Their only justification for existence is to make money from tickets and that's just plain wrong. If they really wanted to stop speeding, they would put photo-radar at ever mile marker. The current form of selective enforcement does little more than solidify the belief that they are doing it for the money rather than for my safety.
I'll stop this rant now because it doesn't solve anything. I'm much better off voting these fuckers out of office and putting some ethical people with common sense in there.
This just exacerbates the problems with the current police system. Cops would much rather sit by the side of the freeway eating a donut, drinking some coffee and pointing a fucking radar gun at your car. God forbid they actually help people out in recovering stolen property, that has to be done by the individual these days.
Why is that? Is it because traffic citations are easy and gain them money? Is it because they can bust someone for possession of a "controlled" substance and also get forfeiture of property? Is it because law enforcement is just lazy when it comes to going after real criminals who leave behind real victims because it's not economically viable?
The simplest reasons that spammers "get away with it":
1) Forged headers (SMTP auth would alleviate)
2) ISPs turn a blind eye or aren't as responsive as they should be. Many are repeat offenders which labels them "soft" on spam prevention.
A lot of people have already commented on #1 so I'm going to skip that one.
In short, the accountability should come to the ISP, because they are the ones you inevitably allow this to happen. @Home or similar could implement a per day limit on outbound emails, same for the fre services, Yahoo! and Hotmail. There needs to be a clearinghouse for spam notification, someone who tracks spam and spammers, period. Fines should be imposed on ISPs who allow bulk email to originate from their service. Their choice should be simple: don't let spam originate from your system or face the penalty (steep fines, this could be used to fund the clearinghouse). Leniency could be worked into this, an ISP may have X number of reports per day based on the number of IPs they have. X should shrink every year.
The clearinghouse should also be audited on a yearly basis and the results made public (what ISPs spam the most/least, amount of fines paid, etc)
Personally I think we should be forwarding our spam to our elected representatives with full headers. Then again most representatives don't even read their own email.
I am not required to own credit cards. This one is the easiest. Credit is a scam anyways, I cut mine up a long time ago.
I am not required to have a social security number. Unless you never plan on getting a job, this one is REALLY hard to live without.
I am not required to have a drivers license or any kind of ID. Some states/cities have laws on the books where it is illegal not to show photo ID to a police officer on demand. Not having ID can have you end up in jail. Stupid laws, but they are real.
I am not required to have a bank or checking account. This can be difficult, but if you manage to get a job that pays in hard cash, you probably weren't planning on using a bank anyways:)
The DMV is just a puppet of the insurance corporations. Did you know that your DL can be administratively suspended for changing insurance companies and not telling the old one?
The id sequence would probably be something akin to CONCAT(idstate, idlicense) as idcitizen. So the guy in MO would be 32666 and IL would be 22666 (or something similar).
Really not all that difficult to transition to this system. If they are smart they will keep the license numbers seperate and changeable, but just link them into the database via SSN.
Here's the deal. Windows works for my desktop, but I would rather cut off my nuts than to use a windows server.
MS = desktop OS
Linux = server OS
PS - VA Software was at 0.78/shr last month, I'm kicking myself for not buying any... it's up to ~3/shr now. Who knows, maybe VA could actually pull this off without going bankrupt first.

I'll let you decide.
Anyone else get the feeling that Bernie Shifman is the Internet version of a prank call?
This would be the most elaborate hoax I have ever seen if it is.
Then again maybe this guy needs to be slapped upside his head.
5) those who can't count, durrrrr
I can't believe I just did that, ha.
There are three types of programmers:
1) collaborative coders
2) solo coders
3) adaptive coder
4) copy coders
Guess who's getting the most done?
I have IE1394 (firewire) on my Compaq laptop. It's not as uncommon as you think, it's just been slow to be adopted.
@Home fucked everyone by blocking port 80 across the board, not just those with IIS.
Some flaws, but a good direction:
- DNS could be hacked and the TTL set extremely low (most people wouldn't notice).
- Free mail services.
- Open relays are still a problem.

The laws aren't the only problem, it's the selective enforcement that bothers most people.
No, it just increases accountability.

Hey, that was actually kind of fun. I need to get a doorbell cam! It's probably in the FAQ and I missed it, but how much did all this x-10 stuff cost?

Books? Say what you want about Amazon, it still beats going to a book store (price & selection).
Just buy a small commercial chiller and put your PC in it. Why are people still doing this crap with water?
Besides, if you really wanted something that was portable you would get a laptop.
Thank you CmdrObvious
such irony.
