My response was primarily oriented around the concept of lowering our salaries to compete.
Anyway, I don't disagree with what you are saying. However, you can expect this to be a temporary situation. Eventually these indian contractors will figure out what they need to do to improve communication and quality. Then, we're back to the same problem. For some reaon, we think that other countries are incapable of change. This isn't true. They will change. They will do what they need to win. Get that through your head.
This guy makes processor optimized builds of Firefox. He even provides some numbers of tests he did on an Athlon system. Anyway, if you use a moox build with some other minor tweaks (like pipelining), you will definitely notice a difference.
Not gonna happen dude. If Firefox ever does get decent market share, Microsoft will release a new version of IE that actually has useful enhancements in it and it will be game over. It's a war you can't win. At best you can skirmish for a while.
I wish it were otherwise, but that's just the cold hard realities of the situation.
What difference does it make? Rails doesn't have the scalability of Java J2EE anyway. In my mind, it is at best,.NET level of usefulness. Which means it's great for prototyping and small apps with no concern for a large user base.
Don't be an idiot. You will NEVER be able to lower your salary as much as people in 2nd and 3rd world countries can. Never. Even India will shortly find that they are considered "expensive" compared to the Russians, et. al. Globalization does not mean you can simply lower salaries. It means the jobs simply leave to another area. It's fantasy to think you can chase the stuff leaving. The only thing we can do is find something to replace what we're losing. This will be a constant process for us since we are more expensive than most of the rest of the world. As developing countries improve their education, learn English fluently, and learn technology; we will get kicked out of the positions we are in.
Unfortunately, we have nothing new to replace what we are losing. This will be our downfall.
Groovlets! Groovy, an open source scripting language based on Java, has a component called groovlets which lets you do the same kind of thing except I think groovlets would actually be quicker. Personally, I wouldn't use Rails or Groovlets for serious production work but for rapid prototyping, I'd use groovlets in a heartbeat. Here's some links:
This whole debate is a joke. Neither CSS or XSL is even remotely adequate for reliable printing. Currently, the only way to ensure printouts will look the way they should is to use PDF. I wish it weren't true, but it is.
Honestly, I don't give a damn what he does in his private life. The "dresses" reference was in regards to Bakula's work on Quantum Leap. If he's gay, bi, or whatever; it doesn't make any difference to me.
Seriously, how did they expect that show to take off when they hired a guy who used to wear dresses as the captain of the enterprise? He doesn't walk, talk, act, or do anything that makes me believe he is a leader, let alone the captain of the Enterprise. I'd take Janeway over him any day of the week. Unbelievably bad casting, imo.
1) I wasn't speaking against the South. I stated I "like the South." I currently live in Minnesota. I liked North Carolina a lot more (except for the rediculously humid summers). I am from California. I do not like Cali now because it is too heaviliy populated. Don't presume to know me or my prejudices.
2) I can only show what I have seen. I have not lived in RI or anywhere else in New England so I have no comment for those parts of the country.
"The fact is that education has been geared primarily to teach men for a long time"
Not this man. EVERY person, regardless of gender, has different innate proclivities for devouring information in different ways. Schools do not deal with these differences. I was bored shitless pretty much up through age 18. Our educational model is old, generic, and lacks the flexibility necessary to provide the most benefit to each student.
I can say with a degree of certainty that if you are in the South, you will have issues starting your career. They *expect* women want to be married, have kids, etc. So, given your age, they will be expecting you to want to do this fairly soon. This will count against you in your job hunt. Good luck. You have very tough choices to make and you will find that you cannot do everything you want to.
Before anyone claims I'm flamebaiting...I lived in the South for many years and knew many employers who flat out tell you this stuff. Hell, I like the South. Southern women rule.:)
While your statement is far too general, I do agree with you for the most part. For example, I have tried to find good magazines in the U.S. on photography and photographic equipment. There are none that I'm aware of that are anywhere near as good as the european ones. Read a review of a camera in a European magazine and it is FAR more detailed and informative than anything I've read in an American magazine. Hell, I can get far more detailed information on dpreview.com than I can get in any American magazine and it's completely free.
So I guess when the tobacco companies were blatantly lying about not knowing that cigarettes cause cancer and other health problems they weren't simply protecting themselves from damage? It was all simply "BLOWN UP BY THE PRESS and PUBLIC" right?
And people in the business world ALWAYS follow codes of ethics right? Is it going to be necessary for me to prepare a laundry list of companies that have blatantly violated all kinds of ethics?
Btw, I have a friend in PR. She has worked for some well known companies and is an ethical person. However, she won't hesitate tell you that there are many companies that have built PR departments organized around protecting their asses for stuff they know damn well is evil.
"The internet and telecom is not technology, just a subset of it. I wish people would remember that fact, and not base the entire tech sector on just a few areas."
Actually, you're wrong. We don't build any of the electronic gadgetry you see sitting on the shelves of Best Buy. We don't even design most of it anymore. This is all done in various parts of Asia. Software and telecom are all that's left in the USA. Therefore, software and telecom are what defined the tech bubble for us. If you want to say that "internet and telecom" are just a subset of our tech sector, feel free. However, that "subset" is the primary things that made our bubble.
I can assure you that your price estimates are much higher than what Apple pays. They can easily build the device for well under $500. Their cost hit is going to be in the marketing of such a device. If the point is to lure PC buyers to the Mac platform, they will have to advertise like mad. This will cost them dearly. They will lose money on it because of marketing costs but they will make it back in the long run if they can convert some of the PC people out there. And basically, anyone who isn't a gamer is a good candidate for the Mac.
My point was that just because there's no phosphers involved, doesn't mean it can't be done. And thanks for the lesson in how displays work...might have been interesting if I didn't already know it.

Pretty slick stuff.

How do you feel about being called a quant?

Good riddance.
Please...the proper response on /. is "how long till someone gets linux running on it?"

Clearly you were trying to play a pirated DVD.
Is the same as the pornsplosion I get when browsing the web?
I will personally pay $1000 dollars to the first person who gets linux running on it.

Looks like the io2 doesn't have this problem. According to the website you can pass the information easily into Word or emails, etc.

Well, if you can get a laser pointer defined as an "armament" then it should have the same constitutional protections that a gun has.
I got modded as a Troll??? wtf
