    UNIX System Services for OS/390 (and z/OS)?

    I remember fiddling around with USS a bit on zOS. Kind of strange, but you could actually do some things once in a while that way that were much easier than trying to destroy one's brain on the twisted mess called JCL.

    OpenJDK does not suffer of this bad update process because distributions use their package manager to push updates.

    That assumes one allows unattended updating or a strict adherence to checking and installing the updates manually, or not being allowed to install updates because it can only be an approved configuration and the configuration change board never meets...

    A website registers a Service Worker with the browser. Service Workers are small JavaScript programs with super powers like intercepting network requests or running even when their parent website is closed.

    What could possibly go wrong?

    I'm not sure I have found a single document that I would call a language specification. They seem to say the language will be officially defined by a bunch of unit test definitions.

    The great thing about solar farms is 50 foot of trees at the edge of the property completely hides them from ground level.

    If you live in a region where 50 foot trees grow naturally, then they are a reasonable sight block. In parts of the world, those trees would require assistance to survive, possibly using water that isn't available locally.

    In other words, you as a CableCard user were treated as the second-class red-headed stepchild, by the fact that they forced you to actually go to one of their shitty stores and stand in line rather than mail you the device like they would for somebody asking for a set-top box.

    No, I chose to go over there myself. Needed to get out of the house anyway.

    The only downside of Cablecard is that you have to get the cards from your local cableco. But there aren't many practical ways around this.

    On the upside, the last time I had to do this with Comcast (Colorado), it was pretty painless. Just walked into the local Comcast storefront, stated what I needed, had it within 5 minutes. Called to activate it, was fully functional within 5 minutes of the call.

    Every commercial break is about 1.5 minutes of ads.

    That sounds like a much more reasonable amount of ads than the common 4-6 minutes of ad breaks in some broadcast TV shows recently. I find myself routinely queuing up 4 minutes of ad skip on my Tivo Roamio.

    I agree, I found Star Trek Continues to be the more enjoyable fan series, in my opinion they are more like TOS and are nicely put together.

    Heh, I've been reading "net news" since about 1983-ish. Many of the news groups I've been following over the years have dwindled off to almost nothing or nothing at all, some just quite recently. I remember downloading one of the early versions of Perl with a news reader.

    I see this all the time also. However to be fair, the other day I observed a Prius driver blow through a stop sign and dart across an intersection in front of a cyclist obeying all the rules. There are all kinds of idiots on the road. Drive defensively like they are all out to kill out.
