OK it's all impossible and you know best right? Hah its guys like you that can't seem to move forward and basically say no to everything immediately before even thinking that keep the pc industry where it is. You are the kind of guys that give engineers bad names. Whats freaking wrong with a botle opener on the case? IF it was case mod with a cold cathode lit bottle opener for Bawlz you'd be stroking yourself over it right now.
About time that nintendo churned out more of the same! I can't wait till I get to play (and pay for) games I've played on all the other nintendo consoles again and again!
maybe change the venue already

How many fantasy games do we need anyway? Why are they all middle earth knockoffs? City of Heroes success is is weighted on the fact that it's not swords and sorcery. Tons of people tried Anarchy Online because of the cool cyberpunk world. Perhaps if Wish had tried something besides being Everquest Junior they could have done something?
Dude who cares, put down your teddy bear and look at this for what it really is. This is a media war, a dope war. The old media is fighting the new media on who will sell us our necessary violent imagery. I am certain your logic made sense to you while you were high but really it' so very simplistic. Video games did not invent car jackings, they were invented sometime shortly after cars. (yes there were jackings in the 20's) The news media sensationalized them, the movies and tv followed. Vid games are the latecomer. Because games involve the user and take mindshare away from the old media they are fighting back. The same happened with movies, comics, tv, records etc. So far society has not gone to hell, violent crime is down. Way down.
We are taking their flamebait and looking away from real issues.
I am a parent, 12 year old boy. I let him play GTA3 & VC. Big deal. Manhunt, my nephew has it we watched him play. Looks rather boring compared to a good slasher movie.
When are people going to realise that games like movies and books are for all ages and not just kids? There are books for children and books that you wouldn't want a 12 year old to read. There are movies that you wouldn't want your 12 year old to watch.
Get over it America, games are not just for kids, any more than books or movies are.
The real problem is player experience curve. Yes there are 400k subs in EQ, all of them over level 25 or 50% max level. The problem with being a newbie or trying to re enter a world is that after the first rush, no one new signs on. the population all ages together, with NO new blood.
Yes there are many people that start new chars but really, I left Everquest for a year and now, the place is a ghost town anywhere that is tailored for players under level 30 or so. The majot cities that once wer actually like cities are now like abandoned malls in the bad part of town.
well maybe not you and I but as consumers we all buy into what we want. I am sick of everquest but still play. I tried Anarchy Online, Eve, MotorCity, Earth and Beyond. NO ONE PLAYS THEM...
Outside of the extra virtual wall I really see nothing here but standard marketing proceure. change the color and call it enhanced, ohh yea and charge more. I want to see some improvements, not just colors and exta flashing lights.
when FT came out it was also on the mac, working in a design firm we all had macs and this was one of the most enjoyable games. I still remember co-workers calling me at midnight asking how I got through the junkyard.
Overall I hope they haven't given up on the game, It would be great to have a deserving sequel as opposed to something that my kids would make fun of me for.
I have noticed this activity as well. I work for a marketing firm (bleh) and we do studies all the time. We wee working for a large toy mfg and seperated children into 2 camps, builders and drama.
The builders are probably most of us, we took lego's and made stuff. The drama kids took the stuff others made and created a story for it. My child is a drama kid. The people who make games seem far to often to be builders. My son doesnt often play games the way they want them played. He prefers to just run around and do stuff. Like your child war of the monsters is more fun if you are just a monster walking around smashing than trying to win. To him what is winning?
I am a gaming parent, I have a 12 year old son. Before the age of 5 I didnt let the boy have a console. We played PC games. I did let him play wolfenstein, haha it was free and was funny to watch a 3 year old running around a maze of nazis shooting.
"Parents need to think about what is being displaced when kids play video games, and balance any possible improvement in visual attention with that," said Jeanne Funk, a professor of psychology at the University of Toledo who has conducted several studies on the effects of video game violence.
What is being displaced? Watching TV? Learning to Smoke? Finding alchohol and drugs? Basically my son and his freinds DO go outside, they do, have fun and ride bikes and skateboard, but when they skateboard they are Tony Hawk. When they play they are Shinobi or Ryo. How does this differ from I as a child playing I was Batman? His freinds are all bright interesting geeky boys.
I believe the only thing being displaced by games are things that are best pointless and at worst abhorrent. Gaming brings our family together. when you sit and game with your child you share an expierence not unlike visiting an amusement park or playing softball. You compete and you co-operate. The most important thing is you spend time with your child sharing an activity they do and can enjoy the rest of their life.
This is more a testament to the way we have been TRAINED to play games than to the game itself. What do you do if I sit you in a sandbox? what do you do if I hand you a blank sheet of paper and some crayons? Do you wonder where the picture and lines are?
I have found EVE to be the most liberating game I have ever played. I can do WHATEVER I WANT. I can change my stats, there are no CLASSES. I can go shoot bad guys, I can shoot good guys, I can rob people, I can hunt don those who rob others. This is the tip of the iceberg. OK another thing to remember is we are all in beta. supposedly alot of content is not in there.
My Disclaimer: I may sound like a fanboy, if anything I am a (45 year old) fanboy of gaming in general. I went into the beta dead set on disliking eve from reading posts that dissed it everywhere.
I like it I want to try it. The crew problem is twofold, what od you do when your crew is not online and well everyone wants to be the captain. I have read that the largest problem with mmog is that westerners want to all be cowboys and heros and really dont undertand the concept of teamplay or sacrafice for the greater good.
Every kid on EARTH knows MP3. It is cool sounding, even moms and dads know it. Every time I see orgg vorbis i think of some remote or breakfast dish. I dont see it happeneing.
OK the only way Redhat is easier than windows is if you select the defaut easy install that will autopartition etc. Then you end up with 500 different text based email programs, sendmail, etc, etc. Whenever I have to upgrade a server (I don't do it that often) it is a six to ten hour job. Something always goes wrong. The red hat installer is ugly too. I am no windows fan bit my dad (60+) can install windows, but the is no way he could perform a redhat install.
This is one of my biggest complaints with linux. Until you take it away form the tech boys (I'm one so shut up) and let some real usability interface experts work on it. Forget it. It will be nothing but a lab and server OS. Quit fooling yourself that you have any chance of even beating the mac on the desktop.
I live in Columbus OH. I know Mark, he's a memeber of the "artiste underground" here. I think it's funny. To see this supposed anarchist tacitly defending corpoprate america is really entertaining.
The sad part is that all these aretists that are about to lose money Never make any in the first place. A recording contract gives you money that you give right back to the corporation that gave it to you.
Then they sell your music giving you a tiny fraction of the sales that they keep until the original advance is paid back to them.
Musical artists make thier money from touring and selling tshirts, the only people really being hurt by this are the mega corporte superstars (heheh mettalica) and the record companies.
The other side is that most people I know who use the napster end up buying the cd anyway as they cant't find what they really want or some almost complete song has propagated itself through the entire napster system like a virus.
This would be no different than me reg Slashdot.COM and calling it geek news for eunuch's. This was not a parody but a deliberate confusion and reactionary site. People were confused by it. Sorry but you guys are a bit off base here.
I was on the beta for AC I play EQ.. Playing AC is like playing in a vacuum compared to EQ. AC is the Temple while EQ is the Bazaar. The thing that makes EQ for me is the Human Interaction, it is one noisy game, At it's finest it is a chat room with a game attached. daddio
I play Eq and as anyone else who plays knows EVERYTIME you log on they require you to read and agree to the license. It has been a long standng joke that they change the license regularly without telling us.
This is, while I can see there side, just the latest in turning the world of Norrath into more of a police state. Over the last few months they have recuited more guides (read police) to enforce their new play nice policy.
Basically the policy is that anyone who pisses off anyone else is up for disciplinary action that include suspension and expulsion. (sounds like high school no?) While on the one hand they have created a very nice game and are wildly successful, theat success has caused growing pains on their side.
A few examples of the pains are the fact that each server is disigned to have 1000 - 1200 people playing on it at any one time, you are hard pressed to find any server that has less than 1800 users and many are hitting 2000 during peak hours. For those that haven't experieinced once you select a server that is where your avatar lives it's life, forever. No crossing from one server to another. As your friends join up they want to hang w you so they joing your server compunding the problem.
This excess of players stresses the system on two fronts of course the technical side with zones and servers crashing sometimes for days losing the entire player database, but also the in game resources are pushed having not been designed for that many people. This causes a shortage of things to do with people camping waiting for the first enemy to appear and not only battle the enemy but argue with other players over who it belongs too. This breeds animosity among players who are NOT allowed to kill one another (except under certain mutally agreed circumstance. So now maybe you understand. While Verant has learned from the mistakes of Ultima they have still created their own special problems.
Overall though the game is so very well done and when it works the experience is so cool that we all hang out and keep playing. For the unititated all I can say is that the social aspects of the game are in my opinion what keep people playing.
OK it's all impossible and you know best right? Hah its guys like you that can't seem to move forward and basically say no to everything immediately before even thinking that keep the pc industry where it is. Thanks again for the insight. I guess this is why Nintendo is on top and no one is buying those long games like Halo 2 or GTA!
Developers pay attention, your audience wants repeats and rehashes of 20 year old entertainment not large expansive and immersive worlds to play in.
About time that nintendo churned out more of the same! I can't wait till I get to play (and pay for) games I've played on all the other nintendo consoles again and again!

Do we need virtual urban renewal projects?
well maybe not you and I but as consumers we all buy into what we want. I am sick of everquest but still play. I tried Anarchy Online, Eve, MotorCity, Earth and Beyond. NO ONE PLAYS THEM...
Why do movies suck, because we go to them.

Yea sad to see NT go as it is to see Strom Thurmond go... its not.

I always wanted my mojo risin! heheh what the heck is MOJO! this sounds really wacked, the common currency, mojo. funny really I can't stop saying it.
