IRIX is the most stable unix I have used. It hardly ever crashes. OS updates don't break the system. The desktop is quite nice although not as nice as gnome. But that's not a problem because IRIX can also run gnome!

I know with a 64 processor machine I would prefer to use IRIX if I could. Linux is a good second choice.

Hopefully video / nic / other expansion cards for the desktop pc will eventually look something like a game console cartridge, ie all the electronics are safely enclosed in plastic, (with relevant cooling slots if so required.)All you need to do is find a blank slot at the back of the PC (protected by a spring loaded dust cover, super nintendo style) and ram it in. The card powers up, The BIOS/OS detects and configures the card and you're good to go!

I agree with the idea of using enclosed hot-swap cartridges, but I think it should be taken a step further. Make everything use those cartridges. The motherboard should just be a backplane built into the chassis, and the cpu/ram/bus controller built into a cartridge too. That way any part could be upgraded without throwing out the rest, and there would be no more problems trying to replace second rate parts on integrated motherboards.

About a year ago I cut down my caffeine intake dramatically. Now I have 1 or 2 coffees a day, or a coke instead. No Penguin mints. The difference was incredible: Hardly any migraines, I was able to sleep at night, I was more active in the evenings. As a bonus, my pericarditus (inflamed muscles around the heart) went away completely.

I still enjoy my coffee and caffeine, but I think it should come with a health warning. We certainly shouldn't be giving so much of it to children.

Unless you like being squeezed in like sardines, roasting slowly in other peoples sweat and waiting ages between stations. Just recently the Central line was out of use for months after a derailment triggered a panic check of every train on the line. That's the central line, you know, the one that carries most of the traffic every day. Of course that's nothing against underground trains, just that they have to be properly funded and managed before making them the only form of transport.
