  4. Cell phones ... on Boeing Scraps In-flight Internet Access · · Score: 1

The problem with cell phones in a plane is two fold:
        - distance from tower
        - rate of movement of plane

For the first point, because the cell phone is so far from the tower it is actually boosting its signal output to maximum. As for the second point, the plane is moving so fast that they phone is consistently trying to shift to different towers. The solutions for in flight phone usage, I believe, work on the basis of having an in-plane base-station and then the plane communicating with a satellite. This reduces cell phone signal output to something controlable and also ensures a fixed communication point.

While there is the possibility that airlines don't want using cell phones, so they can charge you extra for their phones, there is another possibility: Airliners use IFR (instrument flight rule), and anything that could be disruptive to the instruments needs to be eliminiated. No airline wants to be responsible for an aeroplane going down because of a cell phone, even if there is a 1 in 1000 probability. Unless there is guarantee the risk is less than 0.0001%, then no airline is likely to want to risk profits or reputation.

Sorry, I didn't mean to indicate that he was a jerk. I should have just said 'you mileage might vary', since what I meant is that you aren't always going to get the same service in each store. Sometimes the initiative, or lack, of one person can make a big difference.

There is a problem with the term 'terrorist' that is thrown around. It is the label that is applied to any entity that the people in power aren't happy with. If Hitler was in power today, then the French resistence would probably be terrorists. Heck the allies could even be called terrorist during the second world war, since they were upseting the German power. The CIA could be called terrorists for setting in place revolutions and destabilising governments in certain south Americain countries. I could go on, but hopefully you get the idea.

Sure some of the people who are unhappy with the world today do come countries where their main religion is Islam, but people do things in the name of the religion, but not necessarily for reasons of the religion. I would also doubt they are the only people unhappy and wanting to make themselves heard, yet they are the one group which is getting labelled and ignored. Do you see any attempts for real diplomacy from either side. Calling a group terrorist is the best way to ignore them and not have to work with them.

Sometimes you look at the security measures in place at airports and you have wonder whether it is just for show? Look at when foot and mouth desiese what going on the UK, they got you to walk on antiseptic carpets, though the shoes you used on them farm would probably be in you suitcase. Not taking books on, not taking water on (a PH test would identify the substance quickly), all sounds over reaction and just something to please the people who don't want to think.

You wouldn't want to be stereotyped, you wouldn't want people to judge you on the choices of your government, so don't stereotype entire groups of people. Judge each person for who they are. There are crazy people the world over, there are sane people the world over, there are nasty people the world over and there are kind people the world over. Don't fall into the trap that propagenda forces you into.

It is the wrong time, since the processor change is already a selling point and the hardware team is still trying to deal with how the processor change effects everything. I am sure when Apple is settled into the new processor architecture we will see more cosmetic changes to the cases that can be shown off to the public.

  17. Re:Alot of damage needs to be undone on Apple Announces New Open Source Efforts · · Score: 1

I am a big supporter of open source, but I don't see open source as a right and I don't expect everything for free. Unfortunately many do think a program being open source is a right and do expect everything to be free. Someone needs to spend time and energy developing software, so unless they are doing it as a part time job then they need some sort of compensation, and usually the best is money - you still have to pay for food and rent, of course the hardware to develop the software on. The danger of opening up too much is that your closed sourced competitors can take advantage of your work and you also reduce your income. Therefore what you open up needs to work to your advantage, otherwise why bother being in business?

When a company like Apple or Sun opens up their otherwise closed source software we should be grateful, rather than thinking 'about time'. These companies are there to make money and if everyone is trying to have a free copy of their software, then revenue goes down, and if no one buys the hardware, then the revenues goes down even further. If revenue is zero, then you can imagine how good that looks.

Be happy with what you have, be happy with what you can get, or provide constructive value to the process.
