The TLDs are VERY important, since they help categorise the structure in terms of a tree and give a clear defintion of who is responsible for which subset of the tree.

Doing what they are doing could potentially screw up internal networks and cause more problems than it solves. Imagine that all your internal hosts have the prefix "internal" and another site pops up called "internal", we would then have the issue of myhost.internal being difficult to resolve. Is it inside the network or outside? I have already have seen something like this happen when internal domains use .local, yet at the same time .local is reserved for use by mDNS.

One thing that is worth sharing is the answer 'makaveli87' (post #79 in the Xbox Forums) gave about his contact with MS Support:

"Ok I phoned tech support, I was on hold for about 40min. The first guy didn't really know what he was talking about, he kept trying to tell me to do things I had already tried like unplug everything or "read the manual" so he connected me to someone else. This guy seemed like a gamer or he at least knew what he was talking about. He told me that they were having several problems with the launch consoles, the hdd problem, overheating, something to do with the HD to SDTV thing on the back, game disks being scratched , problems with the operating system and a few disk read errors.
He said the overheating problem will be the most common and that this is what I have. (If your console turns off or the screen freezes 90% of the time its an over heating issue. If you get one of the error screens its and OS problem.) he said for both of these problems they need to replace the console and that it would take 6-10 weeks!!! I asked why and he said that they are experiencing more problems then hey had hoped and that he is supposed to say 6-8 weeks, but last week he was telling people 4-6 and those people would be waiting until mid-january. He wouldn't go further into that though. He did tell me that I could hold onto the system and use it as much as I can for 2 or 3 weeks, send it in then and I would still get it back 6-10 weeks from now.
Anyways the warranty covers any of those major problems I stated above so that's good. I guess #1 on MS list is to sell all of their consoles to new customers and let the people with problematic ones wait until after the holidays."

I was speaking to one headhunter who said that one company wanted someone who could hit the ground running, because they had a tight deadline, and then as the project got closer to the finish date, and they still hadn't found such a person, they became fussier about thre criteria. I think it would be AOLs interest to actually come up with clients for alternative OSs (MacOS X and Linux being the main two), since it would reduce the need for a third party to hack the system. Then again, there shouldn't be anything stopping AOL from using a Bit Torrent based solution, and then simply requiring that you visit their site to view the catalogue - ok I haven't thought about all the practical issues yet. If the ads are in the "master" copy as opposed to being tagged on prior to download, then this shouldn't cause too many problems.

Given the past history AOL has had with Apple (from Quantum Computer Services to eWorld to iChat) it would make sense for them to maintain this relationship and produce something in a format suitable for the iPod. MPEG4 and H.264 are both becoming more common and are considered industry standards, so in using this format the shows should potentially play on the iPod, most computers and then eventually any other portable video players. Sure the quality is not the best, but if you want good quality with no adverts, then you always have the option of buying the season DVDs.

  23. Nintendogs disproves that on Revolution Least Expensive Next-Gen Console · · Score: 1

I wonder whether that is really true. In fact I would say it is the opposite, since most of the other game consoles show off the "how many people can we kill" type games. Nintendogs as an example is actually a game that has actually brought a number of non-gamers into the fold.

Most of the other platforms seem to be sticking to what they know and are not really trying much that is new, if at all. What they are parading is more performant systems, $$$$ network play and a hard-disk. While I do feel that the revolution could have benefitted from an HD, especially for MMORPGS, I would be curious to see why they decided not to go with one. The Revolution actually has two USB 2.0 sockets which could actually be a better solution for expansion. This would potentially allow you to plug in any HD, or solid state storage, you want and not be limited by want the manufacturer forces upon you.

The truth is the market has already shown that what we thought was true may not be true tomorrow. I would like to see Nintendo do well because of their innovations and encouraging people to play different. At the same time the other platforms certainly have the macho type "bigger is better" approach. What will make the difference is marketing and what games come out. Nintendo already said in the past the many people buy their console because of one game, and it would seem that other companies recognise this in ensuring they have exclusive games for their platform.

For me everybody has got a running chance. All we have up to now is vapour, and only time will tell which system is the best. I'll buy the platform with the games that suit my tastes best.

Forcing everyone back into the bureaucratic process is exactly what the designers want to do. Imagine how much less money would be made by cell phone companies if you could pick up any phone and it would automatically choose a phone number, then register your name with a decentralized directory so anyone who wanted to reach you could. Instead, you have to pay that $50 activation fee, plus a sizable portion of every month's cell phone bill, just for the privilege of being told when and where you can make telephone calls. That is the ideal that our IPv6 overlords are shooting for. I for one welcome them.

If that is the case then I will welcome anyone breaking IPv6 with a new NAT solution, for this reason. I don't pay for installing an extra phone in my house, so I don't expect to have to do the same with IPv6.
