Add to the mix the PCI-X architecture and you are no longer limited to one graphics card, as you are with AGP. So at this point you could have two or more graphics cards doing audio processing.
So what has the EFF been doing? Nobody in the open source world creates patents, but at least we have the EFF to stand to help us out against these claims. Wasn't the EFF actually helping fight the Eolas patent claim.
Sure Microsoft has more money to throw at the problems, but then again they also spend their time flooding the system with more unnecessary patents, for whatever reason.
Another game that makes use of Torque and has recently been ported to the Mac is Bridge Construction Set from Chronic Logic. They have only just recently started porting their, Torque based, games to the Mac and Linux.
Torque, from Garage Games is great for anyone wanting to start getting into game development, since it is relatively affordable. There is a demo of what the engine can do on the web site.
Try and follow the thread. You don't buy a corporate PC to play games on.
And most corporations don't swap out the innards, other than HD and memory. Actually most people without a technical inclination probably don't either.
The game checks for updates and will provide you the option to download them. That's what it is trying to communicate over the internet. Maybe if Steam told you it was trying to do that it would make you feel better?
development seems to move at a snail's pace, and let's be frank, it's almost the same as it was back in the good ol' unix days.
While I love open source, sometimes the fact that it is done for nothing is one of the things that ensures it is developed slowly. Unless you are a full time student, most people are working a day job to put food on the table. Without the cash motivation it is not always easy to spend the time and effort necessary to make a great project. I am not saying the money is what is important to them, though being comfortable, being able to buy a workstation and not living on the street is.
I don't know how many/.ers actually give a donation to projects that they use a lot, but don't contribute to? Maybe a poll is in need?
In looking around for virtual reality solutions, I came across this Doom 3 virtual reality kit. It is $1450 USD, which is a fair bit, but for any hardcore Doom 3 fan it is probably a must have:)
I would love this product integrated with a head mounted display. Can you imagine looking around in stereo AND your head controls tracking.
Would that not simply be a virtual reality helmet, such as this one? Some other stuff may be found here and here.
Looking around I can't really find any integrated tracker/display headsets, though it is may be because I am not looking in the right places. Expect anywhere from $500 to $3000 and up for these solutions.
Depending on your definition of 'open source' then Java is or is not open source. If your definition of open source is that of the source being available, then the source for the J2SE (Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition) source code is available under the Sun Community Source License.
I keep hearing about this "rest of the world", but I've never seen it. Either it doesn't exist or doesn't matter.
Beyond our land there only be dragons and the end of the world. Those who speak of other place, other ways and a notion of a round globe are heretics. We can only call what we have 'freedom', since there is no other land to compare to our shackled ways.
Despite the fact I can get at least three other channels that I don't have to pay for.
You don't have to pay for it, but they make their money through another revenue stream called advertising. Adverts on European channels are okay at the moment. What I don't like is the North American layout, where you get about 2 minutes of adverts for every 10 minutes of program. Sometimes it feels like the gap is less. Not only that, when they show a film they select the climax points for inserting the adverts - enough to drive anyone crazy. Are you surprised the concentration span is apparently so short in North America (see here)?
Entry level and AOL Office == Open Office?

$299 gives you an entry level PC. Looks like its enough to surf the web with and do most day to day stuff. Surprised by the lack of DVD drive, but maybe they figure that most people are interested in download and burn? Certainly not something for Doom 3, but then again I'm not surprised. You also need to be subscribed to AOL for one year. This really sounds like a similar approach as that used for mobile phones.
Reading the FAQ, I see mention of 'AOL Office Writer', 'AOL Office Calc' and 'AOL Office Impres'. Searching the net reveals nothing on the programs, though the closest I could find were matching names in the Open Office suite. Other than the names I wonder if they are one and the same?
It will be about a bunch of corporate whores who enjoy making life difficult for people who stand in their way. And we'll see how Penguin appreciates this.
Reading the decription of the technology it really sounds like a polarising filter for radio frequencies:
On one side most of the copper is removed, leaving a grid of copper crosses. On the other side, matching crosses, turned through 45 degrees, are etched away - leaving a film of copper with a grid of cross-shaped holes. BAE says that by carefully changing the size of the crosses and their spacing, the sheet can pass precisely defined frequencies, while blocking all others.
Motorola is supposed to be selling an "iTunes compatible" phone by early 2005.
Boy am I happy I bought a CD player that is compatible with HMV, Amazon, and other music stores. And for the extra bonus of only a small quantity having DRM. Ooh, and it also supports non-compressed music, as supplied by the stores.
I stear clear of lock in, where I can. iTunes store, Sony connect et al. will not get my business until they are consumer friendly, which really depends on a mixture of them and the record companies.
I wonder whether 'Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex' provided any influence for this, was simply influenced by it or simply had two groups thinking of the same thing. If you have seen the series you will know what I mean.
iPod supports WAV, MP3, AAC and AIFF. FLAC and OGG would be nice, as would the radio. Though I must admit most other players offer me properiety WMV or ATRAC, insted of AAC with 'Fairplay'. Its one devil or the other.
AAC is to MPEG 4, what MP3 is to MPEG 1 & 2, see my post, just not the Fairplay part.
I'm inclined not to believe what you have to say on the basis that you didn't write ATRAC correctly.
I base my argument on the fact that Sony manages to get twice as many songs onto a player with half as much storage space. Sounds like the is probably a reduction in sound quality by three-quarters. Sure I have to admit that I haven't listened to any to confirm.
Note the above post is based on the presumption that most computers only have one AGP slot.

- MPEG-4 - MPEG 4 specification making reference to AAC
Don't forget that ActiveX while helping this site work, is also the biggest security issue in Internet Explorer.
Does anyone know whether StrongHold actually improves on Apache's security?

Found this link on world wide brain cancer stats. And another one, here , on causes - though like any scientific stuff this is subject to change.

Looks like they don't want you using anything but IE to access their rather shitty site.
We'll have to complain to the French government to get Virgin to open up their website. We can't have this IE onlu monopoloy.
For those of you interested, I will be naming my next book:

Looking at the size of the typical MS OS, I think the impressive part is that both the OS AND the application are capable of fitting in 1GB of space.
Takeing out the GUI related aspects and multimedia aspects helps reduce the system size by a fair bit.
