Microsoft has confirmed rumours that its next Windows release, code-named Longhorn, will be a desktop OS only, and not a synchronized release including both desktop and server versions as originally planned. advertisement
Likewise, the Windows release following Longhorn, code-named Blackcomb, will be server-only. While the company has not announced an official release date for Longhorn, the time table for its release hasn't changed, Microsoft said. This means Longhorn will arrive in 2004 or 2005, depending on which Microsoft official you believe.
"Customer requirements dictate our release strategies and timing for Windows products," a Microsoft spokesperson said.
"Customers have asked that we map our server releases more closely to how they can consume and implement advances and innovations we deliver. Given the deployment cycles and budgeting that customers work through, and given the significant customer interest in our upcoming release of Windows.NET Server 2003, we have determined that another major release of Windows Server in the Longhorn client timeframe does not meet the needs of most of our customers.
âoeAnother major release of Windows Server will follow Windows.NET Server 2003; it is code named Blackcomb. We do not have a firm release date at this time, [but] Microsoft will determine a release timeframe based on what customers tell us they require."
Though details are still unclear, Longhorn will include a new 3D-based user interface with interactive video, a SQL Server-based file system called Windows Future Storage (WinFS), and a MSN 8-like Start Menu addition called the Sidebar.
I remember back in my childhood (that would to early 80's) there was 2 similar devcies.
Some of the Tandy 1000 series has MS-DOS 3.3 placed in a ROM drive.
Shortly after that a company out in Californa test marketed a bootable ISA card that had Windows 3.1 and a small ramdrive. At the local Sears it was billed as being updatable to Windows 4.0 when it came out[Insert laughter here].
The device was unstable because it didn't use Flash memory. The RAM they did use ate power like you wouldn't believe. Thus the battery life was short and you would have to reinstall your personalized setting.

GNU HURD is a slimmer re-write of the UNIX kernel that is completely OOP.

This is Push technology, so you could do any kind of push you do with channels now you can do with this. Here a couple of idea's I had:
Song Titles - How about ID tags so you can actually see the exact title of the song your listening to? You can keep a 10 song list like caller ID. You can see the last few songs you listened to. For advertisers you would keep one text line scrolling on the display.
Second Audio Channel - A secondary program at AM quality on an FM station. Kinda like how HDTV can have up to 6 lower quality channels.
Radio for the Death - Close Captioning of radio lyrics. 'Nuff said.
Emergency Broadcast Technolgy - Give both a readable text warning and GPS cordinates of pending danger.
Exact Station Date and Time - Isn't that what you really want half the time you turn on the radio anyway.
Weather and News Broadcasts - Get the local or national news in an instant.
Automatic Request line # - Never have to listen for those damn # to call while your driving.
Possible interactivity - Broadcast a survey to a cellphone, you log your answers, and then you transmit your results.
How about left channel English, right channel Japanesse.
Close captioning can take care of the subtitling.
Never happen, but it would be fun.
BTW: This is not an original idea. When X-Men the Animated Series(Fox's version, not WB's version) was first shown in Japan the did exactly that. Left channel in Japanesse, right channel in English, and close captioning for translations.
Overall: a massive win for Microsoft, who can restrict the release of its APIs to major commercial companies only.
So what bone do you think they will through us? What I mean is will they give some out-dated API set for IE integration and say that they are going over and above the antitrust agreement or what?

It's a pity that Microsoft's Beth Goza, who we teased here last week, has taken down her weblog. Far from wanting to see it disappear, it ought be preserved in a time capsule.
But not only has Beth's blog gone underground - so has the parody which inspired our story. It's disappeared from no less than five mirror sites.
Even more extraordinary, a witch-hunt is on to find the perpetrator. One member of the PocketPC community says legal action is being threatened against the author, whose identity remains a mystery.
"The phrase 'it will soon be out of our hands' was used by one figure close to Beth," we're told.
It would be remarkable if Microsoft's expensive legal and public relations machinery were deployed in what is essentially a private matter.
And highly unlikely, too, as parodies are protected under the First Amendment.
Microsoft's approach to the press is singularly enlightened, when compared to say an Apple. The company takes barbs in good grace, and doesn't deploy feudal divide and rule tactics. It's never, to our knowledge, sued a journalist. Of course it has its favorite hacks, but in general the philosophy is - they're always going to be mean to us, they'll always be around: meanwhile, we have a message to convey, and stuff to sell.

The king of webloggers Jorn Borger - he was the first to use the term and it's still the best - used to use a quote by Tolstoy in his Usenet sig:- "In human stupidity, when it is not malicious, there is something very touching, even beautiful... There always is." And there is something bewitching about Beth's ruminations such as " just for the record i like it when my foods touch" a line worth of Ralph Wiggum.
No, what's strange is when an attack on one blogger is perceived as an attack on blogging in general. That implies that there can't possibly be a quality threshold in blogdom, and confirms John Dvorak's worst fearsabout groupthink. This is an unnecessarily defensive reaction and quite wrong. If blogs are writing, there's good and bad writing.
Of course, John was being satirical, and he wasn't decrying blogdom: only the mentality that blogging is in of itself revolutionary and no criticism can be voiced, and no quality threshold can be drawn; that we must not differentiate between good and bad, because it's all somehow equally valid.
The parody itself was pretty mean and spiteful. But it's a parody. We hope that groupthink doesn't extinguish parodies, as they help us see that the Emperor has no clothes.

Several international teams of astronomers have joined together to create a "virtual telescope" roughly the size of Earth and the most powerful in the world, researchers have announced.
The new array can detect features 3000 times smaller than the finest detail observed by the Hubble Space Telescope.
The virtual telescope was created earlier this year by linking signals from radio telescopes on several continents. Scientists have subsequently found radio signals from galaxies over three billion light years away.
AP has a story published Oct. 21st about how local station(already has a huge market share) can now broadcast digital radio. Why buy a subscription for a satellite radio signal instead of catching a free local stream?
Another thing, most people listen to the radio for local weather and traffic conditions. Satellite radio doesn't supple that need.

He said it'll mean local radio won't become a second-class communications service. Wharton said digital radio will allow stations to compete on an equal footing with cable and satellite-delivered radio services.
In order to hear digital AM and FM broadcasts, you'll need a special radio. But you'll still be able to hear analog broadcasts on the radios you have now.
Someone posted a Japanese article that the fish translated. The first generation applications will be for displays like PDA, watches, and portable TV's that will utilize a proprietary 8-bit processor. 8-bit is not exactly a processing giant. Lower processor power, lower heat output.
Um, they could be running in clusters.

The Hurd is real software that works Right Now. It is not a research project or a proposal. You don't have to wait at all before you can start using and developing it.
This is Push technology, so you could do any kind of push you do with channels now you can do with this. Here a couple of idea's I had:
Song Titles - How about ID tags so you can actually see the exact title of the song your listening to? You can keep a 10 song list like caller ID. You can see the last few songs you listened to. For advertisers you would keep one text line scrolling on the display.
Second Audio Channel - A secondary program at AM quality on an FM station. Kinda like how HDTV can have up to 6 lower quality channels.
Radio for the Death - Close Captioning of radio lyrics. 'Nuff said.
Emergency Broadcast Technolgy - Give both a readable text warning and GPS cordinates of pending danger.
Exact Station Date and Time - Isn't that what you really want half the time you turn on the radio anyway.
Weather and News Broadcasts - Get the local or national news in an instant.
Automatic Request line # - Never have to listen for those damn # to call while your driving.
Possible interactivity - Broadcast a survey to a cellphone, you log your answers, and then you transmit your results.
Two channels?
How about left channel English, right channel Japanesse.
Close captioning can take care of the subtitling.
Never happen, but it would be fun.
BTW: This is not an original idea. When X-Men the Animated Series(Fox's version, not WB's version) was first shown in Japan the did exactly that. Left channel in Japanesse, right channel in English, and close captioning for translations.
An interface that is completely independant from the underlying OS?

It's a pity that Microsoft's Beth Goza, who we teased here last week, has taken down her weblog. Far from wanting to see it disappear, it ought be preserved in a time capsule.
But not only has Beth's blog gone underground - so has the parody which inspired our story. It's disappeared from no less than five mirror sites.
Even more extraordinary, a witch-hunt is on to find the perpetrator. One member of the PocketPC community says legal action is being threatened against the author, whose identity remains a mystery.
"The phrase 'it will soon be out of our hands' was used by one figure close to Beth," we're told.
It would be remarkable if Microsoft's expensive legal and public relations machinery were deployed in what is essentially a private matter.
And highly unlikely, too, as parodies are protected under the First Amendment.
Microsoft's approach to the press is singularly enlightened, when compared to say an Apple. The company takes barbs in good grace, and doesn't deploy feudal divide and rule tactics. It's never, to our knowledge, sued a journalist. Of course it has its favorite hacks, but in general the philosophy is - they're always going to be mean to us, they'll always be around: meanwhile, we have a message to convey, and stuff to sell.
Evil and elitist?

As I replied to Jonathan at StretchingThoughts.com, it's onlyelitist if you think that blogs are folks' only form of expression.
The king of webloggers Jorn Borger - he was the first to use the term and it's still the best - used to use a quote by Tolstoy in his Usenet sig:- "In human stupidity, when it is not malicious, there is something very touching, even beautiful... There always is." And there is something bewitching about Beth's ruminations such as " just for the record i like it when my foods touch" a line worth of Ralph Wiggum.
No, what's strange is when an attack on one blogger is perceived as an attack on blogging in general. That implies that there can't possibly be a quality threshold in blogdom, and confirms John Dvorak's worst fearsabout groupthink. This is an unnecessarily defensive reaction and quite wrong. If blogs are writing, there's good and bad writing.
Of course, John was being satirical, and he wasn't decrying blogdom: only the mentality that blogging is in of itself revolutionary and no criticism can be voiced, and no quality threshold can be drawn; that we must not differentiate between good and bad, because it's all somehow equally valid.
The parody itself was pretty mean and spiteful. But it's a parody. We hope that groupthink doesn't extinguish parodies, as they help us see that the Emperor has no clothes.

The Blue Gene project, first announced in late 1999, was designed to model the folding of human proteins, allowing researchers to better understand diseases and their cures. At the time, IBM said Blue Gene would be 1,000 times more powerful than "Deep Blue," the computer that beat chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.

Several international teams of astronomers have joined together to create a "virtual telescope" roughly the size of Earth and the most powerful in the world, researchers have announced.
The new array can detect features 3000 times smaller than the finest detail observed by the Hubble Space Telescope.
The virtual telescope was created earlier this year by linking signals from radio telescopes on several continents. Scientists have subsequently found radio signals from galaxies over three billion light years away.
AP has a story published Oct. 21st about how local station(already has a huge market share) can now broadcast digital radio. Why buy a subscription for a satellite radio signal instead of catching a free local stream?
Another thing, most people listen to the radio for local weather and traffic conditions. Satellite radio doesn't supple that need.

Dennis Wharton with the industry trade group, the National Association of Broadcasters, said stations are already buying the equipment needed to transmit these signals.
He said it'll mean local radio won't become a second-class communications service. Wharton said digital radio will allow stations to compete on an equal footing with cable and satellite-delivered radio services.
In order to hear digital AM and FM broadcasts, you'll need a special radio. But you'll still be able to hear analog broadcasts on the radios you have now.
Someone posted a Japanese article that the fish translated. The first generation applications will be for displays like PDA, watches, and portable TV's that will utilize a proprietary 8-bit processor. 8-bit is not exactly a processing giant. Lower processor power, lower heat output.
People who use glass computer shouldn't throw stones.
