  1. Moore factors to Moore's Law on Moore's Law Disputed · · Score: 2

There are more factors to Moore's Law then just how many transistors can be put on piece of silicon. It's also based on how fast:
    * Motherboards are created to use the new higher speed processor
    * RAM bandwidth (compare SIMMs performance to DIMMs)
    * Software that utilizes the newer/more advanced features (8bit vs 16bit vs 32bit vs 64bit)
    * Additional load placed on a processor by a new GUI's look feel (eye candy slows your machine down)
    * Lack of advancement of storage devices (slow drives = slow machine)
    * Lack of advancement of IO ports and devices (My ISA video card isnâ(TM)t as fast as my PCI card)

Processors do get faster. Nevertheless, other factors limit them.

Try this. Compare the startup time of a fresh install of Windows 95c to a fresh install of Windows XP on the same hardware. You will find that the 95 system is much faster then the XP startup because there isn't nearly as much OS baggage slowing it down.

Rael: No DNA test for baby Eve
    http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/01/03/clone.claim s/
Sect leader vows to guard identity of alleged human clone

SHERBROOKE, Quebec (CNN) --A company founded by members of a sect that believes mankind was created by extraterrestrials says what it calls the first human clone will not undergo testing to verify her genetic makeup.

The head of the Raelian movement, who calls himself "Rael," said Thursday that he has told Clonaid's leader not to perform DNA tests on the infant girl, nicknamed "Eve."

Appearing on CNN's "Crossfire," Rael said he had spoken with Clonaid CEO Brigitte Boisselier and told her, "If there is any risk that this baby is taken away from the family, it is better to lose your credibility; don't do the testing."

He added: "I think she agrees with me."

Boisselier, a bishop in the Raelians, has claimed that a second cloned baby is expected to be born in Europe before Sunday, but she declined to name the country.

Clonaid had previously said Eve was to undergo DNA testing this week. Such a test would prove or disprove the company's claim that Eve is a genetic duplicate of her mother. Clonaid did not return calls seeking comment late Thursday.

Rael said he made the decision after a "judge in Florida signed a paper saying that the baby Eve should be taken from the family, from her mother."

However, no Florida judge has made such a ruling. A hearing date has been set in Broward County Circuit Court for January 22 on a lawsuit filed by attorney Bernard Siegel, who wants a legal guardian appointed for the baby girl.

If the child's mother does not appear for the hearing, the court could conceivably order that the baby be taken away. The court could also delay any decision or rule that it doesn't have jurisdiction over the case.

Clonaid, the company founded by members of the Raelian movement, had announced that the baby was born outside the United States on December 26, and said she would be brought to the United States on Monday. However, it is not known if that ever took place.

The baby's whereabouts have not been revealed, nor has the birth been independently confirmed. Clonaid has said Eve was born to a 31-year-old American woman.
    'A rogue organization'

Siegel said Rael's comments seemed to indicate the Raelians think "that they don't have to answer to the law, which says to me that this is a rogue organization."

"I want the whereabouts of this alleged child to be made public," he said.

Noting that there has been no ruling yet, Siegel said, "I guess [Rael is] a better space alien than he is a lawyer. If my lawsuit has in fact called their bluff, then so be it."

Rael, former French journalist Claude Vorilhon, contends human life resulted from extraterrestrial genetic engineering and argues that cloning is the key to eternal life.

Will the public get a chance to see the baby soon?

"I don't think so," Rael said in the "Crossfire" interview.

At another point, he was asked if his group had simply gotten away with a great publicity stunt. Rael, speaking from Canada via satellite, said his earpiece was having technical difficulties.

"I am so sorry, but the sound is so bad. I cannot hear anything," he said.

He also said his Raelian movement is "completely separate" from Clonaid.

  4. The Science of Memories on What's Your Earliest Memory? · · Score: 2

[Warning: I was sick and tired when I wrote this. Some sentence structure and spelling maybe screwed up.]

Everything you experience(sight, smell, sound, taste, touch, internal biological stats, and thoughts) is placed into a biological memory cache. You're not conscience that this memory cache is happening.

Your brain selectively places about 1-10% of the information from your memory into your short term memory. Your body reports so much information in just a second that your mind has to select the information to spend the cycles to commit to any kind of memory. Your body at full awareness(aka Fight or Flight mode) is estimated to report about 17 terrabytes of analog information within a second.

Next your mind selects the information from your short term memory that should be placed into your long term memory. Depending on your concentration and/or emotional levels determains the amount of information that is placed into your long term memory. Higher concentration and/or emotional levels are placed in more detailed into your memory.
Example: Concentrating on homework will let you remember it. Flying through homework will have a lower priority level and will ussually be forgot. Fun times are remembered better then dull times. Running from a guy you shooting at your may place a higher level on the running then remembering that your running.

Finally you build an index by topical association of the new information for your long term memory.
Example: Adding and subtracting are placed indexed under Math. Linux and BSD news would be indexed under the topic of Kewl for most Slashdot readers.

The reason we forget is simple:
    - Something is not thought to be important enough to be placed into your long term memory. Example: A phone number you will only call once in your life.
    - You are improperly indexing your information. Example: You remember a class by how boring it is, not what was actually taught in it.

Most 'Get a Great Memory' programs work by teaching you to relax and let the memories flow and re-index your old memories. Some memory programs work by teaching you ways of indexing or associating new information.

Generally you have to be 2 years olds to remember anything. Up until that age you do not have enough experience to know which information to commit into your long term and then to build a proper index. Basic biologically instilled emotionaly responses to give us the base build a usable mind.

You maybe asking: âoeWhy would you need such a clunky method of communication? Line of site is not practical.â

The answer is very simple: Supercomputers and triangulation.

You see any voice communication has certain pitch and volume amplitude modulations. Pitch and volume amplitude modulations are part language and part human physiology. No matter how you scramble and encode the communication the human voice will always have certain keys that can be easily discerned in a conversation.

An enemy can easily grab and record a radio signal. Then the digitally recorded file can be feed in a Beowulf cluster of cheap computers. That data can within a few minutes can decode your voice and thus get your tactical information.

Another advantage of optical communication is that it is almost untraceable. Anytime you use a radio you sending out a beacon saying, "I'm right here; bomb the snot out of me!" An enemy can use simple triangulation to locate you.

A Laser Phone will be virtually impossible to intercept, track, and decode.

Also throttle your nodes to say 10 mbit. That way one node can't take down your entire network.

If a storm or other activity takes out the antena array you still have the old copper. Keep a switch(physical switch, not hub like switch) so that you could walk over to a pannel a switch your node over to copper in a jiff. If they both fail then go carrier pigeon, CB's, or cellphones.
