You're right. No one should be judged any more worthy than another. On a small scale, my comment reads like pure flamebait... but on a larger scale, I would like to see *my* money accomplish something visibly positive. Contributing to the welfare of people who are likely to generate more welfare-requiring progeny isn't my idea of something positive.
While it does sound a bit more dangerous than mounting microwave lasers on predators, I would imagine they could use a broadband frequency-hopping scheme with a tough multi-channel receiver to foil jamming. I mean, duh... isn't that what most people would do?
Dude... is it me or aren't geeks a little more proven? I mean... if this were to take off, it would have some sort of positive effect (on KDE). Meanwhile, feeding the children of some 3rd world country accomplishes what? Feeds them so they can grow up and have more starving children, right?
At least helping geeks isn't likely to contribute to overpopulation (:
God forbid someone like football AND computers. Oh wait, I use linux therefore I must comply to all of the geek stereotypes. I guess I had better apologize for showering, knowing how to dress myself, not giggling like a retard if a female looks in my direction, and not eating a constant stream of pizza and doritos.
I don't know about the rest of the/. crowd, but I can understand the urge to voice one's distaste with the topic since I myself am normally ostracized and thought of as some weirdo because I don't like football or much of anything in the way of spectator sports... (that and not getting boozed up, going to clubs, giving a shit about things automotive, etc, etc.) I don't know about the rest of you, but it's a sore spot with me and I like to go to slashdot to feel at home... this certainly doesn't achieve that. I'd feel the same about someone posting a link about supercharging their car...
Both these statements don't fully make sense to me:
"Also large areas of this market use either Novell or WinNT. Both are unavailable for Alpha at the moment"
"Windows 2000 can be bought along with most new Alpha systems."
Huh? Okay... first quote: um... obviously you can use NT 4, are you meaning win 2000? As for the second quote, have you bought an alpha with windows 2000 installed? from hp? I was pretty sure alpha support didn't make it past build 2128 (for professional)?
From the Tech TV article: "If it were built according to Babbage's blueprints today, the Analytical Engine would likely work, Bergin says."
Hmmm... according to the The Charles Babbage Institute: "the Analytical Engine was never successfully completed, and ran only a few 'progams' with embarrassingly obvious errors. "
So my question... does anyone has any more info on construction attempts of the analytical engine? The information I found on any construction attempts beyond the difference engine are a bit vague...
No Prices... right on! That is the most frequent and annoying thing I've run into lately. Bullseye on that one.
Here are some things I thought were missing...
How about sound loops that don't stop by hitting the stop button? Or sound period! This is very annoying in an office enviornment where one might forget to turn off the speakers... such a thing can attract unwanted attention! I know that corporate sites don't seem to do this as much as geocities sites and such, but still, I think it worth mentioning.
Also, I think disabling the back button (from the 99 article) is still a nasty design mistake still overused today... it and pop-ups have gotten me into the habit of right-clicking on each link and opening it in its own window, so as not to corrupt any previous browsing, which leads to a slight annoyance of getting Javascript errors when there is some sort of script associated with the link... but I suppose that falls under #6, which by the way, doesn't emphasize enough the loathing that ppl have for pop-ups.
As for #2, I find that some sites don't seem to index their entire site for their search engine. At wizards.com (a particularly bad site in general), for instance, there are pages that I can't find using exact text from a page. I end up going to google to find the pages I'm looking for.
And finally... not having contact info on a site doesn't bother me too much... unless they also have inaccurate or insufficient whois data. I think keeping your whois data up to speed is a growing shortfall with modern discount hosts.
I don't know about the civilian sector, but in the military, it pays to be married. Married members get extra money to support their families, are less likely to be deployed, are less likely to be tasked to work during holidays and get a free ticket out of living in the damn barracks/dorms and eating at the chow hall. And even with the extra money, they still find room to complain about living from paycheck to paycheck, ignoring the fact that they just had to have the latest sports car or SUV (which they need for the family, of course). And even though they're dirt broke, they still manage to have enough for a pack or two a day and plenty of booze for the night. Quite frankly, I'm sick of military members with families griping about money... with sound financial planning, no military member should have a problem, even if you're an E-1.
Am I misled or isn't lack of commercial software for linux the biggest reason ppl don't use linux? Does everyone use WINE or multiple multiple boxes or is there some secret I don't know about?
Am I the only one who thinks that the real war isn't based on architecture, but rather marchitecture? I would venture to guess that the average consumer isn't familiar with the latest benchmarks or speed comparisons. Every non-computer-geek person I know hasn't a clue about differences in architecture or what the clock speed really means. They go for the names they know... and that boils down to "Intel" and "Pentium".
I'm behind AMD all the way, but I think they have a long road ahead of them. People are fickle... when windows crashes, they often blame the unfamiliar CPU or even the computer vendor (given that joe consumer is likely to buy from them). And that's if they even stray from the intel name... many are too scared to even consider it...
>Instead of 60 billion being in the hands of bill >gates and 40 billion in the hands of microsoft. > >This money would be more evenly distributed.
In a communist society, Bill Gates may well have never ascended to his position in life, given the lack of incentive. At least capitalism encourages competitive industry... why would anyone want to work harder for nothing? To help one's fellow man? Yeah right...

I am stuck in a non-tech job in the military and when I mentioned google once, everyone looked at me funny... and at first I thought, "Are you guys stupid...", but after thinking about it... if you don't use the net much... it could pass you by, whereas you really have to have your head stuck in the mud not to have heard of Yahoo, whether you have access to the net or not.
Hear, hear! Every single citizen in America should sign up right this minute. Then we could pass out guns to some 200 million people and send them over there to kill everyone within a 200 mile radius of Bin Laden... and at the same time we could clear out some land mines AND exert some much needed population control on our own country, too. Good thinking! You'd make a good politician!
Am I the only person that can crash w2k? I've been using it for a few months, and that bastard crashes about once an hour... fortunately I'm so busy, it's almost a good thing it crashes... otherwise I wouldn't get anything else done!

Absolutely. We need something harsher... spamming the spammer is hardly enough. Nor is raping the rapist.
What we REALLY need is some Clockwork Orange type justice.
