  1. Re:XBox? on Gaming With An Opponent Who's 'Over There'? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Replace? I don't think it can.

But it can add variety. I mean, talk on the phone with them one day, play a game with them the next day.

Think about what any gamer will do with an old friend they haven't seen in awhile. They'll talk for a bit, then sit down and play *insert current game closest to what you used to play with that friend* with (or against) them (though probably continue chatting while doing it).

It just adds another level of interaction that can be nice when you're already able to talk to them on the phone. I mean, there's only so much catching up and small talk you can do.

I think it's the Disney studios that aren't profitable anymore, since most of the good animated movies out of Disney in the past 5 years or so were from Pixar...

Highly, highly doubtful. It's more that just people who studied aerospace that worked on the probe. For instance, the people who did any code for the probe, assuming it wasn't outsourced, would probably be either Comp Sci, Comp Eng, or Software Eng grads.

Most certainly not "rocket scientists". Frankly, unless they hold enough knowledge to have a degree in both Aerospace and one of the above (actual second degree not necessary), it would be ethically wrong to sign off on mission-critical code that they write. They probably WOULD need the actual second degree before NASA would allow it.

But I will agree with your last statement, it is a cool thing to do.

You might wonder, but after helping several aerospace engineering students (AKA rocket scientists) through their ONE Java course, I certainly don't.

Remember, it's rocket science, not programming! I, for one, can tell the difference between source code and rocket fuel. Past that, I don't know much about rocket fuel. On that note, I doubt most rocket scientists know much about programming.

The Canadian government subsidizes broadband, making it less expensive
Partially right, ONLY partially right, and a very, very misleading statement.

The Canadian government started an initiative to make sure that all households in Canada *could* have high speed internet access "by 2004" (this isn't even close to actually happening, from what I've seen).

It was SUGGESTED that the Canadian Government foot the bill, back in 2002. It seems to have gone to the provincial level since then, and there IS being money given to build infrastructure. For example, $55M over 3 years in Ontario, only for northern and rural communities. Yeah, that's HEAVY funding there...

This essentially brings the cost of subscribing to broadband in a small community in line with metro centres where the infrastructure already exists.

This means that if you live in even a remotely sizeable city (100K+ population), you'll never see this affect the cost of broadband access. Probably not even anywhere with 10K+ population, if it's not too far from a larger city.

And if you do live somewhere that it will affect the cost in, it'll only affect installation cost.

The Canadian Government does not and never has subsidized the operating costs involved with broadband internet. Same goes for all provincial governments, to my knowledge.

Now, the first batch of IPod batteries to fail went after 18 months of "heavy use". Let's call that... 5 hours a day. At least.

4 hours a day, for a year and a half... 2737.5 hours of use.

That translates into $102.66 US, plus applicable taxes.

It may not be out of the question for someplace like EB to reduce their in-store stock to a minimum and have a "Find more games at www.ebgames.com!" sign above the shelves.
