Er, stop me if I am wrong but after reading carefully the article, it appears that the proponents of this new wave are software virus companies. So my question is : "if there is no more danger for virus on the corporate systems by blocking people from download on the fast pipes, will these same virus companies be able to survive just by selling to individuals on their after hours home systems? Aren't they realizing that they are killing their golden goose?"

If your company starts adopting this policy, then it's one good reason for you to start working from 9am till 5pm every day. I don't think that they would prefer that to your current 14 hours that you regularely put on the job, even if your pcshows the slashdot web page every once in a while.

The video game press in Japan doesn't say good things neither about XBox. All you hear about is Sony new network and Game Cube awesome new titles.

  5. QoS on More On Policing Shareware · · Score: 2

Shareware can exists but the secret recipe is Quality of Service. I've got some shareware I have been using and buying from time to time. If I feel that the product is neat, but misses something I want, contact the author and then get an answer in a timely fashion with either explanation or some comments, then my next move is to buy the software. The last time I did that it was on Sunday at 8pm and the guy replied to me half an hour after I hit SEND.
On the other hand, I found most of the time that the people behind the shareware I was using just unreliable. The kind of programmers who worked on some quick home project and didn't feel like finishing it, but still expect a ROI. It is this kind of people who are putting a bad image on the word "shareware". So, the end of the story is I guess, no pain, no gain.

Beside the install usually goes smoothly without me sitting in front of the machine (I start it before calling a friend and chatting for 3 hours.) The longest part is to download the iso images so what it is I would gain if it installed in half the time if the files are up to 20 hours to download?

  8. Flexibility over Practicality on New, Flexible CDs Arrive · · Score: 5, Interesting

Being flexible presents some advantage in the ad business as it becomes possible to send CD like junk mail. I (don't really) look forward to the days of getting Pre-approved credit card mail on this media. However, the format becomes quickly an inconvienience when you decide to keep and use the media. As an example, I remember when the DVD expert group was debating over as to protect the disc in the casing or not (like the Panasonic PD disk.) They decided not to, to the biggest regret of companies like Blockbuster who are irritating their customers by renting DVD with scratches and digs all over (I've got one of these DVDs with a cigarette burn in it!)

I really like the tape format, and I enjoy the mini disc (MD) style, allowing me to throw medium on the desk without caring if it will get scratched. The MD format is almost perfect for me. It's smaller than CDs and fit in backpacks. It's too bad that it hasn't become more popular with increase storage and broader adoption by computer manufacturers.

You can't copyrigth an English word, but it seems that their armies of lawyers have come around this problem. Same for Explorer, Word, and a few others.

What makes their claim valid is that they always prepend the MS trademark in front of the other words. However, lately I have seen documents from the Beast where the simple Word followed by TM was just mentioned. I did a double jump when I saw that, because this is the end of the English language as we know it if they can argue about this in court.

nuf said. Cowboy beebop cries for a movie Hollywood style. It's all americanized in there, and they can even put as much special effects as they usually like to do. Songs are great and the character names can be pronounced by all the average Joe Sixpack of the States who go to the movie on Sunday and usually are the people responsible for a box office movie success or not. There is enough material in there to cover much ground, as the movie following the episodes took after the hero died without having to reinvent a BS story of a twin brother or resurrection. Totally cool and awesome. So Hollywood, time to open your wallets and do the right thing. And call me if you need an actress, okay?

First you need another OS to do the conversion with their crappy app (Jukebox if I remember correctly), next you can't transfer more than once and in one direction.

    - Memory Stick: Ok: Sony still doesn't get it. The most expensive format per MB. I still refuse to go this route. What is the point of adopting this format over other proven and more economic ones?

... unfortunately it reflects what most people are going to think about the whole darn thing.

I've subscribed to the linuxppc list (debian) and have read from time to time, a post saying more or less: "thanks and so long for the fish. I am moving to OS X."

That usually comes from people who have installed Linux to look cool and brag about it ("Hey dude! I run Linux"). So it's not a real waste to have these people moving to OS X. These guys are the ones bitching about Linux without even moving the little finger and contribute to anything: "Sound doesn't work on my iBook. whathehell?!?" I mean, one doesn't have to be an expert to even write an HTML describing some experience and post it. But these people, just nothing, nada. Only bitching.

So it's not surprising that they are moving to OS X. After all, you get support and SJ is in charge of the UI, so nothing can be wrong. Of course, some of them come back and ask on the same linux list, where is the openoffice for OS X !!! Because as soon as they made the move to OS X, well, they realize the meaning of the word "Free" (not the meaning that Stallman would like you to understand though.) I am talking about what you get for your money. On OS X, iTune and iPhoto, and maybe AppleWorks depending of your inclinaison to deal with shitty software.

For me, it works a little bit differently. Now I am on OS X, using IE (yuk!) and surfing the web. iBook goes to sleep and wake, then Airport is useless. I need to force quit IE. What do I do? Call M$? No, because they probably won't care. I use Mail.app and bitch at the moronic design of this email. Who do I complain to? To SJ? No, he designed the whole stupid app.

I go to Linux, problem with Evolution. Go to IRC and chat with people. Problem resolved in 2 minutes watch in hand. Conclusion: Apple support sucks! Apple community=zero. Where is eWorld when you need it? Linux on the support side just rock. But you got to RTFM and use your brains. Something certainely that many people won't like to do.
