During my intern job this summer, I am using a Linux PPC for checking my mail and run my "admin" apps (oo 1.0+MozillaRC, yeah!) Of course, while my co-workers are spending way to much time dealing and worrying with virus infections on their machines, I can safely upload any message without fearing a dreaded attack. I don't even have to run an antivirus program. It pays to be a minority.

  2. Re:When will Mandrake upgrade their kernel? on Linux Kernel 2.5.19 Released · · Score: 3, Interesting

This is open source, and if you are willing to download the kernel, compile it, and run it, it's up to you really and not to blame on any distro update engine. The steps are fairly easy to do if you follow readmes but keep in mind that is an unstable release and if things go wrong, you are on your own (keep a backup of the stable kernel and make sure lilo/grub points to the old one too.)

On the other hand, if you are not able to come up with this suggestion on your own, it's probably safe to assume that you should stay away from installing it until it moves to something known to work without any problems (after all, unstable code always moves to stable at one time or another.)

Oh boy, I still didn't make time to watch AOTC.

I run JDK from blackdown and openoffice 1.0, as well as latest Mozilla, IRC, and got to admit that the system feels very responsive and extremelly feature rich. Hell, I can even use videolan with regionfree plugins. The 2.4 glitches for power saving features I experienced in the past seem to be gone too. Thumbs up for all the people who helped make this happen.

Is this part of the economic factor? After all, if your system was lasting forever, companies would have some problem justifying their investor that they can sell you stuff only once.

I bought a PowerPC laptop back in 1995 and I could beat on the keyboard, not use a bag to carry to class, sit on it, almost anything it would take. Last year, I got a TiBook: first week, the return key broke, the next day, I hold the machine, the battery felt off the machine (while working), the screen had 5 bad pixels when I got it and the sticker feet on the bottom left the machine one at a time (without mentioning keys that scratch the screen, heat that burned my laps and locking system that doesn't work anymore.) Overall, a beautiful machine when you see it in an ad. But not built too last.

A friend of mine has still an HP-41C in perfect working condition (made 20 years ago.)

  6. Ergo stuff == cash cow? on How Effective are Ergonomic Keyboards? · · Score: 2

I went to a class given by our university about ergonomics. The people there seem to encourage students to stay away from the kinesis and microsoft/logitech models of this world. The best keyboards they said where the split keyboard model made by gold touch (a respectable company who has been in business for long time but with a ad budget lower than MS and the others) and the now defunct Apple ADB model which was a direct reap off of the gold touch model.
Living on Apple reputation to design always cool stuff, it's a shame that they stopped making that keyboard.

The position of the forearm seems to dictate according to the instructor the problem related ot wristh pain. He also mentionned that the laptop keyboards are worse than desktop keyboard because they will let you palm rest at the same level than the keyboard. Not to mention the most of the time smaller form factor associated with laptop keyboards.

Since I went to that class, and because I love the laptop form factor (me japanese), I keep my hand elevated while typing which gives my gesture an elegant touch. Not that I had pain before but like in many other activities, prevention is better than being sorry.

My main interest is playing movies on the wall of my living room.

This project looks nice if I can find someone to do it for me that is.

I have a few concerns though.
    1) Aren't dvd players using Macrovision to forbid a signal to be output on anything else than a TV? The signal going to a video capture card seems to be a slight problem. Is this a reason why every one in the article is talking about LD and VCD, these two older media not suffering of the Macrovision "virus", er copy protection.
    2) Is this really cheap? I mean a dedicated P800 in the living room (cpu speed to cope with descaler complex algorithm)+capture card+LCD panel, etc... I don't even mention the electric bill.
    3) Noise level: Getting a Pentium noisy as an air carrier next to a TV and adding the noise of the fan(s) for cooling down the bulb(s), does that meant that I will need to listen to the movie with a pair a noise cancelling headphones?
    4) Space: I imagine that the distance from the projector to the screen needs to be consequent. I can't find data regarding the minimum size of a room to use the projector.

I still like the idea though.

I found the first script of Star wars once at a film bookstore in SF and decided to buy the copy just as to document myself about script writing. I was amazed as how much content from the Hidden Fortress from Kurosawa the script contained. Luke was a farmer, the princess was carrying stolen treasures, etc... In short the Kurosawa's story had been rewritten for a Science fiction epic. I realized that the storyline had been stollen from one of the most creative movie makers of all time and adapted to the western world. In short I was discusted by the whole SW phenomenom. Like Picasso, use to say: To be an artist: steal, don't copy.

Trully, if Lucas was playing in one of its own movies, he would be acting as someone from the dark force. This guy has shown only greed and bad taste for the past 20 years (the movies he made and came close to direct himself where mere failures if it wasn't for the SW brand name that was attached to them.)

How can you spend money on stuff that makes this thief even more rich is out of my understanding.

Actually I always had trouble with Sony noise level for fans. The VAIO R505 I bought had this intolerable variable fan that made it even worse (constant noise is way better to cover with a pair of cancelling noise earphones.)

That could also mean that Sony would be able to come with a System on a card for PCs. I would definitely buy a PS2 PCI/AGP card to play on my PC. My monitor and sound system in my office are way better than my TV/Stereo in my living room.

If Apple is on the blue tooth train, then it means that the standard will be back from the dead when M$ put it by not supporting it in XP, and will become successfull (see USB for some background.) Apple is obviously working on new desktop and laptop systems with bluetooth integrated. It's not rumors but very certain that BT is what Apple need for their digital hub strategy. I wonder how they are going to cop with interference between BT and 802.11b. And it will be really funny to see how other vendors are playing catch up with Apple when they realize that bluetooth is a really neat solution to connect devices. In M$ interest not to connect easily with Palm, this is the only reason why the beast of Redmond killed the technology by not releasing drivers last summer. However, all the devices like PDAs (ex: iPaq, Loox, etc...) are released in Japan with BlueTooth in standard. Again, US is lagging big time behind Japan when it comes to wireless (3G, and now BlueTooth.)
