  2. Re:Viruses do this quite nicely. on MIT Team Creates Cancer Stem Cells · · Score: 1

HPV can cause cancer over a very long time and it's not definite that anything will even develop. With the kind of gene transfer they use to make these cancer stem cells you would almost instantly have cancer where ever the virus dropped it's payload. The field of gene therapy (transfer) is still young but sooner or later they will be very good at targeting specific areas or cells in the body. They may also have better transfection rates and even better cancer inducing genes. This leads to possibilities that something like Ebola could never give. I'm not sure I have a nefarious enough mind to figure out why targeted cancer might be useful over outright death by something like Ebola but I'm sure there is someone out there who could.

Scratch that, I just thought of one. If you wanted someone dead and wanted it to look natural then you would never use Ebola. That would scream foul play. On the other hand, giving them a huge, inoperable brain tumor wouldn't look very suspicious. The only way to tell anything was done would be postmortem and even then it would have to be a very intensive investigation to find the inserted genes. And that's assuming they can't make the genes look like the natural mutations that bring about cancer normally. All this stuff is really far away from reality and in no way should it be used to put down the current science which should prove to be very useful in the study of cancer.

Not really, you would need the cells to be immunologically compatible to each person you wanted to infect. That would be harder than a large number of other ways to hurt them. On the other hand, a biological weapon could come from the method they use to turn the cells into cancer stem cells. This generally involves a gene transfer using a virus vector. That kind of virus could be used to create these types of cells inside someone. I don't think large scale virus vector weapons are currently feasible but it may be something to worry about in the future.

The genes Neuregulin-1, Disbindin, COMT, and last but not least DISC (which stands for disrupted in schizophrenia) have all been used in transgenic mice as model of schizophrenia. My lab personally uses 2 of these and collaborates with groups that have the others. That's not to say that this new strain of mouse isn't useful. The general consensus regarding schizophrenia is that quite a few genes are at work as well as environmental factors, so adding another mouse model to the effort always helps.

Just because the thing has a calculator, memo recorder, and calendar in a menu option doesn't make it more expensive or kill the battery life. 8. Re:Suspicious at best. on Nicotine Is the New Wonder Drug · · Score: 1

I'm going to write this regarding the effects of nicotine on the brain because that is my area of research. Effects on peripheral systems may be different.

The problem with simply using nicotine as the beneficial drug is that there are both positive and negative effects of nicotine on the brain. It is believed that the effects are based on the activation of a vast array of nicotinic ACh receptors. For instance, many of the positive cognitive effects of nicotine have been linked with the alpha-7 and alpha-4 beta-2 receptor types. Therefore, many of the drugs currently being studied target those receptors individually. Some of the receptor subtypes are linked with negative effects, so any of these synthetic drugs that are specific to the beneficial receptors types are going to be used with priority over nicotine. This also ties in with creating drugs for treating nicotine addiction, which is a huge field of research at the moment that I am pretty sure big tobacco doesn't want anything to do with.

  9. Re:Suspicious at best. on Nicotine Is the New Wonder Drug · · Score: 5, Informative

You should really know more about a subject before you go on spouting things like "You can be sure the tobacco industry is funding this research." A large portion of this funding is coming from the NIH and one of the main areas of study is smoking cessation. That most certainly does not benefit the tobacco companies. In addition, none of these studies would suggest a cigarette, dip or chew as the route of administration so once again no benefit. If anything, the pharm companies stand to gain while the tobacco companies stand to lose because the drugs in question are all synthetic nicotine like substances that are patented and solely under big pharma control.

I was an engineering major in undergrad so the majority of my basic science classes were covered that year (e.g. Chem, Physics, Calc 1 and 2). I am currently applying to medical school and that is where the problem begins. Because my grades were not spectacular that year, my science GPA as calculated by the medical school application process, is quite low even though I had a 3.5 or better for the rest of my time at college. Nothing counts a science GPA for med school except those core classes. It is not necessarily an admissions officer that is black balling me but rather a specific cutoff number that is probably evaluated by a computer system. Therefore, no one would even see my other years unless I met the minimum requirements from those freshman grades.

I had surgery over the summer and did very well for the next 3 years. My school did not let me repeat those first year classes and I have been suffering ever since from one bad year. Without knowing your specific grades I can't say much else but for example if you have less than a 3.0/4.0 GPA and that extra year will bring you above a 3.0 then I don't think you should even consider any alternatives.

They are not entitled to have it simply because I was volunteering my time, the volunteering was simply the time put into it until then. The price to take it over from me is whatever price I set, especially if they come to me asking for an offer.

Secondly, there are plenty of cases where a simple website has gone from being pretty much worthless to a business with income. Just because you think a myspace page can not make the same transition does not make it fact.

The bottom line is this guy spend years working with them and gaining a huge following for the campaign. They asked him for a price so they must have felt like he had earned something. It was very nasty to turn around and start badmouthing him for asking more then they were willing to pay. The decent thing to do for someone, even if they haven't spent years furthering your cause, is to make a counter offer that you believe is fitting.
