This one isn't a label, but I laugh every time I hear it.
We all know those long TV commercials for pharmaceutical drugs that are constantly on and how they rattle on for about 30 seconds the side-effects and whatnot. My absolute favorite one is for a product called Lunesta. (sp?) It is some sort of sleeping aid in pill form. (sleeping pills) Anyway, one of the side-effects they rattle off is... get this... MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS. A sleeping pill might make me drowsy? Go figure!
Ya know... maybe this is a label! I am guessing these side-effects must be on the bottle too, right?:-) I guess this may qualify after all! heh
Ah yes... the Sears model of the VCS.:-) I actually still own a working one! (You can bow before me too! lol) It also came with a different game... Air Sea Battle! It was better than Combat that came with the standard VCS console.;-)
I remember that game well! I even played the board-game. (In the board-game, you used to put together the maps with these giant puzzle pieces with corridors and corners and whatnot. Cardboard pieces represented marines or blips of the aliens. When the blip was within sight of a marine, it would then change into however many aliens the blip represented.) Both were excellent. I also agree that the sequel to the video game was crappy.
Anyway, that game would be a great one to remake. Space Hulk was based on the Alien franchise, anyway... specifically Aliens with the Colonial Marines, hoards of Aliens, motion tracking blips and all that jazz. Great game... I doubt it will ever be remade, but I would sure love it if it was.:-)
What about other giant beasts that did exist along with men but are now extinct? I understand that a breed of mammoth was larger than modern elephants. Couldn't that be one of these biblical creatures, possibly? At least all sides can agree that they lived alongside men according to history and science. Just a thought.
"there is not one bit of evidence that the CIA has ever imported cocaine. It's an urban legend that got started around the time of the Oliver North scandal."
That depends on who you believe. You can also look further back to the Vietnam era when the CIA, under the "Air America" (the airline, not the bankrupt radio station) banner, participated in the drug trade of heroin. You can read about in a 1972 study called, "The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia" by historian Alfred W. McCoy. There are people that argue against his study, so it all comes down to who you believe. It's not easy to get hard evidence on the CIA, so if you are seeking only hard evidence, I doubt there is much the CIA will ever been found guilty of doing.;-)
I agree, it was a miracle. My mom actually knew the guy who programmed the game.
Here is a silly bit of trivia about the game that he told me once... the parts that E.T. collects to make his "phone" are actually his initials. (They are all warped and wavy.) Also, there is some way to make the flower turn into a Yar and fly away when E.T. resurects it, but I never knew how to do that. For all I know, I was told that to just drive me crazy. lol Gotta love silly Easter Eggs even in old 2600 games.:)
Now THIS is a list. I agree with every single thing on here, with the exception of Civ3... but that is only because I haven't played Civ3.;-) Civ2 is the game I know and love, but I will have to check out 3 now to see if it truly is that much better.:-)
By the way, I remember the first time I scooped an escape pod and it showed as "slaves" in the cargo bay, I nearly fainted. lol I couldn't believe they included that in the game. That was a riot! Well... of to the nearest Coriolis Space Station to dock and sell my cargo.;-) *humming the docking computer music* (Blue Danube, btw.);-)
OMG! How could I have forgotten Pirates!? That is easily one of the best games I have ever played. I'm shocked it didn't make it on the list and didn't even get mentioned on the board until now!
The new incarnation of Pirates that came out in 2004 (Pirates: Live The Life) is pretty damned good, I should mention. Scoop it up! It holds the original flavor with a few new bells and whistles.:-) Sid Meier is my god! lol;-)
I strongly agree. Not to mention other classic IF games like Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Leather Godesses of Phobos or Planetfall. Zork is the one that everyone KNOWS, though... and it was the first from Infocom, so it definitely should be on there. Gamers, don't ignore text adventures!!!
Wow! That is the first text adventure (aka Interactive Fiction) game I have seen anyone mention on this list. This, along with classics like Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and A Mind Forever Voyaging are sadly overlooked by many gamers that can't enjoy a game that is only text input and output. Try it, you might like it!;-)
Agreed. Civ2 is the one that is still loaded on my PC.;-) A true classic. Oh, I also have Alpha Centauri still loaded, of course. Classics all the way!:-)
I actually have this silly bit of trivia in my head... I can swear I remember that the dot from Adventure was actually called the Transmolecular Dot. lol Don't ask me how I remember that or know that, but it sticks in my head hard, so I think it might be truth. Anyone else know?:-)
There is also Elite: The New Kind floating around on the Internet that is a version of the classic Elite that runs perfectly on a WinXP computer. I think the project was squashed by one of the creators, but if you poke around, you can find it.:-) It is basically Elite Plus, from what I can tell. Great version of the classic!
sockpuppet marriage. How cute.
"Give me a SUPER number crunch."
"We have a 32.33, repeating, of course, percent chance of survival."
"That's better than we usually do."
I need 1337 skillz to take out those n00bs! It will be a shame if they eliminate CounterStrike 101 from our children's curriculum. :(
To be picky for a moment...
The topic keeps talking about this "law", but it isn't a law until it is a law. It's a BILL and nothing more, at the moment.
This one isn't a label, but I laugh every time I hear it.

It's called a Commodore 64. ;-)
Turn it on and it is ready to go instantly. heh

Yay! John Stewart to the rescue! I will now sit back and enjoy my moment of zen. :)

LOL! The scary thing is that I figured out what this was from before even getting to the bottom of the list. Wow, I'm a geek sometimes! lol :-)
Specifically... Thief Gold. That game was truly gold.
OMG! How could I have forgotten Pirates!? That is easily one of the best games I have ever played. I'm shocked it didn't make it on the list and didn't even get mentioned on the board until now!

Dan, your list is gold. This is probably the best list I have seen yet of top influencial games. That about covers it!
Agreed! Gotta love those little dinosaurs! Bubble Bobble is the best platformer ever, in my book.

Ah! Someone mentioned Thief! That is easily one of the best games I ever played. A true classic that too often is overlooked, IMHO.

I think that might be the torrent that I got it from. Grab it up! You won't regret it! :)
