I LOOOOOOOOOVED The Longest Journey. (One of my favorite adventure titles ever!) It also made me cry, so I agree with you 100% on that one. :) I was looking forward to getting Dreamfall... now you have me worried from your comment. Do you have reasons for not liking it? I know myself and I will likely buy it no matter what, though. ha!

As a silly side note... there was a "game" I had on my Palm that was called Little Palm Pet or something to that effect. This silly Tomagachi-like game made me cry when your little pet dies. They even have a little graveyard where you see headstones and the picture of your little deceased pet. Wow... maybe I was extra emotional at the time, but that made me cry like crazy. lol I ended up deleting the game from my Palm because I thought it was viciously sad. How the heck is that fun?!!

Ha! Agreed totally. I cry too easily, probably... I read the title of this thread and was like... "Crying at a video game? Sure... all the time!" lol

The first memory I have have of crying at a game when I was a kid and I played a game called Bird Mother on the Commodore 64. (I was just telling my boyfriend this story last week.) You played a mama bird and you had to keep your eggs safe. The eggs hatch and you have to get food for the babies. The babies begin to leave the nest and learn to fly and you have to nudge them up to help them fly or they hit the ground. A farmer has it in for you and the baby birds. All in all, I would cry when a baby bird would die, when the mama bird would die or even when the babies all left the next. Empty nest syndrome! lol I'm just too damned emotional! :) heh (By the way, my boyfriend goofed on me after I told him that story... that bastard! lol)

  9. Saturn pricing did them in on The Rise and Fall of Sega · · Score: 5, Interesting

I believe that the Saturn was their downfall. The console was excellent and quite powerful. What they failed to do was market it properly. They charged $399 for it and felt that was justified because you also got three games with it. Sony saw an opening and sold their console for much cheaper and people gobbled them up. The Saturn may have been a better system, but it wasn't marketed the right way. The other thing the Saturn suffered from was that it was complicated to port games to it because of the hardware used. Sure, it made it superior in rendering and all that, but it also made it unfriendly to those third party guys writing for it. The Playstation was easier to deal with.

In the end, Sony took a foothold that eventually crushed Sega. The Sony name became so big in the console world that years later, then the Dreamcast arrived a full year before the PS2, many gamers said, "We'll wait for the PS2." Wow! That shows you how hard Sony got a foothold. And we all know the rest...

Personally, I am sad that Sega isn't in the console wars anymore. I still think they were the best. I still have my Dreamcast and Saturn. :) Heck, I still have my Genesis!

I'm amazed that there seems to be a generation that seem to think that capitalism is equivalent, or even in some way superior to democracy.

This line makes it seem like you are saying that capitalism and democracy belong in the same category. Fail not to forget that democracy is a form of government and capitalism is a type of economy. Apples and oranges.

  24. Those were the days... on Loyalists Preserve Past Through Text-Only Games · · Score: 1

I remember as a kid playing these text adventure games from Infocom or Scott Adams (no, not the Dilbert guy) and being in heaven. Yes, they drove us nuts, but they were definitely fantastic. :)

You see a machine marked "T Remover" with a door and a red button.

    >open door and put tray inside

You open the door to the T Remover machine and insert the tray.

    >press button

The machine whirs and pops. The door opens and little Ray whatshisname from 3rd grade pops out, picks up his marbles and scuttles off.

Ok, that may be a bit of an obscure joke, but I am sure some hardcore text adventure gamers know what I'm talking about. ;)

  25. Palms Should Be More Crash Resistant? Huh? on Palm's Mistakes · · Score: 1

"they didn't replace Palm OS with something capable and a bit more crash resistent."

Huh? From my experience, the Palm is terribly stable! I have barely seen a Palm crash and die. In all of my years of using Palm devices, I think I have only had maybe three crashes ever. How many crashes do you expect from a Windows based device? ;-)

I still maintain that the Palm OS was phenominal at what it was designed to do. It was very basic and very "zen." It did the job and did it with ease. I even got my boyfriend to understand how to use one... now he uses it constantly! He barely knows how to use the VCR! ;-) heh Palm may not be for everyone, but I found it to be the perfect device for my needs. PPCs are often just a bit too bloated (i.e. Microsoft), but I do see why some people need them.

By the way, I also have a Blackberry for my job and I can see how it is popular, but it needs some heavy improvements, IMHO. I can't wait to see it replaced by the next great thing.

My Palm is still my favorite gadget; I use it constantly and I know that I use it above and beyond what the average Palm user uses it for. (Heck, I even help moderate on a Palm/PDA message board for the past few years!) I just had to voice up because I was stunned to see that someone felt that the Palm OS wasn't stable enough. :-O It is maybe the most stable OS I have ever dealt with!
