This reminds me of when the FBI visited my grandfather because he had the same name as some mafia guy who happened to live nearby. I remember him having to sign paperwork swearing he wasn't the same guy as the criminal. lol Crazy stuff! This was in the late 80s, btw.
I believe that doing anything like this would be only for emergency evacuations without a proper craft. I can't see this being a standard way of coming back to earth.
I would also play Spy Hunter with the 2 game controllers plugged in. One on the floor so I could change weapon selection with my feet and the other in my hands for controlling the car and firing. Like I said, sad.
Don't feel bad... I played the same way on my C64. I bet lots of kids did that back then.
btw... I'm also from Central NJ and I learned Apple BASIC and Pascal in school, as well. (Graduated HS in '88) No COBOL for me, though. By the time I had computer classes in school, I had a Vic-20 at home, so I walked in basically knowing BASIC already. Helped having a grandmother that treated me to a computer when I was around 11. heh She also got me my C64. Thank you, Nana! I miss you!
Just as a note of correction... Mars is about 35 million miles away at its closest point... which is pretty much now. It will go as far as 250 million miles away, though. When they do launches to Mars, they want it to be at its closest point, for obvious reasons.
I turned off the Aero theme... I was happy with the Classic theme, since it was familiar and didn't chew up too many resources with just "looking pretty." Oh... and it didn't even look pretty, if you ask me. The difference with XP "Fisher-Price" and the Windows 8 UI, is that you can't change the Windows 8 one... which is pretty much the point of CowboyNeal's post.
Does anyone know of a story where a man is depressed and finally decides to kill himself and then he learns that he is actually a member of an alien race, where constant suffering is the norm and they "jack-in" (The original Matrix!) to experience life as a human on Earth, which is a relief from their torment, but they are only allowed one human lifetime... and they don't remember their alien existence until their human life has expired? The man who killed himself as a human then remembers who he really is and what he just lost and is tormented because of it. Talk about regret! I might be getting parts of this wrong, but I remember this one being hugely depressing when I read it once upon. Anyone know the title?
Complete agreement. First story that popped into my mind when I saw the title. I was surprised it took this far in the thread for someone to mention it. Brutal... brutal story.
It should also get an award for being an evil and depressing video game.
I had one too. Great explanation there on the reason for why the 1541 was so dog slow! If I had mod points today, I'd toss ya one.:-)

The power supplies were kinda infamous for dying... I had a couple die on me. I remember even sending away for a 3rd party model that was superior. Still have it to this day and it still works fine.;-)
Fun trivia bit about Raid on Bungeling Bay: When Will Wright was making that game, he discovered that he was having so much fun creating the little islands and factories and all that jazz, that he decided to make a game where you built stuff like that... we can all thank Raid on Bungeling Bay for SimCity.:-)
Yes!:-D All great games... although, I actually played those on the C64. heh But I have to admit that the superior M.U.L.E. experience was on the Atari 800 because you could play with 4 players.:-D

So... To flip this... does that mean if I smile when doing something naughty, I won't be recognized by the serious computers?
That one literally got me laughing out loud at work. lol I would toss you a point if I had one. :-D Thanks for the laugh.

Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" deserves to be up there... and I mean the book ending... not the hopeful movie ending.
I'd also add "The Lathe of Heaven" by Ursula LeGuin.

Nah... Elite should be at the top of everyone's lists. ;-)
We had Angry Birds back in the 80s... it was just called "Artillery" back then. ;-)
LOL! I've never played WoW, but I guess some things never change. heh ;-)
LOL! The old chainmail bikini thing from the 80's D&D era?
I'm a female gamer and I always laughed at that stuff.
Let's roll to determine your career path. Roll a d20!
Crucify them all!
Never heard of this! Wow! I wish I had a mod point to toss you. :-)
True... true... but it was definitely better with 4 joysticks. :-)
And don't fold the floppies into paper airplanes, either! ;-)

Toast to evenings once upon with that soft green monochrome glow... and me dying of dysentery.
At least someone learned something from it. lol Even if my joke wasn't that funny. :-)
