As soon as I began working from home I built myself a desk that is at chest height. Literally the top of my desk is just under my armpits.

I have found that standing at my desk all day eleminates all the hunching over problems. I can rest my arms on the desk, I can bounce my legs and move around all day as I am working. Compared to bouncing my legs endlessly while sitting.

Of course my friends initially made fun of me, saying "Dude that is way high, what did you do? Screw up when measuring before building it?" I said it just seemed natural to want to stand, perhaps from working in server rooms early in my career.

After a bit of searching I found I was not alone, including Donald Rumsfeld, Sir Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Virginia Woolf, and even Thomas Jefferson

    10 reasons to use a stand-up desk.

I'll never go back to sitting all day.

  4. Locked in to OSS? on The CVS Cop-Out · · Score: 0, Flamebait

There are comments bandied around these parts about being "locked into MS" if you use their software.

Reading your comments above, it sounds like by going with OSS you are locking yourself into needing your OWN development department if you want to rely on the software, have bug fixes implemented and want any general help/feedback with a OSS product you using. Is that really the attitude you want to portray? Why do that when you can just pay the license fee.

Note: I develop for MS software, I have no moral problems with MS, and generally enjoy the experience. But that doesn't really affect my question. As I have worked on OSS projects and have a great deal of admiration for the developers of those projects.

I am just intrigued by your response, because it sure seems like a selling point AGAINST OSS.

"Logging of communications" also means you have no privacy. And if you think your boss isn't tracking you by your IM status you're kidding yourself.

I'm a hard worker, I have no problem with my "boss" aka:"customers" knowing that I put in long hours. I use the tracking ability myself to monitor my customer contacts and coworkers; their availability and work habits. This comes in handy when you have clients and coworkers living in different timezones and with varying work schedules. If you work hard, what do you have to hide? :)

All those little annoyances? That is support or just part of getting the job done. If I am busy, I will tell somebody that or use that fancy "Away" indicator in most/all IM clients. The easier I make it for customers and coworkers to communicate with me, the better we can ALL get our job done.

My customers use IM. My coworkers use IM. I use IM.

IM is potentially the most influential communication medium since email.
I have had quite a few of my customers tell me that "The simple fact that I can reach you via IM, has made your company's service better than any other partner."

IM is "instant", offers logging of communications and doesn't require somebody to check their email (it pops up on their screen). In many ways it is a better communication tool than other options: phone, email or fax. You can even use it to see if somebody is in the office yet, or out to lunch. I could go on and on...

Feel free to not use it; the rest of the modern business world won't be joining you.

My customers are my partners. The better they do as a result of my work for them, the better I do. The free market is treating me very well. My customers have proven quite grateful to good work done right.

Man.. If they do all that, then they WILL start charging us for usage. Although it is definitely a thought worth contemplating on. I use trillian all day long for business communications. I see nothing in the article stating that they went with linux for: "because of the freedom, so you can fiddle with it, configure it like you want, modify it to fit your needs" It looks to me like they went with linux because it was supposed to work.

Who said anything about "free". They were paying support contracts I ASSume; They certainly had the contracts. I doubt they got them for "free". The whole article read that the people supporting it seemed incompetant.

Yes, when I install/configure/develop something and They PAY for it; they expect ME to fix it; if it has problems. Isn't that the standard?

I do NOT however expect my customers to have the time and/or expertise to do my own debugging/data analysis unless I really need them to (ie: no access). I certainly wouldn't let an issue go, just because my customer didn't get back to me. YOU FOLLOW UP ON THE ISSUE. You send an email, or call asking, "What is the status of this issue"? That is how you find out that the reason they didn't get you the data is that they don't know how or don't have time. That is called being PRO-active.

Finally, Free! Hahaha, I certainly wouldn't expect them to provide the services for FREE. But then again we get back to the issue of having a support contract.

Tech support: "Reboot your computer, if it still isn't working; give us a call back"

If you are a vendor; it is YOUR job to make your client's system work. If you really need the full diagnostics and the customer doesn't have the time/manpower/experience; then have one of your own people do the job.
