if you get into a car accident and your seatbelt fails and you die, what advantage did it serve you?
will you NOT wear a seatbelt because there is a small but nonzero chance of this happening?
you're on slashdot. haven't you seen enough of "Just because a component in a security system may fail, isn't justification to not have a security system"?
I do, weekly, and have taken instruction in its use. It is *not* easy to hit what you're aiming for, in the dark, between 7 and 15 yards, while your adrenaline is rushing and you're under duress, and fine motor skills have gone out the window.
If you miss while aiming at an extremity, where does the bullet go? Into your childs room? Into another apartment? Out a window towards the street and into a car or home? (Same issue as with firing a warning shot)
If you aim for center of mass, you have the greatest chance of STOPPING the threat. You aren't shooting to kill, you're shooting to stop the threat. The moment the threat ceases to be a threat, you stop shooting, and if *safe*, attempt to render aid after calling 911.
Any decent reporter shouldn't need to "spin" anything. thats the entire problem with the media; too much spin and connotation, in one direction or another.
a decent investigative reporter should go in, find out what reasons and charges the arrest was made for, when he was let go, do a thorough review of relevent law (vandalism, USSC decisions on 1A, disorderly conduct, etc), and write up the findings, editorializing nothing. This is of interest alone, without the need for making NYC cops villians or criminalizing the bike dude. Find out and report "what exactly was he doing, why was he arrested, where is the line" so that others can respect this line.
maybe not illegal per se, but if you brandish it at someone who is armed (cop or not), and they respond to the perceived deadly force with deadly force, they probably will get out of it at the trial (assuming, of course, that other than one gun being 'fake', it was justifiable, or a 'clean shoot')
So yeah, airsoft is fun, and the guns are neat, but lets not do anything stupid that could prove dangerous, red tip or not.
You're right; its not just about the money. What about those who thought it was their duty to go there to help rebuild? Diplomats, or contractors who are rebuilding and revamping important infrastructure like water and electricity? To most natives, they would represent an individual who is helping.
To the minority of TERRORISTS and insurgents, they might represent a threat, but then, we all do. You're making sweeping generalizations and invalid analogies.
To extend your analogy, imagine if Bush instituted martial law, eliminated elections, and stayed in power for 20 years. You could get shot if he ever found out that you may have voted for Gore in the past. He might have his lapdogs, and those who remain loyal to him. 20 years later, france or Germany invade the US to dispose of Bush the Dictator, and then send in private contractors to help rebuild after the war, while maintaining a military presence to ensure security and safety, and to hunt down the leader of the insurrection, Rush Limbough.
Would EVERYONE in the country hate the "invaders", or would a good many in the country see them as liberators? Would that hatred extend to those sent to rebuild? Only for the minority with hate so ingrained in their hearts, for those so brainwashed, or so much to lose.
I know you're trolling, but try to separate the actions of the military, and the actions of civilian workers who went there afterwards to *help* build and rebuild.
Until I read this thread, I would have thought that civilians working on reconstruction over there would be acceptable and lauded by both sides of the political spectrum, both pro and anti-war.
The war already happened; theres nothing we can do about that. I'd consider it immoral to *not* have Americans there to help.
Or we could just have all the civilians leave; pull out the contractors, and leave the bombed out Iraqi people to their own devices.
just check out gov't contractor websites for job listings - SAIC, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, CACI, Veridian, Boeing, Raytheon. Heck, http://www.fas.org/man/company/top.htm that should be a veritable "who's who" of companies that may have a job you're looking for.
You know... I don't mind ads for Coke or Pepsi, moviephone, hollywood.com, or something immediately relevent; I can put up with that. But when I go to see Spiderman 2, I AM NOT IN THE DAMN MARKET FOR A CAR, AND LIKELY NO ONE ELSE IN THE THEATER IS EITHER!
If thats the case, I've seen prior art. A panasonic walkman I once had, included a single-button remote control. Click, and it changed presets. Doubleclick, and it did something else. Tripleclick, and it did a third thing. Hold it down, and it switched to the tape player, which had its own modes. Small learning curve, but a great one-button interface.
What about statistics on deaths by knives, shivs, and baseball bats?
what about the statistics showing that while murders by firearm are down, overall crime is up?
or how about these articles that claim that gun crime is up 35%? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1440764.stm h ttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2640817.stm
Overall crime: 9.3% Gun crime: 35% Robbery: 14.5% Domestic burglary: 7.9% Drug offences: 12.3% Sexual offences: 18.2% ( Source: Home Office )
I've read somewhere that they're very distinctive, and you're more likely to be targetted. Switch 'em out to something black, or behind-the-head headphones or something.
"not have the same experience with guns"? I researched my two gun purchases with the same gusto that I researched what lot of Athlon 500 I wanted to overclock with. I go to the range weekly to practice putting holes in paper as accurately as I can, and as quickly as I can. I'm about to drop $800 on a multi-day training class on firearm tactics, as soon as i can fit it into my schedule. (I enjoy it, but I also view it as practical. Plus, it gets me outside occasionally:))
The average gangbanger does not have that experience, just as the average script kiddie holding your domain hostage doesn't have the same experience as you as a sysadmin.
Does this mean that I will definately prevail? No, but it does help my chances if I do need to draw. Hopefully I won't need to; I can give the mugger a wallet and a PDA thats already synched to my home computer, and off he goes, and I call the cops on a cell phone or payphone.
Your assertion that carrying will get you shot is also without basis. If its concealed, how will they know, unless you draw?
I have also found that I've become a lot more aware of my surroundings. Not because I'm itching to shoot someone, but because I really don't want to ever even get into a situation where my life is put in danger, or where I might have to take someone elses; that would hurt me emotionally and financially, even if the police deem it a clean shoot. More likely to get shot at? I'd say, less likely to ever encounter such a situation.
i thought TNT is extremely stable, and requires virtually another detonation to set it off. I could be thinking of C4 or Semtex or something more modern though.
I could have sworn I read that you can actually light it on fire, and it'll burn slowly.
do you really believe that NSAKey is for some insidious purpose?
isn't it much more likely that having their own key in there allows them to sign their own Crypto components for internal use without having to have Microsoft see their secret alterations, or without having Microsofts private key?

So if you don't trust yourself to stay sane, then the world is probably better off that you choose not to have one.
I'm quite confident in my ability to not go on a shooting rage because a new hard drive didn't come in today's FedEx delivery.
Have you ever fired a pistol?
I do, weekly, and have taken instruction in its use. It is *not* easy to hit what you're aiming for, in the dark, between 7 and 15 yards, while your adrenaline is rushing and you're under duress, and fine motor skills have gone out the window.

except for that whole (or partial?) challenger thing.

SCO knows, but they signed an NDA...

There are plenty of companies that sell body armor to civilians. Second Chance is one such.

but I definately had fleeting thoughts of Donnie Darko.

those are pretty significant increases!
great, thanks. so then 100% of the people who are attacked would get stabbed, beaten with a blunt object, or ganged up on.
I'd rather the victim have a gun, so that she might be able to fend off the gangrape.
i find getting stabbed a lot scarier than getting shot. why do you make the assertion that it takes ability to kill with a knife?
try this experiment: Give a marker to a 6 year old and tell him to write on you. I'll bet that you're going to come away with ink on you.
Now imagine how hard it would be to not get stabbed or sliced by an 18 year old punk, who might also have friends with him.
I don't know what you're carrying, but my 9mm compact can carry 15 rounds in the magazine. :)

p.s. funny list!

actually, the design of _his_ actual parachute was only recently tested. (essentially a pyramid of fabric around a square frame at the base)
This was documented on the Imax "Adrenaline Rush" film and was cool as hell!
