  2. Do something on Top U.S. Tech Cities · · Score: 1

Personally, I feel that A) the author inserting his own opinions about any geographical area and B) Wired supporting such views, is unprofessional and poor journalism.

If you live in Texas, love Texas or disagree with the way that opinion was presented in general, write a letter to rants@wired.com, editor@wired.com and maybe patrick@dijusto.com (the author), politely expressing your disappointment with the poorly expressed opinion. Comments like that should be kept to a blog and don't belong on a national tech oriented publication.

  3. The "fashion cycle" on Tomorrow's Cell Phones · · Score: 1

The article states that cell phones have a turnover rate of 17.6 months and that cell phone manufactures are looking more to the fashion world for ideas. I think if they were to provide a consistent method of transfering addresses, pictures, games, etc from one phone to another that it would shrink that window even further. I personally dread getting new phones because I have to spend hours transfering and setting up my numbers, and I leave my old pictures behind. Ringtones are getting a little better now that more phones are supporting MP3s, but proprietary ringtones are lost.

People put an emotional and financial investment into their phones long after they purchase them, and until that sentiment can be transfered, I don't see the window shrinking much.

  4. Something useful? on Blowing TiVo's Lid · · Score: 3, Interesting

This article is a birds eye view of TiVo. It barely scratches the surface of the inner workings of the unit. He touches on things that people have known about for years.

What I would love to see is someone totally hack a TiVo, and come up with their own distro that is capable of running MythTV.

Yes, it may seem a little redundant, but with the future of TiVo up in the air, a lot of customers may have nothing but useless doorstops one day and having an alternate TiVo distro would be a great way to save them and keep them running. After all, why dedicate a PC to the task when you can have an embedded unit doing what it was designed to do.

It's a little ackward right at first but it doesn't take long to get used to the action of the roller bar. It's nice not having to move your hands to operate the mouse, but then I barely have to do that on my laptop anyway.

  10. 0%? on Consensus on Global Warming · · Score: 1, Troll

Well, let me be one of the 0% that chimes in with my opinion.

Why exactly are humans soley responsible for global warming? Hasn't the planet been warming up for the past 50,000 years? We were in an ice age at one time, were we not? How do we know that this warming cycle is not due to some earthly cycle that occurs once every X thousand years? We simply haven't been around long enough to collect enough data to determine whether we are responsible or not.

I've read some articles that show that humans are only 1% responsible for global warming and that the other 99% is due to natural causes. Humans are awefully arrogant to think that they alone can destroy the planet through pollution. Mother nature has quite the track record for polluting itself for the past few million years. Anyone take a look at Mt St Helens when it blew in the 80's? It blasted more toxins and pollutants into the atmosphere than mankind has since the beginning of the industrial revolution.

  11. Program guide on Linux-PVR Distribution LinVDR 0.7 Released · · Score: 1

I glossed through the website, but didn't see anything definitive regarding how the program guide is handled.

One point of contention I have is that most of the program guides for DIY systems are really just hacks. There is no publicly accessible database for downloading PG information. So you're limited to screenscraping Zap2it's website and hoping the layout doesn't change.

I personally think program guide information should be public information, but even Microsoft had to pay royalties out the nose to get the rights to use program guide info, so that doesn't leave us much hope ... unless ... we push for our own "open program guide"...

  12. What's the point? on G4 Tech TV Reviews Three New HDTV DVRs · · Score: 1

I can't see the point of this review. The first DVR is for Dish Network's service. The second DVR is for DirecTV's service and the third one is for OTA (over the air) recordings. It can't even record satellite or cable broadcast HD. How can you compare products that aren't designed to be used in the same arena? The only thing the article will tell you is which service provider to choose (if any) based on the features of the DVR.

Quite frankly I'm not surprised by the lack of third party HD recorders in this "review". It's a problem that is plaguing the HD industry right now.

One thing leads to another and I could see game developers reaching this level one day.

  15. Considering it's diet ... on Ever Smell T-Rex's Breath? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I recently saw a very interesting program on Discovery that hinted at T-Rex actually being a scavenger, not a hunter.

They had several interesting theories to back this up. For example, T-Rex had a very bad center of gravity for one thing. This coupled with the fact that it's arms were so small meant that it would not pick itself back up if it fell. This meant that T-Rex probably didn't run because it didn't want to fall. It probably walked everywhere and in walking, the only food it would be able to catch would be already dead food.

Other reasons that pointed out it's "scavengaristic" diet where things like it's olfactory senses. Porportionally it is the same size as a vulture.

So, the theory that it ate already rotting flesh would greatly contribute to it's problems with halitosis!

  16. The distance factor on SBC Planning 15-25Mbps DSL Networks · · Score: 1

If this does mitigate the distance factor for DSL service it might allow me to get my DSL back from SBC.

When I first moved into my new house I ordered SBC DSL, fully expecting their 1.4 mbit service. When I checked the status on the website I saw that I was actually signed up with the 384 package due to distance problems. When I got it hooked up I never got more than 192. After have the service for 8 months, my service became very unreliable in the middle of July. I called a tech out and they disconnected my service citing that I was too far from the CO.

Now I have a 512KB cable package, but as much as I dislike SBC, I hate my cable company even more.

  19. Re:Switch to Voom on Viacom and DishNetwork Battle On Air Over Contract · · Score: 1

My Voom is being installed on Wednesday. I've been waiting 2 months for an 811 receiver for a measley 3 channels of high def for $10 extra. Forget that! I'm getting pretty much the same "watched channels" with Voom plus tons of high def for cheaper than what I would be paying Dish. By watched channels, I mean Voom doesn't waste bandwidth on HSN, QVC, Classic Soul, etc.

Sure it's a young company and the future is uncertain, but with $0 up front and no contract, I'm willing to take the "risk".

A few months back, AT&T rolled out their GSM network. When I went into the store to inquire about getting a new GSM phone, they told me that I had to change my phone number because the prefix that I had was actually leased from SBC and SBC was reclaiming all of their prefixes since the lease was up on them. So, SBC owns(owned?) the prefix for my phone. But now with wired number portability being an option, who actually owns the numbers?

I should theoretically be able to march into AT&T and demand a GSM phone with my existing phone number now, no?
