The point is that given the inevitability of human error and insatiable greed, is nuclear the best option? This is the point the anti-nuke crowd has been making. Yes, it CAN be done safely...in theory. But, what happens when corporation A figures that regulation X hurts profits too much so they lobby to get it waivered, and regulation Y is weakly enforced, so they just ignore it altogether?

Personally, I like the idea of nuclear power. I just don't trust it in the hands of any organization with a profit motive.

Why do people always say that? By your logic, gasoline isn't a fuel either since it took millions of years of pressure to form it. Solar and wind power aren't fuel sources either, since you need a giant ball of fusion to create both, etc. We don't have an energy problem, we have a transportable energy problem.

  17. Did anyone play the RPG Rifts? on Ugly Truth of Space Junk · · Score: 2

It was an 80s-ish RPG. One of the background stories was that Word War 3 broke out and because of all the space weapons and counter-weapons blasting each other to bits and throwing up buckshot at each other, Earth's orbit becomes full of so much shrapnel that it's impossible to achieve orbit. When the Chinese tested that laser on a satellite target, that's what I immediately thought of. Space weapons are a stupid, expensive, potentially disastrous idea. Look at how bad space junk is getting and we haven even *tried* to fill orbits with crap.

  18. Practicality of going small on 24 Rooms in 344sq Feet · · Score: 1

I'm a single guy living in a 3 bedroom, 2 car garage house. Waste of space? Yes and no. I need the garage to work on vehicles and a once car garage is insanely small for storing tools and having space to move around your car and motorcycle. I've got my office and exercise equipment in the finished basement. One bedroom and the formal dining room are never used. Houses tend to add amenities as price and # of bedrooms increase, and it's those amenities I want. The wasted space just comes with the package. I think this design is awesome, but I can't imagine living in a space so small I had no real estate to spread out a project to work on.

An IT buddy turned me on to Ubuntu years back and it's been my home networking platform of choice (save the OpenBSD firewall). I even got my boss to install it here in the office for intranetworking. Hey, Ubuntu maybe didn't develop their tools, but as an out-of-the-box experience for a programmer who isn't looking to become a network admin, it's all I've ever wanted!
