  1. Speak Out! on Ask Slashdot: SIM-Card Solutions In North America? · · Score: 1

Try the 7-11 "Speak Out" sim card. The sim card is $10 and can be used in most modern phones. Then you buy minute cards. The best part is instead of the minutes only being active for one month, they are good for a whole year. So, buy a $25 card and you have an emergency phone that has minutes for a year.

  2. I'm confused. on The Case Against Gmail · · Score: 1

I use Outlook to check my Gmail account (among others). I've never had any issues with it in the past nor currently. Pop in the info and it sets it up automatically. Same thing goes with my iPad, Samsung Aceii Phone and my old Blackberry. Never any issues at all. As with the OP, I've had Gmail since the beginning and I haven't noticed any changes (to be fair, I never check my email with my browser so changes there would have gone unnoticed). I have to wonder what sort of third part programs the author was having trouble with.

I've been using computers since the 80's. I've seen TONs of changes and used many OSes. IMO, Windows 8 is a great! I like the clean bar with no Start Button (In fact, it's even easier because all you have to do is point your mouse down there and click to bring up the menu). The "Metro Screen" is really just a fancy start menu. Click on the desktop icon and you are back to your normal desktop. Point to the lower left corner and you can access your fancy, cool new start menu (Metro Screen). Folks really need to learn to use the system before complaining about it.

Actually, I work on my server during the day and often have multiple windows open (I run a dual screen set up). During my down time, I do a lot of music recording and have a full home studio set up. If you start looking at the "Metro" screen as a fancy start menu, it really is just a decorative upgrade. Not anything to freak out about.

  12. I like Windows 8 on Microsoft Blames PC Makers For Windows Failure · · Score: -1

I know. I'm probably the only one. It really is simple and I have no idea why everyone is having a hard time. The system is identical to Windows 7 only the boring "Start Menu" has been replaced by the "Start Screen" with "Live tiles". It's turned one of the drab features into something cool. Other than that (without having a touch screen), it is the same as Windows 7. It starts up on the "Start Screen". You can either click on a tile to choose an activity or you can click on the "Desk Top" tile to go to your usual desk top. If folks are having a hard time understanding that, they probably should not be using a computer.

  13. Good Riddance! on Canada To Stop Producing Pennies In 2013 · · Score: 1

I see a lot of people arguing about the value of the penny. Discussing whether it's worth more than a penny or less than a penny, etc. Truth is, I could care less. All I know is that it is a worthless coin, to a consumer. It is only taking up space in our pockets. Heck, it takes a hundred of them just to make one stinking dollar! No...Good riddance to the penny, I say. I'll gladly pay the (maximum) 4 cents per purchase, to not ever have to deal with a pocket full of useless coins, again (until we set our sights on the nickel, that is).

  16. This one's easy. No amount is safe for driving. I think it should be the same for alcohol as well. If you drink or smoke, you shouldn't drive. Simple as that. Then there are no worries about blood levels etc. If you have any in your system, you are in trouble. Just to frame this, I should add that I drink occasionally and used to smoke pot (haven't done it since my Daughter was born; if it was legal though...) So it's not like I'm a prude.

Sorry to keep adding to my own posts, but... I've seen a few folks complaining about upgrading and losing your mods/hacks/customizations. With phpBB, the update packages scan your code and automatically integrate any changes, into the update package. All changes are easily and automatically, assimilated into the new update.

  22. Re:Be Careful on Ask Slashdot: What Is the Best Way To Add Forums To a Website? · · Score: 1

Not true with phpBB. The update automatically looks for changes in the coding and then integrates those changes into the update package. I've updated my forum, many times, including a major upgrade (from 2-3). I've never lost any of the customizations or mods.

Oh, one other thing. Try to stick with one of the two, major versions/styles: Prosilver or Subsilver2. Most of the mods are created for one of these two styles. If you are adding a mod to them, it's very easy with the "Automod" feature.

  24. phpBB on Ask Slashdot: What Is the Best Way To Add Forums To a Website? · · Score: 2

I've set up several forums on my home server and I co-admin on a professional forum. The pro forums are running UBB Threads. Great software, but a little limiting. For my forums, I run phpBB. The software is easy to install, easy to upgrade and easy to mess around with. There are "mods" for practically any feature you'd want to add and with the easy integration, it's as simple as pointing the control panel to the installation file for the mod you want. Their forums are top notch and pretty much any questions you may have are there, already answered. If not, they are quick to help out. Best of all, phpBB is completely free. One thing I'd recommend is a basic, working understanding of HTML, CSS and some PHP. If you can't program in these languages, at the very least, you'll need to be able to edit existing code if you want to change your look. However, it should be noted that there are thousands of "skins" out there, all of which can easily get you really close to the look you are going for and then minor changes (like switching out the logo) are easy. Read through the forums, have a look at some of the forums people have built and, if you want to give it a try, download it and mess around for a bit. Because it's free, if you don't like it, there is no loss!
