  1. CVS tarballs and examples from the book... on CD-ROMs with Books -- Worth Your While? · · Score: 1

Binaries usually are out of date, especially when you consider that most publishers rarely seem to update the CDs, even for newer editions of the book.

Now, if the CDs had CVS tarballs instead, then it shouldn't be so much trouble to update everything. Just plop the contents down somewhere, and pull source on top. Don't forget to use -z6 though, else it still might take a good long time before you have something buildable.

And yeah, sample code from the book, that's worthwhile, always! Saves the trouble of typing it in by hand, fixing errors (there's always at least one when copying from a book by hand), etc. ad nauseum.

And anything with any sort of b/w restriction is an abomination!

    Thanks, though, jest3r.

  3. Let's see better cable access in Ontario... on A Step Closer (Or Not) To Cable ISP Diversity · · Score: 3, Insightful

We have three (or is it now two) cable providers in southern Ontario, each in their nice little zones. Where I am, there's Rogers Cable, with horrible cable internet access since before @Home died. Cogeco, out in the boonie areas (Niagra, Belleville, other places like those) provides access too, better from what I've heard, but then again, I'm not in a Cogeco zone. Shaw, the company that seems to have all but vanished, never provided cable internet access, at least not when they had control of the zone I live in.

So my only alternative is to go with Bell/Sympatico for broadband access, or get a T1. Considering what either costs, compared to hellish cable or my so-so dialup, I'll stick to Primus, thanks very much.

Let's see real cable competition in Ontario, followed by _working_ (as opposed to spotty) cable internet access.

From an earlier /. article, this is the NASA plan for terraforming. Though I still think that some of the more interesting parts of Mars (the Pyramid, anyone?) should be investigated thoroughly before any plans begin.

And I still like my roving iron plant idea from an earlier post regarding this article. Cheap iron, and more greenhouse gasses to create an atmosphere with. The only concern would be fuel, but I'll bet a Coke that if it goes to the boards, the design team will figure that issue out.

  14. Re:Well this changes everything .... on Lots of Ice On Mars · · Score: 4, Interesting

Yes, and with the Fe all over, set up roving factories to scoop up, filter, and create iron ingots. This should cause some greenhouse emissions, I believe, and a number of other gasses, I believe including steam, would help in the creation of an atmosphere.

What would really be interesting, though, would be how the Martian cities are in Cowboy Bebop. Though, I don't think that such a plan is really workable. It would be simpler and less expensive (in terms of more than just money) to terraform the entire planet.

Before Mars is terraformed, however, someone should be sent out to check the Pyramid, ruins, and other features of that area.

The rejects bin is a good idea, though, and perhaps earlier access to articles (they can read articles thirty minutes before they appear to the general public, and post to them then). This would help with the 'f1r5t pS0t' issue, because I doubt that the trolls would bother paying any money to read Slashdot. Perhaps also e-mail notification of when an article appears (which would be nessesary under the early article idea). I'd shill for that, had I enough income to spend on it.
