Working for a vendor supporting the SME market, while I wish our standard was N-1 for software (Excluding Vista. Glad to see many here have had similarly negative experiences, or I'd be saying "Maybe I just don't get it"), I can say, however, the mantra when dealing with a system is:
"Please don't be Windows 9x/NT 4.0" (The latter of which I have an MCSE in)....Win2K/XP/2K3 are so similar in a day to day support/usage situations, I have yet to see a massive, compelling reason to recommend customers upgrade. New systems? No brainer, but something that's doing the same thing it was three years ago, and doing it well. Absolutely no need to upgrade. As a matter of fact, "Because it's the latest thing" has got to be the worst reason to upgrade something in the world.
Wet? Well, at the moment, Yeah. Thanks La Niña...:-(
Under-insulated houses? So fix it. Get some Pink Bats or that spray in stuff.
Customer service? Nothin wrong with it...
Beetroot...And don't forget the egg.
I moved to NZ from Washington State almost 20 years ago. I talk with family in the US, and they're always stressing out about one thing or another. Me? I'm outside havin a barbecue...:-)
LOL. Why is this flamebait? Not like most Yanks would know (Wish I could find a link to the video on YouTube with the Yanks identifying Australia as France...).
Stay away! Don't come to New Zealand! It sucks! The people are mean! The education system is awful! Health care is a joke! The environment is rubbish! The pay is crap! The quality of living is substandard! Everyone hates us, and we're at war with the world! Stay away! *please*...:-)
Yes, well try living in one of those countries with "ridiculous tax rates". Free or cheaper heath care. Free or cheaper tertiary education. Lower crime rates through a restorative justice system, as opposed to just "Lock 'em up". Decent public transport. But you are a "patriotic American", which from experience equals "Get a brain morans. Go USA!". So you stick with that. The rest of us are enjoying you staying right where you are.

Mate, if the most inconvenient thing you've got to deal with in your life is putting your password in after 10 minutes of inactivity on your machine, you must have a pretty sweet life. I hate it when people whine about this. You know there are people starving in Africa?
Wow. I can't believe I will have had my account for a couple of years soon. It expires next March. Guess we'll see what happens then. While I host my own site with PowWeb, I 'outsource' my blog (Blogger), photos (Flickr) and videos (YouTube). As these services change from what I want them to do/be I will probably bring them in house (As the DIY FOSS market for these services matures).
Why has your interest waned? Has something changed? My primary uses for Flickr are:
1) An online photo album for friends and family spread around the world.
2) A quick/easy way to upload/access images for my blog.
3) An additional backup repository for our digital photos, in addition to our file server and my portable drive....These are uses which I can't see changing for me any time soon, so I'm curious why someone's value of Flickr would diminish.
As a Flickr user, this would be my first experience with being "Yahoo'd", which as many have said, is synonymous with being loaded up with ads. The funny thing is, when you see these large corporates buying up these types of little companies, and then trying to minimax a profit out of their popularity, they almost always seem to destroy everything that people loved about the product/service in the first place. I guess the short term profit that these companies get is sufficient to make this practice worth it.
The interesting thing in the case of Flicker is, how much time and effort have Flickr users put in to tagging, geo-tagging, and blog and web page linking to photos on Flickr, and how much does Yahoo have to ruin Flickr to overcome the investment in time that Flickr users have made? I have specifically avoided putting too much effort in to tagging as the tags (To my knowledge) are not portable (Plus my file names are sufficiently informative), and should Flickr ever jump the shark, or I decide to move on, I don't have hours/days/weeks/months/years of work to lose.
Just a slight sidetrack re: American commercials. We had some family visit (To NZ, from the US), and a soap commercial came on with a woman lathering up in the shower. Nothing too raunchy, though you see a bit of bum cleavage for a sec, and the family said "Wow. Your commercials sure are a bit racy here". Um...Okaaaay.
A few people have mentioned this, but I can't believe it's not the first response from everyone. How the hell is it that someone is supplying unrestricted access to the Net? Doesn't everyone operate behind a firewall and web proxy with a control list/filter policy and have employees sign an acceptable usage policy? I've worked in IT for 12 years now, and since Internet access became ubiquitous around '99/'00 I've never worked somewhere that didn't filter web access. I can't fathom not doing so. I'd have to ask "Are you defective?".
As for the specific report, (Obligatory) Lies -> Damn lies -> Statistics, and 75% of all statistics are made up.
Can someone tell me if this guy is kidding, or do (Some percentage of) Yanks (His Flying Appendageness forbid) think like this? Or are they just letting every 12 year old troll the Interwebs the nowadays?
Kill the water heater except immediately before showering.
Actually, I think you'd find it takes less electricity to constantly keep topping up the water cylinder's temperature rather than letting it cool and heating it up from cold again. To help, try insulating your water cylinder (Do people do this in the US?), though apparently this is less important with modern cylinder's, or even go solar:-).
Additionally, make sure your house is insulated (I'm pretty sure this is standard practise in American homes, but sadly, New Zealand is only catching on to this idea), change your light bulbs over to compact fluorescent light bulbs, and consider hanging our washing out to dry if you can rather than a dryer. You clothes will last longer too...:-)

I vaguely recall something a few months back saying "Entertainment Tonight" was America's most "trusted news source"...Eek. :-(
I've decided "American Idol and Terrorism" are the new "panem et circenses".
