Downloaded it, installed it, created a database, then table, inserted data into table, all within 15 minutes. Not bad. It looks pretty cool. Of course DB2 is all over it, and I noticed a tool to migrate to DB2 when this isn't big enough.
It has a transaction log, row level locking, locking isolation levels, deadlock detection, etc. This really is a full featured database like DB2, Oracle, or Sybase. NO it isn't comparable, but it has the basic features. I deal with mutli-terabyte databases every day, and would love to have the time to create and torture Cloudscape on that level. Oh well, never anytime to play.
Microsoft is not new to Unix. They had Xenix way back...1987 licensed from SCO. SCO built Xenix in 1983 I think. Xenix was a port of AT&T Unix System III. Ah, the old days.
I remember getting paid minimum wage (like $3-4/hour or so in 1982) to do Unix programmiung. All the IBM mainframe system programmers would actually laugh at me.
As a current resident of Portland, and a proponent of *nix (except SCO;-) ) it is good to have Linus here.
However, it seems the government in Portland/Multnomah county hates all companies. It is rated as one of the worst places to start a company. We've lost most of our high tech jobs.
Geez, Intel is here and this is the place where the Pentium cpu's are designed. I mean there was a lot going on here ten years ago.
A 9% INCOME TAX is just f*cking ridiculus. Of course we have no sales tax; it doesn't make up for the stupid income tax. The government leaders here make it so difficult to have a business here. We've got major problems here in Portland.
So many people here have this dream of a great quality of life, and we do have a great one. But we've gone out of balance. It seems like, that if you have a business then the attitude is "you don't deserve profit and your'e lucky we let you stay".
If cities were operating systems, then Portland would be Microsoft Windows, and Seattle would be Linux! Quite ironic, actually.
They can keep it. It hasn't been updated with cool new features in years. I'm using it on several of my servers now (forced to use it), and it is nothing but a problem. HPUX and AIX give me some real solid enterprise level features.
Microsoft Windows + Supercomputer = Commodore Vic20
Also, an infinite number of monkeys sitting at computer terminals typing would eventually come up with Microsoft Windows only the result would actually work. In theory.;->
Frankly, after about ten years experience very few companies want to hire you. Reasons:
1. They think you're too expensive 2. They think you will be a hard-ass 3. They think they can't control you, because you have been around the block and know the corporate bullshit. Which is true. 4. You are no longer idealistic and won't work OT much 5. You are smarter than the hiring manager, and he knows it 6. Your name is to easy to pronounce 7. If you were laid off and couldn't find a job in this crappy economy, then you must be really bad person. 8. Old people (over 40 maybe 35 these days) are lucky they are allowed to breathe. 9. You'll be bored. 10. Corporate medical insurance premiums raise drasticly with more older workers. (VERY TRUE AND COMPANIES HIRE BASED ON IT)
XML allows you to create your own tags in your own format. Just because it's ascii doesn't mean anything. If you don't know what each element is meant to do, then who cares?
It makes storing it in a database easier, but so what. XML structure is standard, but not the definition extentions.
What is wrong with corporate management today? Are they that clueless about winblows? This doesn't make sense.
What is really bad is that so many techies actaully want microshaft servers and desktops. microshaft has brainwashed them. It like a cult!
That's it! Microsoft is a CULT!!!!! Rational logical thinking (critical thinking) doesn't apply to cults. There is no reasoning with religion. You believe or you will go to hell!
Believe in Microsoft or your computing soul will go to hell!
Bill Gates is the god.
Now I understand. Must protect myself. Oh Linus! Help me.
At the beginning of the assignment, you must determine if you are there to accomplish a goal or to prove the point of the hiring manager.
During the interview phase determine if the assigment is "prove the manager's point", then decide to take the assigment or not.
A consultant is paid for well thought out opinions based on facts. Document everything, and preface it with "in my opinion" either written or verbally.
A consultant does real work also. Actual bit flipping.
The difference between a consultant and contractor? About $60/hour.
The following is simply my opinion. Probably only held by myself and no one else on the face of the earth, or mars.
Hello, McFly!
Microsoft loves this. Apple is a very small part of the market and now with this event, there is less focus. Thank god Darwin itself is NOT a factor at all, unlike Linux. Some egos are running amuck. Reality check please!
If everyone thinks this about free software, or better software, think again. It's about control, I.E., power.
Microsoft has the power, and we don't want to be controlled any more than the current amount.
Face it, someone always has some amount of control over our lives. It's a part of existing in a society. We join the society, and agree to give up some control of our lives for the good of the whole. Those who don't join a society usually end up in a shoot out in Idaho.
Don't flip as many bits, and think about the whole.
Then again, I may be the one who needs the reality check.
Microsoft won the war. I don't like it, however I've come to cope with it.
Mind you if I had a billion dollars or so, I'd love to put a lot of it into OpenOffice development and actually make OpenOffice so good that there would no reason to buy from Microsoft. I don't think that will be happening soon though.
At home I use MacOsX, with a RedHat 7.2 server. Win2k at work.
Crystal Reports I use. Boring, but it doesn't execute on Linux. Maybe MacOsX in the future.
We need a stable, and fast GUI with GREAT drivers for all video cards. X sucked fifteen years ago. No one would agree. Sun's OpenWindows was pretty cool. Remember CDE? Someone must be "in charge" and have a vision. It simply won't and can't happen because of each person's ego that is involved with Linux GUI's. Hell, we can't even have a single version of Linux for each targeted application(desktop, embedded, server, etc.)
Linus controls the Linux kernel. Bill controls Microsoft. Steve controls Apple. Etc, Etc, Etc.
All successful. Communism doesn't work with software either.
Don't gripe about someone with a vision that makes it happen, regardless of the way they implement it.
Basic human nature: I want it now! I want it cheap!
Most people have a certain amount of dysfunction in their life, so they are used to the concept. So software that fails keeps them in their comfort zone. Most people get worried when everything goes right.
Nicolo Machiavelli advised every new prince to not make life to hard on the body politic, otherwise they revolt. Microsoft, Et al, might be close to a revolt? Maybe, maybe not.
I know for a fact that @Home tech support will set a static ip address routinely, if they can't get DHCP working quickly. The pressure to get call time down is very high. I don't work there.

noun.
1. A psychotic disorder characterized by delusions of persecution with or without grandeur, often strenuously defended with apparent logic and reason.
2. Extreme, irrational distrust of others.
It sure does work doesn't it Bill?

Sorry to rant.

What good is 400Gb if you can't read/write the data quick enough. You need an interface and a buss structure that supports this size effectively.
Try Fibre Channel interface and PCI-X buss.
Geeeez

move to India
Why?
Hobbyist!
No SCO Risk
Why Not?
I don't have the time...
Just another GUI, nothing revolutionary
I still miss OS/2!!
billy gates, sco: no difference.

Grins and giggles.
If you are motivated to acquire knowledge, take the classes in the PhD program.
Just refuse the PhD degree.
The PhD paper is for your ego and/or (maybe) money.
Be honest with yourself. Ego and money are valid motivations
Knowledge without knowing is a waste.
Nuf said.

Too much money. If you have unlimited resources for any endeavor, basic human nature kicks in: be lazy, sloppy, etc.
Limited resources generates unlimited creativity.
You state: "California (home base of American liberalism)"
Evidently you've never been to Portland or Eugene, Oregon.
