No, it does not gaurantee a working OSX installation.
But the fact that the darwin kernel boots, and Aqua can start up (no quartz extreme in the
installer i am guessing) and the installer runs, he's doing _very_ well.
Infact, if he concentrates on just getting darwin working reliably (he said theres a few quirks)
you can bet that OSX will run just as reliably. Its just the Aqua GUI (and carbon, cocao, apps,
and all that other crap) running on Darwin. Darwin is the OS though, and as long as Darwin runs,
and runs well, OSX should be a no brainer.
Getting some good hardware support in OSX for video, sound, and what not might be another story
tho.
Some speed would also be nice. OSX isn't gonna run if it takes 3 weeks to install on a
10mhz emulated PowerPC chip;)
But i just read the website. Its 500 times slower than the real thing:(
Oh well. Guess the previous posters are correct. Apple won't go after this project as its next to useless. Infact, it might be a good thing. It lets people try out and play with MacOS X before they commit to buying all that expensive hardware. (Nevermind the legal issues of course.)
When I was first trying to make the decision to buy a mac, spending 5 minutes or 30 minutes "playing" with it at the store wasn't enough. I wanted to spend several days on it, using it to do all the things i do now, but in a different enviornment. You can't do that in the shop.
So i ended up borrowing a friends crappy old imac (which only ran OS9) and chucked a priated copy of OSX 10.1 i downloaded of the net.
Loved it to bits, and promptly bought my PowerBook G4. (And then that cube of ebay;).
So, i spose, this emulator will give people the ability to try out MacOSX and run it to do day to day stuff, albiet very very slowly. Its a well known fact Microsoft never went after software pirates in the old days so that their software become so widespread it became the standard. Perhaps this might work for Apple, too.
I fail to see how ATX is aging.. it might have some short commings, sure.. but hell, it seems like only yesterday ATX came out. (And i remember we were all whinging cuz we needed new cases, new powersupplies, everything, and couldn't upgrade from our old AT form factor).
All that said, the ATX form factor was a nice improvement on the AT form factor though. No longer needed a 240v mains powercable to the powerswitch on the front, more standardised, and has that cool panel at the back for all your motherboard cable plugs so you didn't need to use serial ports/parallel ports/etc on brackets taking up space where you could put in your ISA cards;)
Ah the good 'ol days;)
I still got an old Dual Pentium 200 doing good work as a server...
This was back in 1997 i think??. I had a Cyrix P166+ running Windows NT. The poor machine STRUGGLED like hell, using 50 to 60% cpu. (apparently because the cpu had a very bad maths co processor, and decoding an mp3 uses alot of floating point math, so it was killing the cpu).
It also caused it to crash regularly. I found underclocking my cpu to 150mhz fixed the problem.
But i still have that original mp3 that a friend sent me, burnt to CD-R:)
I don't use winamp anymore, i use itunes. And i use limewire. I think the file was sent to me over irc (dcc) originally.
What about all us people with titanium powerbooks that have serious paint issues?
I have been extremely careful with mine... yet paint is coming off everywhere! It literally bubbles off, and other places the paint has completely discoloured...
I know i'm not the only one that has these problems, some batches of tibooks have had severe paint issues, and nothing has been done about that either....
I have found this to be the case, too. I didn't want my gf's son (an 8 year old) having admin access on my XP machine, but half the damn games required admin access.
This required rightclicking on the game's shortcut, selecting 'run as' and calling me over to type in my admin password... several times a day! )(#@()$*@#()$&@#$@#
Its not that programs want to write to the registry, or system files, or anything else.
It simply seems to be the cd copy protection... most games have various types of cd copy protection (i dunno, daemon tools can emulate most of them when it mounts iso's, but anyway). It seems the games require admin access to perform their little sneaky copy protection checks on the CD...
Personally i think this is a real pain in the damn ass (why do we need the CD in there anyway! The game is already installed FFS) and now we require to give all kids admin access on XP machines just to play games! Its a damn nightmare.
No wonder we hate software manufactureres for all their sneaky copy protection, serial keys, product activation, and now needing admin access to run anything.... *sighs*
I'm glad i bought my titanium powerbook. And last week i bought a used G4 cube. Forget windows....
But they have always had their own solution. Big Brother is usually airing when the weather isn't particularly hot... showers have hot water available for about 30 mins starting from 10am every day.
So the housemates have to get up to have their shower, or they are stuck having a cold one....
It usually works. 1 or 2 housemates are always up ready to have their shower, the rest ignore it...
They usually try to come up with interesting solutions, such as getting hot water from the sink to use in the shower, etc to get around the hot water shower restrictions;)
People stuck in a house for 3 months come up with all sorts of intersting solutions to problems that the show planners never thought of... and sometimes they end up having to intervene to stop the housemates.
In big brother 2003, the house mates were seperated into two houses, and both of them built a sun dial!
I was thinking that the second I read "Dobra Voda" on slashdot.org.
I'm polish, btw.

The footnotes about a Firewire Dino going on a rampage and needing to be well fed is damn funny:) Along with the rarely eats, and keep children away just in case! lol.
I want one, and i don't even NEED a FireWire hub (my external DVD burner gives me additional ports and is a hub more or less).
About time, i've been complaining about this for years!
Buy a 8gb hdd and you get some 7.8gb space. Yeah, ok..
Buy a 80 hdd and you get only 77gb space. Ya what? Where did 3 whole gb go?
You can argue that 1Gb = 1000Mb till the cows come home, but every OS (Linux, BSD, OSX, Windows!) say that 1Gb = 1024Mb and that 1Kb = 1024 Bytes, etc.
So as far as Windows is concerned, your 80Gb hdd isn't 80 gigabytes at all, but a whole lot smaller. Linux, BSD, MacOSX, hell, even MS-DOS says the same thing.
Unreal Tournament (OS9/OSX) Unreal Tournament 2003 Warcraft 3 + Expansion Diablo II Quake 3 Quake 3: Team Arena Jedi Knight II (this is awesome)
Plus I am sure there are stacks of others. These are all games that I personally play on my LAN at home (I have a Titanium PowerBook, the other machine is a Pentium III XP box).
No problems what so ever!
Some of those games (Like War3, D2) are hybrid cd's and contain PC and Mac on the same CD. Others like Q3 are very easy to convert... just copy pak0.pak of the CD, and get the latest q3 patch off the net to get the OSX binaries. Your off!

OMG!
I never thought this day would finally come... a PowerPC emulator that
is stable and mature enough to actually run MacOS X on an x86!
Oh well, i've already bought 2 macs now (Titanium Powerbook G4) and a G4

etc).
But still, I wonder... will apple try to kill this project?

So its gonna be all over gnutella, winmx, etc?
If Apple keeps going after every website that hosts it, its gonna be everywhere on P2P... what are they gonna do then?
