Simply placing a car in an area where it is likely to get stolen would not, to any reasonable person, qualify as "government agents [persuading or talking] the person into committing the crime".
That's still not going to keep some damn ambulance chaser lawyer or pansy-ass liberal thinktanker from crying "entrapment" and spending more taxpayer $$ on frivilous lawsuits.
In the world we live in right now- resources are not going to be primarily aimed at keeping content locked up. There are larger, more pressing issues. (like staying alive)
Exactly, which is why crap like DMCA, SSSCA, etc continue to be foised on the US by dumb-ass Congressmen beholden to their lobbyists. Big Companies know that eventually they will be able to get something through if they enough times, witness DMCA.
"Getting raped"? What are you, a professional student? Sheesh, wake up and get back in the real world.
Wait, I got an idea, how about instead of getting $100/hr for your consulting, you get $30/hr and you can keep the damn code. Heh, principles are expensive, aren't they?
Here in Rochester NY (near Buffalo) we have RoadRunner/TimeWarner cable and Telco DSL available, so the competition helps prices and access speeds.
On DSL, I have 600Kbps down/128Kbps up. Friends with cable have between 500 and 1000 Kbps up and down. The service is good with both systems, defined as few outages and proper operation once the initial installation headaches are over.
There's also a B-52 that you can crawl around in at the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport (near Detroit, MI) . (At least it was there when I visited 2 years ago.) It's been declassified, it'd be interesting to see what went in where the black steel plates are! I recall one thing that wasn't removed, the "voting switch" that the pilot and weapons' officer both had to throw to launch (activate?) the nukes.
There's alot of other interesting aircraft there as well, an OV-xx Bronco (twin-turboprop vietnam-era squad/specOps transport), a WWII-vintage B-24 bomber, and a DC-3 used by NASA.
Lots of restoration work being done by skilled, dedicated volunteers. Very interesting place for plane buffs to visit!
Yeah!! I want support of FadSoft's FAD encoding too!!
Dammit, why doesn't everyone support 300 different kinds of CODECs in their consumer-grade products???? Conspiracy by the Wintel cabal, I tell you!! </sarcasm>
I think a relavant tangent to this is how developers view themselves. In the "professional world", many of my peers view themselves as "artists", meaning that they can't code unless the mood strikes them, their work can't be rushed, etc. The other camp (myself included) believes software development to be a creative process, which requires some time for the creative process, but shouldn't dominate.
But, this probably mostly applies to professional software development, not academic/government-type work.
Seriously, I just don't get it. How can anyone take GPLd Wine and sell it and declare their fork closed??
On an un-related note, please check out my new compiler, edcc, based on the hard work of thousands. Supports all features of GNU gcc and more, just don't tell RMS!;-)
cheap as dirt
Where? WalMart doesn't sell it anymore, BestBuy has it for full price (US$100 for Sports2K pak or whatever it's called) and all the e-bay auctions for working models are commanding at least $50 for a basic system. That's not too cheap in my book, especially for a system that has been officially end-of-lifed by Sega.
I'd love to get my hands on one of these for a MAME host or simple Linux box. So, what's a souce for cheap ones??
Yes!! If it wasn't for Garanamals(tm) I wouldn't be such a snappy dresser! Also, I like BillG telling me where I want to go today. It's a nice sense of peacefulness not having my day bogged down in silly choices!
Why does this come as a suprise to anyone? Microsoft's modus operandi is to embrace, extend, extinguish every technology that could make them money. It's just that the Internet is so huge is why it hasn't happened already with that.
Of course, their failures are spectacular too, such as Acti-mates, and the one that's so obvious, I'm not even going to mention it.
Thousands of corps are saving millions of $$ by running their voice and data traffic side by side
This may be true for a corporation, but it just isn't cost-effective for a carrier to implement and deploy for it's customers. The calls are cheap, but the VoIP equipment, installation + implementation, manpower, dedicated private data network, network equipment, etc. are what costs big $$$. Not to mention, the cost of standard circuit-switched long distance is aproaching 3 cents per minute range. The original projections for cost savings with VoIP were based on 10-15 c/min.
This is a fascinating topic for research, speculation, and sci-fi, but like AI, is probably like the search for the holy grail. (Of course, Indy (courtesy of Mr. Speilberg) showed us that it really does exist!!)
Don't buy albums from RIAA members. There's a lot of great music that isn't issued on major labels, go out and find it!
Easy to say, difficult to do. The RIAA has become such a monopoly because the represent (indirectly through their labels) all major artists and most "minor" ones. I doubt that this form of protest would amount to much.

One thing that VI is lacking: week's worth of time to configure everything to "the way I like it," they way it was on my last system:-)

I'm suprised nobody's mentioned this product yet. Has anyone had experience with it? (I've installed it but haven't got it working due to unrecognzed-but-allegedly-tulip.o NIC.) Look at Mandrake SNF. They have ISO dnlds on their site.

Where's a summary of the results for this? Wouldn't it have been nice so I don't have to click thru? Not that I'm lazy or anything :-)

Doh! The WWII bomber is actually a B-17G

What places do people in the US use to buy chips, etc. mail-order? JAMECO has a nice selection, but they seem to have quite high prices.

take some well-written GPLd code
make inconsequential tweaks to it
fire up the hype machine
burn cd, make pretty box
distribute and sell product
retire to villa in Antigua
;-)
