An easy solution to your problem is when you get the new machine or parts, just reactivate your copy of XP. Its amazing how you people can overlook the blindly obvious answer sometimes.
In that I don't actually have XP, this is a moot point for me. But I'll reply anyway.
When you do something like this, you have to convince the Microsoft support rep that you are indeed using a new computer and not simply trying to put it on another computer while keeping it on the old one. Having to do this is a huge PITA, and there is no way to actually prove that you have replaced your old computer and are not using XP on it.
That is probably true, as I don't have a copy of XP to play with, I have no idea, and I don't really care. It's still a Pain In The Arse to do it, even though it is allowed.
Well, I'll conceed that point. Since I use developer licenses of the product it's not really a concern to me. Then again, I don't see why it's an issue if you're using a legitimate copy of the OS. Most of the people I know that bitch about Product Activation are those that don't want to pay for their copy of XP...
What if I get WinXP for my computer, decide it [my computer] doesn't play Warcraft III very well, due to the fact that it's a Celeron 500 with 8mb graphics ram? When I go buy a new computer and put this one in the closet to be a file server running FreeBSD, I can't install my LEGAL copy of WinXP on my new computer.
And BTW, people who don't want to pay for XP don't have to. Just do a search on WinMX or KaZaa for WinXP, and you'll find a corporate version waiting to be installed.
Actually, my Linux box boots straight to X, skipping even the scrolling text of the Linux kernel, just like Windows.
So for both Windows and Linux, you have to go out of your way to get it to a text console. What the console looks like is irrelevant to assertain its ease of use.
Okay, I have to ask: What do you use for a pointer on that thing? And will you upload your Futureama mpgs to my private FTP Server that I'll put up tonight, just for you?
I still think I prefer my iBook. What's the speed on that thing?
My iBook (600/Combo/30gb) works quite nicely on my lap. It only gets hot playing Warcraft III. It's a nearly perfect computer, it even boots Linux off my firewire hard drive.
1) Nice Warcraft III reference. The mortar team is one of my favourite Human units.
2) MMM.. I remember wanting one of those machines back in the day. Indeed, it'd still prove useful if I could find programs with less bloat. DOS 6.22 + Word Perfect + some other stuff would be great on one of those.
Oh, no. The Canadian government is a business. They take our money ("Tax dollars") and spend it on services ("Health Care", etc), all while making a profit ("Budget surplus").
They have rights to the site because they own the Canadian trademark on the word "Canadian". I'm more pissed off at the Canadian trademark board then anyone else.
They have rights to the word "Canadian" as it pertains to beer..... nothing else.
According to the article: Varadarajan said Arcot may also support the Liberty Alliance Project, which seeks to establish a standard for online identification that's an alternative to Microsoft's Passport. Liberty Alliance was created by Microsoft rival Sun Microsystems.
So it looks like we may have something just as evil, but probably more secure and trustworthy. Hopefully Royal Bank will keep on using their system, and not go with either of these.
So presumably XP could be set up the same way - there's bound to be an IP address settable somewhere. Oh, silly me, it's MS - what was I thinking?;-)
What? What would be the point of MS not allowing people to set their time server? Microsoft must realise that not everybody has access to an external time server, and not everybody can use MS's time server. I myself use tick.usask.ca or tock.usask.ca with 2K, OSX, and OpenBSD. I forget which server name is correct.
Twice I have had a (rather large) UPS explode. When a UPS goes, it goes spectacularly. Really explodes. Smoke, fire, huge BANG. Talk about dangerous. We actually had one UPS disintegrate into pieces... luckly nobody was close at the time.
So do power supplies. I had a very nice 386DX which I bought long ago. I still have it, sort of. It started life as a 386DX/25 2mb ram/62mb hd. It then became a 486DX2/66/8mb/2.0gb in 1998. A few years before it became a 486, the fan in the power supply went. I thought nothing of it, but I got it to work again. I then upgraded it to a Celery 667/288mb/20gb.
The first time I tried to power it up, the power supply exploded. Literally exploded, there was a big bright blue flame coming from the supply, it was a little bigger than it should have been, and it left a large black mark on my wall, which is still there.
That day, I learned that a AT case was $45, and a AT power supply was $40. So I bought the case. Hence the "sort-of". Up till that point, every part in the computer (except the case/PS) had been replaced. Now all of it has.
hyperbole

A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect, as in I could sleep for a year or This book weighs a ton.
Unless all the games I want to play are not "games", then you are correct.
I routinely play Quake {1,2,3}, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Warcraft {1,2,3}, Starcraft, AOE, Bolo, etc..
I suspect that the Windows iPod's disk is formatted Fat32, while the Macintosh version is formatted HFS+.
(In any case, it's also my birthday. Unfortunately, I don't own a Mac - so I don't think I'll be looking for a copy of this OS as a gift this year.)
:)
Maybe you will get a copy of it... on you brand new TiBook.
Actually, 4-pin Firewire ports ARE a standard. There are two: 6-pin including power and 4-pin excluding power.

I've always wanted to go to the Australia with all my Roots Canada cloths.
I'd like to see the looks on people's faces when they see "Canada Roots" on my shirt.
If she's running Windows {3.1, 95, 98, ME} then show her a DOS window or put her into dos by hitting F8 when it starts up.
Then show her Linux. Let her decide which is easier.

We'll see if they get sued (again).
More appropriatly, molsonsucks.ca is available too.

However, Molson beer is Canadian(TM)

Guy, I just bought it last night (July 3) at future shop here in Saskatoon, SK. I got it and a MS sidewinder commander for $80 (Game promo).
Exactly how big should it have been?!?
Well not bulging from the front and back would have been a good start.
Now, the microwave and oven clocks, as well as my alarm clock, are dumb in this regard.
I think I just found the reason why people want bluetooth in everything!
I originally thought it was stupid to have bluetooth in things like microwaves, but I've seen the light.

A Floating Point Unit. (I had the LC475 an i did want a FPU - JSYK)
:)
Bah. If you didn't need it to play Dinopark, you didn't need it at all
Though, it would be nice to use NetBSD on an LC475 nowadays, it could be a nice dumb terminal or mail server. Can you get ethernet for them?
