Close, but not firewire. It's reasonable to assume that Apple will release a bigger iPod sometime soon, if so, then this is moot.

What it needs to be an iPod killer is Firewire. The iPod's 5gb is plenty for most people, I know I wouldn't need any more than that, as I only have about 1-2gb of MP3s.

Besides, do you want to copy 20gb worth of songs over USB?

Feeding was just a word I chose.

I do own an Apple. It's a late 2001 iBook, Combo drive, my first Mac. It's great, and for this kind of hardware/software combo I don't mind paying Apple. PCs are different though. I'm used to going to Techtronics (A very good computer wholesaler in Saskatoon) and buying the parts I need to build a PC.

I like knowing EXACTLY what's inside my computer when I buy it, it's difficult to determine this with notebooks. The sales guy will always say:

    It's got:
    Celeron 900
    30GB Hard Drive
    32mb graphics card
    256mb RAMPCI Sound card
    10/100 Ethernet
What IDE controller is on the MB?

But what brand of HD? What brand of graphics card? What kind of ram? Does the graphics/sound work with Linux or BSD? When I build it myself I know all this, not so with most notebooks.

The iBook is different, though. I know what's in it:

    A motorola G3 600
    Toshiba CDRW/DVD combo
    IBM TravelStar 30GN 20GB HD
    ATI Rage Mobility 8mb graphics

Not that I'd care, it runs MacOS X, that's what I care about. It's a great operating system, probably the best that Apple's produced.

Saskatoon (225K) and Regina (200K) have it all, Swift Current has cable and DSL, Moose Jaw has DSL. Prince Albert has DSL

Sasktel has a system for sending DSL signals over fibre connections, all of Saskatchewan is on Sasktel's fibre backbone. If the city has paid for it, Sasktel will install a DSL backbone off the fibre drop to the city.

  7. Re:Sorry, but what's the point? on Dave Barry Does Windows · · Score: 1

I've never had to recompile a Linux kernel to change its refresh rates. That's a userspace problem. In Windows, the GUI runs in kernel space, so it probably does do something along the lines of recompiling its kernel, just in the background. It is a microkernel, so it probably unloads that module, changes one of its values, then reloads it. Recompiling, without recompiling. But I am no expert on how Windows works to know if that's how it's done.

In the ease of use department, the Mac wins, hands down. Ease of use does not mean "Works like Windows" it means that the program is easy to use and to figure out.

Have you used MacOS X? It's great. It's easy to use and if you know what you're doing, you can do great things with it. It's stable (Not "Real UNIX" stable, but it's never crashed on me). It's got a BSDish kernel that you don't need to recompile, as well as an excellent GUI called Aqua.

Its only problem is that it is a little slow on my little G3. G4s work so much better for it.

Oh, MacOS X's core is open source.

Shaw is the local cable monopoly, and Sasktel is the local Crown telephone monopoly. They are not going anywhere anytime soon. Sasktel will exist as long as there is a Province of Saskatchewan, and Shaw will exist until some other cable monopoly from Ontario comes and buys them.
