Wha? I stuck PC RAM into my Apple LC 475, circa 1993. apple-history.com lists 30 pin SIMMs back to the Mac Plus, from 1986, and I'm pretty sure those are standard PC RAM sticks. You could argue that Macs pre-'86 were not expandable, but not that they used proprietary memory.

I got one of these a few months ago, and it's been a lot of fun. I leave it on my coffee table, and it's a conversation piece (I guess it helps to have stoner friends). My cats hate it a lot, they tend to wrinkle up their noses and run away.

I can't say that battery life has been a problem like he described, i've had the same set in since I got it. It doesn't push them with much force, but you can get better distance with practice. One thing i've found that helps the quality of the ring is to cover the smokehole with your hand while you pull the fog trigger, as if you don't, it will dribble smoke out. This produces thicker rings.

Just don't try and use it in a room with a fan on, it will blow it right away. One thing that was neat about that was discovering the airflow patterns in my house, and which windows are really drafty.

It's been more than $20 worth of fun, I think (just making your friends laugh like mine did is worth that) And no, I don't work for the company that makes or sells it, just an amused customer.

  8. Re:Now that we know about coverage on How's Your Cell Service? · · Score: 1

I use AIM constantly on my T-Mobile Sidekick (the phone showed on the website you referenced). I have the old plan, with 200 minutes, unlimited weekends, and unlimited internet for 40$ a month. I absolutely need unlimited internet (I usually use around 20MB a month), and they still offer unlimited internet with any Sidekick plan for 20$ extra with the new plans.

It feels very much like a 'real' client. It's very easy to use, compared to an SMS interface (ew). It's a client that's built into the Sidekick, as opposed to a web-based client. I love it. Speaking of web, it's the only phone I've found that will show images from the web.

As for their wireless web coverage, it's been just fine in major cities (Seattle, SF, Minneapolis, Hartford, and more), and even some not-so-major (Yakima, WA, Missoula, MT, Torrington, CT, and way more) that I've visited lately. It surprises me how much coverage it gets across the country (I'm currently on a cross-country drive, and it's been my godsend!). If you live along the Seattle-Hartford trail, and I'm going through your city, just ask and I'll tell you how it is there.

  9. Yes, you should. on AppleCare for PowerBooks - Worth it or Wasted? · · Score: 1

I have an original iBook, and didn't purchase APP with it, but after the first repair it needed (let my cousin play with it, CD drive mysteriously wouldn't stay shut after), decided it was worth it. 3 power adapters (the connector end fritzed on two of them, the cord that attaches to the saucer fritzed on one), 2 batteries, 2 motherboards (power plug [and adapters, see above] fritzes because it's placed right where it sits on my leg, pressing up on it), a modem, a keyboard, and...I think that's all. I'm incredibly hard on my laptops, and I shudder to think how much those repairs would have cost without. Now that my APP has expired, I'm trying to be more careful ;) The only thing that APP didn't cover: when my boyfriend stepped on it, breaking the LCD screen. I literally bought APP on the last day possible, with borrowed money, because I knew I would need it, and it was worth it.

You're right on two counts, we should demand to see the code, but say they did sneak some GPL code in, they (concievably) would have a date for that code mod, and (hopefully) we would be able to trace who and when it was submitted. Plus, by them using GPL'd code, wouldn't they have to release their source too? Mmmm, yummy.
