I'm still trying to think of even one industry that is capable of regulating itself without becoming another airline industry............Nope still haven't thought of one.
This will last until there is nothing left to patent. Then they will decide the RIAA had the right idea all along and everyone from Microsoft to Walmart will turn to suing their customers as their main revenue stream.
It should not surprise anyone that Yahoo cannot make anti spyware. Once the sales team gets their sticky little fingers on anything you can kiss functionality goodbye.
Exactly right. They are trying it out against the Iraqis to work out all the bugs so it can be used against us domestically. Same as what happened with the Remotely Piloted Recon Plane. They tested it against "terrorists" first, now it's being used to spy on us.
Kids today do not LOVE their music any more or less than we fogies LOVE our music.
Kids today have been force fed the whole "Downloading songs is evil" routine for years now, just like the rest of us. Some have bought into it but most have not. Many are still using P2P to get some of their music and some are waiting til the dust settles before they pick it back up.
Piracy is popular for many different reasons for many different people, but one of the more popular reasons is that CDs are overpriced and you do tend to get one or two goods songs and the rest are crap. That is a constant across demographics.
Noone is forcing you to read this liberal rag of a message board, so if the majority opinion here offends you to such a degree, I respectfully recommend a more conservative message board.
"We could easily end up with a total uneducated scum bag in office just because Al Bundy internet voted for him."
Too late. And it wasn't Al Bundy internet who voted him in, it was the Oil, Coal, and Media mafias who voted him in. Personally, I like my odds with Al Bundy internet a whole lot better.
One step forward and two steps back. All in the name of progress and innovation. Instead of using the technology we have now and improving upon that, we have to go back and use previous technologies to bypass roadblocks set up by the multimedia mafiosi. Oh well, hope this pans out.
Just when you thought people couldn't be any more maliciously greedy. It's becoming quite depressing reading Slashdot. I think I'll go hide in front of the TV and watch Gilligan's Island Marathons until all these "bad things" go away.
Probably because this country's history is filled with similar situations where large numbers of people had to break the law in order to change the law. When laws are initially created by corporate money in complete disregard for the rights of the people, those people are sometimes left with very few ways to make their voices heard. 60 million people breaking a law does not mean that 60 million people are criminals who should be thrown in jail. It means the laws that make these people criminals should be thrown out and rewritten.
Dont' buy their music and don't download their music. This is the point of no return for the music mafia. If they start going after the small time file swappers they will very quickly begin to alienate themselves from their customers as a whole. As soon as you get Joe Teenager and his mom on the evening news more than a few times a month because they are being sued for having 20 or 30 songs on their box, the real backlash will begin. The vast majority of people out there see file swappers as "those bad, bad other people" because that is the only way you see them portrayed by the mafia and the news. Now, with lawsuits apparently going after the small fish, they will finally begin enfuriating the mainstream public who of course see themselves as law-abiding and virtuous.
Amen to that, brother. I don't file share as much as I used to because the obscure stuff I listen to is pretty hard to find now. I do almost all my searching through the indie music sites, but I'm once again stuck in the position I was prior to file sharing: I buy a CD that has 1 or 2 songs I like and the rest suck. The only improvement is that now my money is going to the independants or directly to the artist instead of to the music mafia. I still consider this a step in the right direction. I hope the music mafia implodes in a cloud of litigation and every last one of those genetic freaks lose the will to live and put themselves out of our misery.
I'm trying to think of any topic that could possibly be more divisive to Slashdot or to the country as a whole. Abortion, Gay Rights, the Iraq War, Reagan...yup, it sure the hell is right up there. Reading the absolute hatred between the opposing sides (and I'm also in there with fangs bared) is quite frightening. This conversation, if conducted in person, could easily end up with people dead or gravely injured.
Yup. If pioneering space is left to the millionaires, we will never colonize the moon or Mars. There will be plenty of millionaires in space, but nothing permanent or worthwhile will get done. First, because it will take a hundred billion plus to set up shop on Mars and second, it will take twenty or more years for any profit to be made. If millionaires (or billionaires) go out there pioneering, it will probably be on our dime using government grants, incentives, and tax breaks. These Space Cadets will be more than willing to use a hundred billion of our money to get the ball rolling so they can rake it in later with little or no out of pocket for them. I'd rather have the money go to NASA. I respect and trust scientists (even the bureaucrats) much more than I could ever trust a CEO or Chairperson.
Be realistic. Your life savings against millions just waiting to be spent by the Music Mafia. One way you end up $12,000 down, and the other way you end up $100,000 or more in the hole as you pay out the ass for your legal representation, who you hope doesn't wet themselves the first time they face the Mafia.
The EU is not the Soviet Union and in all probability will not become like the Soviet Union. We do not have a reference to go by when it comes to how good or bad off the world will be with two superpowers again. All I know is that the US does not seem to be handling the job alone very well.
The EU is not just Germany, nor Italy. The Europe of today is not the Europe of the previous century. There should not be a single superpower. Questioning my patriotism because I disagree with you is about as Unamerican as it gets.
That depends on what your definition of "is" is. And yes "we" make the decisions, either directly or indirectly. "We" make the decisions directly by being active in our government and making sure our representatives know without a doubt that we are either happy or unhappy with them. "We" also make the decisions indirectly by not doing anything.
The US has a monopoly on Global Positioning, this is tremendous power over other countries. If the EU creates their own system and allows other countries to use it, that destroys the monopoly and decreases the power and control that the US may wield over others. And that is a good thing.
That would have a ring of truth to it except for the fact that the Soviet Union is no longer and the EU cannot be in any way construed as the old Russian bear. In fact we are closer to what the Soviet Union used to be than the EU could conceivably ever be. And yes I do remember, I was in Berlin in the 80's.
Right now we (the US) are bad for world peace. Anything that will help level the world playing field is good for world stability and peace. The EU just needs to get their ducks in a row so they can truly be a world superpower.

Excellent! Now they just need to bring back the Invisible Man and I will be happy.

Spin doctor are we? Quite a jump from making a statement against laws purchased by corporate dollars and ethnic cleansing.

They are just creating a splash, trying to stay in the headlines. As soon as the media gets bored their stock will drop like a rock.

I LOVE THE INTERNET!!!!

Agreed. This is the first small step in the right direction. I hope this works for them.
