For me, this is a killer system. It's not weak, and I know what I mean by a killer system.
Yes, this is a killer system.
It's not a quad processor 4 GIGA-PLEX-ZOWIE-BAM with optional tinted windows and a 1GIG 32x AGP-ultra mega 6D graphics card...but show me a $825 system that is.
Being $825 and having the features that it does in itself makes it a "killer system". SO STFU.
For 700 bucks I get a DVD burner, 80 Gig HD and the best OS on the planet.
I would never buy the RAM upgrades form Apple, nor would I do the same from any maker. I buy my RAM from the cheapest source possible, which usually ISN'T the maker. So what are we talking about here, another $125 for a full Gig of RAM now.
$825 for a killer system. That's only 125 to "bring the Mac Mini up to a reasonable configuration".
Now, you may think me a Mac zealot, but in fact, I build and maintain computers from scratch running Linux. I haven't owned an Apple product in about 8 years. I've used them quite a bit in my old job, but they were always "overpriced" for me. That's really no longer an excuse.
I have to agree...how is this news for Slashdot really?
How is this different from an ex-girlfriend abusing your stuff after a bad breakup:
* Throwing your laptop out a window * Spraypainting your monitor * Keying/spraypainting/breaking windows on your car * Dumping bleach into your salt water aquarium * Boiling your daughters pet rabbit on the stove * Coming at you with a butcher knife
I mean, we've all been there, this is normal stuff really. Nothing to see here...
No they just use technobabble to create the plot. In the miniseries, after we were beaten over the head constantly by "Telecomute Cylon Hottie" with how she was remotely in his head, when they go into the nebula thing that kills cylons the magic technobabble long distance comms still work, no matter what distance and no delays or interfearnace?
If this show is so "hard" on the science part of science fiction why do we get all kinds of crap technobabble like that, and how the cylons are "genetically" and other crud.
Not to defend this show or anything, but your point is lost. We still don't know if that Cylon Hottie is really in his head or if he's just imagining her. The jury is still our on that one. My guess is he's very delusional. If so, then there wouldn't really be a link to anywhere through anything. Anything else that you don't like? Granted, if you don't like the show, you don't like it. No biggie. I give it only a season...MAYBE two to stay fresh. Then like most shows they always taper off and run out of ideas and the producers get lazy and start looking to other things...so the show suffers. It happens all the time.
Also, never read anywhere or saw where this was going to be "hard" on the science part. I never take science fiction seriously in terms of true science as EVERY movie with the exception of 2001 has sound in space. So right there, "hard" science is kinda thrown out the window.
But no, haven't really seen any technobabble on this show yet. It's all character driven. They don't use the "we must reverse the warp engines in parallel with the holodeck to split beam the positronic flow of babble to the babble at the same time we babble the babble...and we only have one shot at this or we're all dead/assimilated/sent back in time/sent forward in time/sent to a parallel universe/fucked".
Hmmm...right to bear arms. Ok, sure...knives are also protected under the 2nd amendment? How many Constitution Law classes have you had?
So "arms" could be anything. I mean, I could swing a computer monitor around attached to a chain if I wanted. Deadly weapon. Armed and dangerous! So ANYTHING that is considered an "arm" is protected by our constitution? Really?
So you see, it's not as simple as you think it is. There is a huge gray area here. But really, how ignorant you are of our country is just as staggering.
Ok, not guns...protected by the constitution and all that (it's interesting that the same people that talk about how guns are our rights and is protected by the constitution are usually the same ones that want to "clean up TV and Radio"...yet that same constitution mentions free speech. In fact, it comes before "right to keep and bear arms". Just an observation...no, I don't want to take away your guns or your speech...but I digress)
Getting back to my point...what about knife manufactures? Shouldn't they be held liable if the thing they make is used in a crime? Baseball bat manufactures? What about that crow-bar?
I mean, if this law is worded so open like that, it's true..ANYTHING could fall under it. FTP software, Web browsers etc etc. Why are they wasting their time with this crap when it WILL get overturned by the courts.
Yeah, I did notice that Mac...and in fact, if this was from a Tiger Beat from 1983, then they had a picture of the Mac before it was even released in 1984!
Though I doubt there were industry people scouring Tiger Beat to see what Apple was up to.
err.... i believe that the person you are refering to in this particular thread is actually on your side. I could be wrong, but gp is stating that you DO get a lot of (crap) software with a Dell, above and beyond the obligitory spyware you will get with a windows setup.
Oh, thought he was talking about the Apple. And I was being honest, as I don't use Apple or own one so I wanted to know what spyware etc etc.
I guess it came across as me being a smart-ass...which I usually am. But I honestly wanted to know. As for a PC having all that stuff, then yeah, I know most come with stuff pre-installed to "just help ya out"...lol
How is the Mini "insanely overpriced" compared to the computer you mentioned?
CPU - OK, the "headless Dell" is faster. RAM - Both same amount of RAM HD - Both 40 gigs Warranty - the Dell is a year better..and is on-site. BOTH COST $499
So, where is the "insanely overpriced" come in? If it were $699 then perhaps you would have a valid argument. But of course, you do not.
Not to mention the fact you get a TON of software with the Mini and OSX. How much software comes with the Dell? Yeah, thought so...
And here I'm not even using a Mac nor own a Mac and even I can see you're so full of shit it's not even funny. If you have a beef against Apple, then please, think a little harder next time to come up with something of substance.
Well, I kinda doubt it was "coming from the Army". You have to remember, the people that design and program the game are NOT Army personel. They WORK for the Army, but they don't represent "the Army" anymore than the civilian that works at the base commisary.
But anyway, you KNOW what the hacks are. The aimbots and the wall hacks...don't throw out those "buying a better mouse" statements. I mean, come on..
"Really now, do you want military-sized, wasteful, beurocratic budgets to spend time tracking down people who cheat in a video game?"
Sure, why not. Better this than...oh, I don't know...invade a country that was zero threat to us? OH that's right, NOW we're changing history to say we went in to "help the Iraqi people"...instead of the real reason (yes, I have a memory), which is because Saddam was messing around with the weapons inspectors and being a jerk...which of course gave us the "in" we were looking for to invade! But this is off-topic of course....
Let's see, tracking down cheaters...let's call it a cool million dollars to do this(and don't be naive, the entire Army is NOT going to go after cheaters). Iraq? Well, we bought that country didn't we...100 Billion? My vote goes with tracking down the cheaters. lol. But hey, guess I'm not "paying enough taxes" aye?
I don't play AA anymore, as there just isn't enough time in my day...but I really hope they fly at all these little idiots with the full weight of the US Army and everything that entails. Yeah, I know, no tank will be bashing in their doors, but the dreaded and feared lawyers will be out there with writs in hand!
It always cracks me up with the d00dZ saying "yeah, they can't do anything to me, I'm not breaking no law or anything...they can't catch me anyway...I'm l33t!". Now it's time to finally shut them up...if even for 5 minutes!

I also belive that everyone would be required to wear helmets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week...without exception!
I can't understand why the government doesn't enforce this...as thousands and thousands of lives each year could be saved and countless injuries could be avoided.
How many people slip in the bath-tub and die each year from head trauma? How many people slip on the ice on a street and die? Dr. Atkins of the Atkins Diet died in this way...he simply slipped on the ice and hit his head. If the mandatory helmet was in place, he would probably be alive today!
Exactly...I was simply pointing out that if they're silly enough to ban these lasers because of something that has only a potential to be harmful. I wasn't trying to say "ban guns". Not in the least.
Was only saying...so, they ban lasers. Yet anyone with a gun could do much more damage if they really wanted to. I mean, if someone REALLY wanted to bring down a plane with a rifle, they could. Then what will we do? Nothing of course. And you're right, you'd have to muster enough support to overturn the 2nd Amendment. Would someone bringing down an airliner with a gun bought at Walmart do that? Who knows. Personally, I don't have a issue with owning guns...OR lasers for that matter. I just have issues with people wanting to ban things..yet keep other things. Hypocrites and such.
Stop trying to ban everything under the sun because it "might" be used as a weapon. What's next? Banning pens on airplanes? I mean, let's think about it...you could kill someone with a pen if you REALLY wanted that person dead. BAN THE PENS! HOw about those forks used in the meals on airliners...I'm sure you could jam that into someones neck and hit a major artery. BAN THE PLASTIC FORKS!
SO you see, I was trying (and I guess failing) to point out how silly banning these lasers would be.
Welcome to America. The place where they ban TOY guns, yet keep the real thing. lol.
Not making any judgements and it's one of our rights to keep and bear arms and I certainly uphold the constitution as it's written...just so long as they're real guns and not toy ones!
I never said they should outlaw guns. I was pointing out that if they were to outlaw a simple laser, yet keep something that's basically MADE to kill other things is kind of silly.
This is true...but still, if they're nitpicking over a laser pointer possibly bringing down an airliner?
Also, if you can shine a laser into a cockpit...couldn't you also fire a round into the same cockpit? Ok, rupturing a fuel tank isn't going to do that much damage, but a few rounds flying through the cockpit...of an airliner on approach...with pilot and co-pilot busy with the landing and not thinking "hey, we're in a combat zone, watch for ground fire" like the bombers in WWII were. I mean, that's scary stuff!
But I doubt you'll ever see someone saying we should outlaw any guns. At least not a politician that wants to be re-elected.
Very easy...using a green laser pointer, where you can actually see the beam, it's very easy to point out stars and planets etc etc. It's used as a pointing device out of doors.
They work quite well too so there's no "it's that star...no no, that one next to the bright on there...no, down further....see it?" With the pointer you just follow the beam upwards. A green lasers beam is quite visible.
OK, I can see giving him more time. He was trying to do something that could have had a very dangerous outcome if he succeeded.
But they're talking now about outlawing lasers to the general public?!?! Huh? Because they can be used for this?
OK, outlaw them. They have the slight chance of maybe blinding one of the pilots on approach. (again, another Tom Clancy scenario in a book about using an ultra bright light to bring down an approaching airliner...just like in the same book a 747 pilot crashed his plane into the Capital building in Washington...but I digress......)
But if they could do this, why not outlaw all guns and rifles in the US! I mean, couldn't THESE be used on approaching and departing airliners? A 460 Weatherby Magnum rifle could do some serious damage...maybe bust open a fuel tank if aimed with any degree of accuracy. I mean, if you're going to outlaw a 10 dollar laser pointer, shouldn't a high-powered rifle be in the same boat?
But no no...can't do that can we! We have the NRA...there is no National Laser Association lobby group in Washington looking out for our right to keep and bear lasers!

I don't know, BSG is character driven rather than just another "special effects" series.
Also, it doesn't devolve into techno-babble to solve everything like any Trek does.
I don't watch Sci-Fi for special effects...and don't see them being "avoided" at all with this series.
Yeah, I did notice that Mac...and in fact, if this was from a Tiger Beat from 1983, then they had a picture of the Mac before it was even released in 1984!

Unfortunately you get wayyyy too much, and what you get sucks to use, even if you exclude the spyware...
Care to expand on this? What spyware specifically? List examples please.
Also, you say that it sucks to use, please again, give examples on what sucks to use and your reviews of using them.
Thanks

No, nothing like that. They cheat, they'll get hassled. Will they go to jail? Nah, but they'll get hassled.
It's pretty plain to me...if you want to cheat, don't play AA. Go cheat on Counterstrike like everyone else does you little wienies....
I don't play AA anymore, as there just isn't enough time in my day...but I really hope they fly at all these little idiots with the full weight of the US Army and everything that entails. Well, it's good to see something besides the fantasy/sci-fi based MMO that are everywhere.
I'm still waiting for a Wild-West MMO. With homesteaders, and bandits, and deputies, and train robbing and shoot-outs at the Okie-Dokey coral!
