  1. Wired.com writeup on Judge Rules NSA Wiretapping Unconstitutional · · Score: 2, Informative
Slightly more details at http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,71610-0.html. ..

The wiretapping "violates the Separation of Powers doctrine, the Administrative Procedures Act, the First and Fourth Amendments to the United States Constitution, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and Title III (of the Constitution)," according to Taylor's injunction.

    (g) (paraphrased from an older comment of mine...) In the three major American sports (basketball, baseball, and football), it’s possible to go from being behind (in the score) to being ahead in one single play (home run with men on base, field-goal or touchdown, or even a simple 2-point basket). That kind of emotional swing, from losing to winning or winning to losing, is unavailable in soccer and hockey (though hockey has fighting to keep me entertained).

If soccer could conceive of some way to earn two points on a single goal (a larger box outside the current penalty box?) to earn that emotional swing, perhaps there would be more interest.

  3. Of course! on Don't Blame The Games, Blame The Parent · · Score: 1

I am the father of an 11 year old. He doesn't play his Playstation 2 on weekdays, and even when he does play, it's only sports games (football is our favorite). No TV until the weekends, and definitely no TV in his room.

How do kids have all this free time? He's either at practice (soccer, baseball, basketball - whatever is in season) or outside in our backyard playing with the neighborhood kids (or me).

These parents who complain about TV or videogames just seem a little lazy to me...

And how much time do *you* spend in front of your computer?

They'll notice that you're allowed to play on the computer more than they are, and for longer stints, and they're going to get resentful.

    Don't say I didn't warn you.
Huh? Is this how you act as a parent? This is modded insightful?

As a parent, I spend more time on the computer than my kid. I can also drink a beer at dinner, stay up later, watch more TV, and drive. You know what I say to my kid when he complains that I do things he can't? I tell him that (DUH!!!) "There are different rules for kids then there are adults." And I don't just say it - I've been explaining that rule since he could walk and talk. I explain the *reason* for the rule (safety, kid's best interest, etc.) If there's not a good reason for the rule, then there should be no rule.

Per your comment - of *course* they may resent the fact that you (as an adult and parent) get to do things they can't. But as a parent, you'll get much less resentment if you explain why.

  8. Soccer less popular because... on Replacing Sports Referees With Technology? · · Score: 2, Interesting

My theory as to why soccer hasn’t acheived higher popularity in the US:

In the three major American sports (basketball, baseball, and football), it’s possible to go from being behind (in the score) to being ahead in one single play: think Pujols the other night, Adam Vinatieri frequently, or Kobe burying a three.

I’ve only starting watching soccer because my son plays on two teams - we watch games together. And high-quality play from international teams are most definitely enjoyable. But if the team you’re rooting for is down by two goals with 90 seconds left, the game is over.

  9. Does it have Google-like labels? on Yahoo To Update Mail Service · · Score: 5, Interesting

I use Yahoo for nearly everything (all family events in Calendar, saved Maps for soccer fields and restaurants, Weather, and Contacts/ToDo), but I switched to Gmail for email as soon as I could.

I am so reliant on Labels - it just makes so much sense that any email can really be in more than one folder. (In fact, since being forced to use Outlook 2003 at work, I've forgone folders and used it’s Category feature which work remarkable similar to Gmail Labels to organize my work email - I can use Outlook's search to organize/search by Category).

If Yahoo Mail were to offer anything like Labels, I’d switch back.

When Google Maps gets this feature and allows me to save locations linked to my gmail account, I'll switch over. The new interface in Google Maps is cool, but Yahoo maps (and Mapquest, I suspect) is good enough - especially for simply printout out map and driving directions.

In fairness to Miss Siddiq, she has gone to extreme lengths to provide the Patent Office with as much information as she can find in connection with her application.
